NYC Compost Project is an organization that helps the environment by provides compost education and outreach through host sites in all five boroughs. The have several educational program such as: compost-related workshops and classes, on-site composting demonstrations, compost helpline, and composting technical assistance. Three interesting lessons NYC Compost Project was teaching at the Green Day Festival @ Grand Central were about indoor composting, outdoor composting, and worm facts. Indoor composting involves using red worm in a worm-bin composting system to recycle food scraps. “One red worm processes half its own weight in food scraps every day!” Out door composting involves placing a large worm bin outdoors so like inside, the worms composes the trash. Moreover, some worm facts are that, they don’t have eyes, don’t have teeth, can live indoor and outdoor, they are hermaphrodites, and have five heart-like orgasms. NYC Composting Projects have their own website were one can email them a plan a visit to a class and teach students about composting.
The ZipCar Company is an environmental friendly car business that provides the car market with more hybrid cars. Every Zipcar helps take 15-20 personally-owned cars off the road. Zipcars are cars that are rent and used when they are need by drivers. Moreover, Zipcar come in all models and sizes. Zipcars help the environment because less emission is polluting the air. One can join the Zipcar movement by rents Zipcars instead of owning their on gas vehicle.
When I arrived at the festival I thought “wow there are a lot of people and companies.” I also notice that there where many business trying to get customers though the event, although their company was not a green friendly business. Something I learn while at the festival was that there was a lot of ways to help the environment from composting to reclining non-composting things to creating friendly business and homes. The business that seemed the most green friendly to me was Ethink us because they helped people find business that are green friendly as well so that their customers only use green friendly products to help the environment. The greenest friendly organization to me was NYC Composting Project because they are a non-profit organization that teaches people to be greener in the five brought of NYC. Lastly, thanks to what I learned in the festival I am going to create an indoor composting in my dorm when at college and plant a sunflower seed that was given to me by the Zipcar business. In addition, I will rent a Zipcar when traveling to my college, instead of using a vehicle that’s bad for the air. Moreover, I also wanted to invite the NYC Composting Project to my school to teach us more about composting.
The first organization that I was interested in was the Indoor/ Outdoor composting with a worm bin. The worms initially are out into the compost pile by feeding them organic material and helping them to transform it into compost. Red wiggler also known as the tiger worm is the most essential macro organisms decomposers both indoor and outdoor. The red wiggler feed on the macro organism and the decaying matter. This is helping our environment because these worms help clean the soil which makes the plant grow more. We can involve with this organization by creating a compost pile as well to get rid of all the macro organism so that plants are able to grow in a better environment. The second organization was the zip car; every Zipcar takes at least 20 personally-owned vehicles off the road, which means that there are less spending on oil and gas.
My initial impressions was that it was going to be dull because I saw a speaker talking to an audience but once I got outside to the actual festival it was interesting. I learned about the composed, and the zip car. I think the most interesting one and the most environmentally friendly organization was the composting worm bin because it was the most natural. One action I can take is plant my own flower which the zip car company provided me with, and take care of the sunflower.
during the earth day festival i visited the bio bus where they now have a new green roof which is bigger and traps more sun which eventually create more energy. Also in the bio bus they have a new microscope which are more efficient since you could closer to see a specie.
ALso during earth day festival i saw a water fountain that converted durty water into clean water and different people where tasting the water to see how it tasted since the water came from a dirty water hole.
Walking around the Earth day festival I could not help but notice that people were presenting different issues that lead to pollution. For example, many were signing petitions to influence Andrew Cuomo to prevent hydrofracking from occurring in New York State. The person presenting the display gave me her email and a paper indicating an event that a few members a going to create to influence people to go against fracking.
I learned that air conditioners and electricity could be powered by solar energy, similar to the bio bus and its green roof. A presentation that caught my attention was based on a printer that created 3D dimensional figures by using recycled plastic. For example, the inventions that were in display were a guitar, skull, car, and different shapes. However, it is a very expensive innovation.

The earth day was very interesting, it was a day to celebrate and also a day to learn how keep our environment in better condition. When I went to indoor to outdoor I once again saw the bio where they now have a new green roof. The main purpose of the green roof was to trap more sun and maintain more energy. I also saw new people that were part of the Bio bus that I did seen before, and from what I remember, the last time I saw Ben and Sarah. Last time we were able to go in into the Bio and learn about an organism called Daphnia, unfortunately, we were not able to go into the Bio Bus again to see the new stuff that was added.
One of the most interesting thing I learned at the earth day festival was about indoor and outdoor composting with a worm bin. These worm bin can help the environment to stay greener because it can help eliminate organism that then can help the plants to grow. This is important because plants and trees are valuable to our society. That is the reason why it is harmful to the environment when trees are cut off and a lot of papers are getting recycled. In addition,I learn about the zip car organization which is an organization that provides hybrid cars that use less oil and gas. From what I remember, I know that the more people drive , the more damage we causing to our atmosphere.
This is related to me learning about composting shows that I can use composting in order to composed trash in order to keep my environment less polluted. I know that pollution is usually cause by human activity and more pollution harms our drinking water, the species that lives in the river, and more importantly our environment.
