Over the past 6 weeks we have been raising trout in the classroom.

  1. The first time I have seen the trout was back when they were still in their eggs colored in orange red. Back then I didn't think much of them and still don't until I actually see them develop into edible fish (adulthood). Once they hatched they became into little tadpoles (which is what I call all baby fish that look like tadpoles). I've seen them go from within their cage (the net) to the rest of the aquarium. Since their time in the net they have not grown much and are still little fledglings, though they have developed less transparent skin. In class I've learned that trout are considered and indicator species which means you can tell how "healthy" a stream is by the trout's population. Trout are also freshwater fish but actually they live in the sea after they are born in freshwater only to return again to spawn (give birth). Having trouts in the classroom comes with several benefits. One benefits is that we get to learn about and see the life cycle of a fish, which isn't something many people do. Another benefit is that we get to learn how to raise fish from scratch the right way which is the scientific way.

  2. “Why would he want to raise Trout?” was the first thing that came to my mind when I heard Mr. Fox announce the trout’s homecoming. When I saw the trout in their aquarium for the very first time I felt like I was being tricked because I had looked up a picture of what a trout looked like and when I saw them in their marble looking eggs, I knew their growth was going to take a LONG time. Also, I learned that trout have body parts that are very similar to the human and have certain features that humans do not have. I know that trout have something in their stomach that make them digest something that humans can’t. There are many benefits to having trout in the classroom. One benefit is that I get to witness the life cycle happen in front of me every day. This is beneficial because I can see how something can grow and change with no influence from the outside world. This is also beneficial because I can witness time’s impact on something. Another benefit I gain by having these trout in my learning environment is that I get to study what I have full access to. This is beneficial because I can read an article about trout and if I don’t believe it, I can easily walk up to the aquarium and look for myself. I never thought I would have a class pet in high school.

  3. Environmental Science has been the first class ever where I have actually had a class pet. I always see (in movies) classrooms that contain pets; either a hamster or some fishes. The thought of our class having a pet really made me happy. Bonus points at the fact that our pet is actually Trout fish. I say that because although we have a class pet for fun, we also have a class pet that we are learning about.
    This year, my class has learned about Trout fish. I know that trout fish are indicator species. This makes them important because they are sensitive to changes in bodies of water. So, if Trout fish are placed in a body of water and one day are nowhere to be found, chances are that there’s been a change in the water that causes them to leave. There’s more that we have learned about the fish, but that information comes from facts our science teacher gives us or facts we research. We just so happen to have the upper hand. Not only are we learning about Trout fish by hearing about it or researching it, but we are learning about these fish through OBSERVATION.
    Having the Trout fish in our class room helps each and every one of us become masters at observing. Every time we walk into the room, we see the fish. Over weeks, we see them grown. Over months, well, we can see changes from when they were first born to how they have developed. This hands-on learning experience is the best kind of learning anyone can do. It incorporates fun with learning which makes students want to be more involved. That is the change that I’m seeing in my class mates and even in myself. I’m excited to see what will happen once we release the Trout fish!

  4. Getting the trout in our classroom is probably one of my favorite things that we have done so far in Environmental Science. When we first got the trout, they were tiny, little, red eggs like the baby fish eggs from Finding Nemo. But they soon hatched and turned into little tadpole-looking animals. In that state, the trout were covered in the sack they were born in, so that's what they fed on for a while until they ate all of it and were finally able to have normal fish food. Now, our trout look like mini fishes. I don't know if they will grow bigger or not, but I'm pretty sure they will. The coolest fish we have is the two-headed fish, because I have never seen that before in my life. I hope that fish doesn't die.

    This year I've learned a lot about trout. For example, I've learned that trout are fresh water fish. They're an indicator species, which basically means they can tell us a lot about the water they are in. If there are a lot of trout in an area, that is an indicator that the water is fresh and healthy. If the amount of trout in an area is very low, we can tell that the water is not in a very good condition for the fish and probably not in good condition to drink.

    Having the trout in our classroom is a really great thing that not many students get to do, so I'm pretty thankful that we get to have some. This is something we can really take to our advantage because it's a great chance for the students to work hands-on with real live fish. It's always so much easier to learn about something when it's hands-on because it's more entertaining, which is good because personally I learn faster when I can enjoy what I'm doing. Another benefit of having the trout is that we learn responsibility because taking care of an animal takes a lot of carefulness and responsibility. These are just a few characteristics that can help us become better students as we learn to take how to take care of them, when to feed them, etc.

  5. Having trout on the class has been a wonderful experience. Besides the fact that we could learn a lot from them I always loved all types of animals. Trout is not common specie you fine in every class room so I personally feel lucky to have some being raised in my classroom. Every time I walk in to class or I pass thru to go to the bathroom I always take a small peek at the trout. I notice that slowly they have been growing. When we first got them they were inside this smaller tent inside the tank. Now that they grew I a little they all swim around the whole tank. So far this year I learned that trout is indicator specie. An indicator species is any biological species that defines a trait or characteristic of the environment. Also that trout live in estuaries. An estuary is a body of water that’s a mix of salty and sweet water. Having this trout in the class room provide a lot of benefits to us as students because we get to see them grow and make observations. Having the trout in the classroom is an experience I’m never going to forget. Also in some type of way it also made the lesson more interesting.

Having the trouts in are class i have seen them change over time very quickly because there in class we already knew what day they were suppose to hatch and keep there water tempricher the right amount for they can survive. This year i learned about trout is that trouts can live in salt or fresh water and all trouts are are born in rivers because adult trout come from the ocean to the river to spawn there eggs in the summer and leave back to the river in th winter and when the baby trouts a born and grown they go to the ocean and do the samething as the other trouts. The benefits the trouts have it that it has a better chance to live and and a healthy and safe environment to live in. Why dont trouts stay living in the river in stead of going back to the ocean?

  7. From the beginning of first receiving trout till now I’ve seen the trout go threw a big change weekly. First the trout were eggs and inside a net were they couldn’t be out in the tank. Then they came out of their eggs and were able to swim inside the net but still not outside in the tank. Now this week I noticed that the trout were out in the tank instead of being inside the net which I felt kind of exciting about because it seemed to me as if their growing fast and that soon there going to get even bigger then they already are because they seem to develop really fast. I’ve learn this year about trout that there are indicated species and that they are found in water. Meaning that the water around that area that the trout are in is clean and not polluted. Which is a good benefit to the community and other animal species because they don’t have to worry about the water the use being polluted or the area. Having trout in the classroom is like a responsibility because you always have to be taking care of them and making sure they are fine its like taking care of a human being. It also a good thing to take care of the trout because we as students get to watch how a living thing can develop and all though we are humans we can compare in a developing way because we also grow fast. What other species or organisms can the trout live among? And would we be able to bring them into the tank?

  8. The trout overtime have grown a lot even though they are still in the midst of their growth. During class i learned many different and interesting things about trout. I learned they are considered an indicator species which means that when the trout population progressives the water quality is good. I learned a couple more interesting facts when Martin Marosy came to speak to our classroom. I learned that male colors are bright in order to attract female trout. In general female trout are not as bright as male trout. Also male trout tend to grow a kype which is a hook in the lower jaw,it will also have a elongated body. The benefit of having a trout in class is that we are able to see first-hand how a trout grows in a clean and safe habitat. I want to know how long are our trouts going to be when we let them go? What's the ratio of male to female? And what's average length of a trout?

How I seeing the trouts change by over time is that at first the trouts came as an egg all together in a little net, then as time past they started growing and moving and we observed the trouts when they were growing. I observed and noticed that trouts are indicated species and you could only find them in water that is clean and not polluted. Also I learned that trouts could be find in salt and fresh water is something I found really interesting I thought they will only be find in fresh water. Now we see that they trouts are growing since now they all are swimming in the tank seem like they growing up good. This has benefit us because we get to see how trouts grow up and what they have to go threw. Also it benefits us because we get to learn how to raise fish which something that I know a lot of people haven't done. Final way is because we could observed and learn a lot from seeing how fish have change from when they first arrived till now.

  10. Over time i have seen the trouts grow big and bigger. It looks like it takes a long time for them to really grow. But they seem to move around more and fatser. This year I have learned alot about trouts for example we went on the Bio Bus and saw them in a microscope. And we also learned about their yorks and where is their heart. The benefits are that we get to see trouts grow and see how they develop and we would learn something new about trouts.

  11. The journey we’ve been through with the trout has been an amazing one. From Mr.Fox going to get the eggs all up to seeing them swim around freely, to even seeing one with 2 heads. Its amazing how an orange small dot , with the right care and shelter can grow into a large trout. I learned some interesting facts about trout. I learned that a male trout will usually develop a hooked snout. Also a female trouts mouth may be rounder and have dull colors. Another fact about trout I learned was that trouts are considered an indicator species, meaning that you can tell or “indicate” the characteristics of a body of water if there are trout living in it. I think that there is a benefit to having trout in class. You get to look forward to something every day so I think it makes you also want to do better in the class. You are also more enthusiastic about learning the material if it connects to the trout. I would still want to know where we will put the trout when they grow and how big they would e when they reach adulthood.

Watching the trout grow in the classroom give me a sense that everything takes time and there is a process for everything.This also makes me believe that there’s a certain responsibility that needs to be taken in order for things to get done making me reflect as a student on how I need to start taking the initiative to do the work in order for it to get done. The trout growing makes me think about how this process may take a while and how exciting it may be to watch them swim freely.There is a benefit in having trouts in class because it helps us really notice and wonder about the environment in our planet how every river is getting polluted and some of us aren't doing anything to help fix this situation because some of us don't even recycle. In my believe the trout are safer in our classroom than in their natural environment.

  13. I personally love having trout in our classroom. In a way I feel like it’s our classroom pet where we’ve watched the trout from their eggs to swimming on their own all around the tank. When the trout first hatched, they were so tiny. I was glad we got to see them on the microscope when the BioBus came to visit our school. So far, I’ve learned that trout are indicator species where they indicate the water’s temperature. Also, baby trout are called Alevins and they feed themselves from their own yolk from the sac.
    As a student I believe that having trout in our classroom will provide me with knowledge on animals that live in freshwater. Trout wasn’t only a focus on one lesson, but it was a way to focus on one topic throughout the whole year by watching the trout progress through their growth. Furthermore, having the trout physically in our classroom helps us understand the development of trout more and visually learn the background on trout. Something I want to know about trout is what are we going to do with the trout at the end of the school year?

  14. We have had trout in our classroom for six weeks now and I have to say, it doesn't feel like so long has passed. Yet when you look at a picture from when we started off with them still being eggs, and you look at them now swimming in the whole tank. There’s a huge difference if you ask me. When we first got them they were tiny looking things in a little net inside the tank. When they started hatching they were still pretty small, and they didn’t even move, so I wasn’t really intrigued with them. I would say I was more interested with the trout’s when they started swimming up, because it meant more responsibilities for my classmates and me to take care of them. It also meant that they were sooner or later going to be able to swim in the tank it’s self. It was pretty funny because once they moved into the whole tank they started getting longer. I swear they grow some more everyday, which is pretty cool to see every morning when I walk into class. I have also learned that to raise trout it is very important to have everything perfect for them, the amount of bubbles in the water, the temperature, the pH levels, salinity, and the amount of light. Taking care of trout is a very tricky job especially when they are ready to be given food; you have to be so persisted. I would say that my favorite part of having the trout’s in the classroom is that I get to check up on the two headed trout that I call “monster” and the trout that has a bent tail, those are my two favorite trout’s in the tank. I also love the trout that felt the need to be the only one who left the little net and moved on to the tank, without the rest of the trout. I would say that that having those trout in the class makes class more fun for me because I get excited when I know I’m going to class, and it makes me happy to know we are helping the trout grow up healthy. A question I still have about trout is: Can a two headed trout live?, and do they have food that maybe stinks less?

  15. Six weeks ago we received egg trouts in our classroom. Throughout these six weeks, these trouts have evolved. They went from egg trouts to hatching to being baby trouts. I believe these trouts have evolved rapidly. Before receiving trouts in our classroom, we first learned various things about them. We learned things such as trouts being an indicator specie. They indicate to us how the water is, if it's clean/fresh. They are an important food source to other wildlife animals. In addition, their habitat is fresh, cool temperature, clean rivers/streams/lakes and they like the shade. You can distinguish the difference of a male trout and a female trout because male trouts have brighter colors. The benefits of having these trouts in our classroom are that they are able to indicate to us if the water in our school is clean/fresh and/or healthy. Also although it's fun having trouts as our classroom pet, we can learn more about them as they grow bigger and they are common to NYC water ways. Overall, our classroom trouts have evolved drastically in these 6 weeks. As they grow, I would like to witness how big our biggest trout is going to be and if they are going to get to spawn.

  16. Well throughout the year we have been learning more and more about our environment. What I find very fascinating is that we don't really notice how little things contribute to our lives. Trout live in rivers and streams they can also be found in cold water. Trout migrate from one place to another in order to spawn. The trout in our classroom came in as small eggs and developed into tiny swimming fish. When they first began their development they were very bright and has black eyeballs. In the Bio bus you could also see their cells and little heart. The trout also are developing stronger fins because in the beginning of their development their fins looked fragile and clear. What benefits me from having trout in the classroom is I can actually observe and react to watching the trout grow larger. Its also fun because its like having a pet fish that you see everyday except the weekends. The trout are also starting to develop patterns and seem to turn like a greenish brown.

  17. The fist time i saw the trout the were a egg and know are grown baby the have change a lot in weeks. What i learned was that the grow fast and you got treat them right so they could live. To learn more about science and to have a room that looks like a real sciencetist room. Do the trout get bigger about how many inches.

  18. i think that having trouts in our class is awsoe because im glad that these types of animals are being raised here for the first time and wen i first saw them i thought that their growth was going to take a long time to be done but it didnt it just tooka couple of weeks which is awsome and its a big experience to see the trouts growing from an egg to an actual trout so fast and its also a good experience to see them swim too and to see how much they have been developing

Over the past six weeks we have seen our little fish eggs where Mr.Fox have gotten from upstate turn in to Alevins and now they are little frys that are able take in sunlight and swim on its own instead of laying on the bottom of the net all of the time. I notice that our fishes used all of the yolk they had providing them nutrients. This year I learn that trouts are fresh and saltwater fishes. Trouts mate and spawn in freshwater but then trouts live in saltwater. One thing I found interesting is that when trouts are adults they live in salt water and when they are ready to mate they find their spawning ground they originally spawned from. Trouts are also an indicator species that help indicate if the water is pure enough . You learn and see the different stages of trouts our time and the life cycle of the fish. One question I have is how big do the trouts are going to grow until we release them into the a stream and how do trouts know where are there original spawning ground is at.

  20. Over the past 6 weeks, I've seen our trout evolve exponentially in size and appearance. At first for the first week they were in egg form, becoming larger. then then gradually some eggs hatched and others did,'t, I just believed they didn't develop enough or were just going to die off. But for the ones that did hatch were very small and transparent. I wouldn't really know how fish acted because I never really studied them like this, but they would just float in the water without making much movements. Way later; like 3 weeks later, I would see more and more of them hatch and escape the little net they were kept in. Moving around a lot more, acting what I would say what "normal" fish do. Also they were becoming longer and less apparent. Before acquiring the trout we learned about them. We learned that trout are an indicator species, which means because they are such a sensitive organism to temperature, pH levels, dissolved oxygen, and salinity in the waters that they are kept on, that they can give an immediate response to scientist about change in water. They are also an important food source to other fish.You can make a clear distinction between male and female trout because males are more colourful and hook shaped tails.Having trout in the classroom gives us students to see the life's of real scientist in a way that it gives us an opportunity to actually see how they observe and record findings. Its not like everyday my peers and I go home to see how life grows and acts.

  21. When I first saw the trout in the classroom their were small reddish orange is eggs, it took them a few days for them to hatch. When the trout hatched they still had their eggs with them, I found this very cool because I never seen fish grow and I didn’t know that they feed from their yoc. When the trout were just hatched their called alvein and don’t like the light which explains why the fish tank their were in was as dark as possible for them. Now the trout have grown a bit more and look like tiny fish with their fins, that allow them to move more freely in the larger part of the tank.

    In the six weeks that we had the trout so far I’ve learned a lot about them. For example that trout are freshwater fish and indicator species like daphnia. That means trout need specific conditions to live in an environment, therefore we can use them to tell us how health the water is by the number of fish in an area. So if their not all of trout in a lake then its probably not a very healthy lake.

    Having fish in the classroom has been an experience like no other because the students are the ones taking are of the fish. Which makes it an even better experience because we are able to get hands on work on how to raise the trout. This also is helpful because we have an example of the kinds of species we're learning about that live in freshwater in our classroom.

  22. About six weeks ago we got the trout in our classroom. The trouts are like an attraction in the room because every time someone walks in the room is like a tradition to go in the tank and watch them. I love the having the trout in our room, they're just there. The trout have evolved from different size and abilities. For example before they couldn't really swim they were just still, now they swim alone in the tank. Trouts are freshwater fish. They can't be found in an estuary, since the water is brackish. A trout is an indicator species which means they can let us know how clean is the water for species to survive. I would like to know what types of food do trout eat? and also how can we take care of them i order for all of them to survive, since some fishes start dying after a while. The fishes are a great thing to have in the classroom is like having a pet, that you don' have to train.

  23. For the past 6 weeks in my class I have seen trout changes first in their actions. Before when they were newborns they barely made any movement around the tank of water, they only moved once in a blue like they usually remained still in their place. Today the trout’s detached the piece on its side that they first feed off from and they are now swimming throughout the whole tank of water developing their fins and their body s growing.
    What I have learned about trout this year is that when they are first born, there is a piece attached to their side that they feed off and when they become older , it detaches and we have to feed them a pinch of their food for all of them to feed off.
    I think having a trout in our classroom benefits us as students because every week students have to trout duties to attend like feeding the trout checking if everything in the tank is right like for example the water temperature, bubbles is working fine, and multiple water tests.
    What I want to know about trout’s is where their species first began and how ?
