ReplyDeleteDuring our first week in environmental science we learned about the impact Hurricane Irene had on our city. One of the questions we discussed was about whether or not Mayor Bloomberg and other government officials made the right decisions in preparation for Irene.
Some of the decisions that Mayor Bloomberg made before Irene struck included shutting down subways and buses as well calling for a mandatory evacuation for all residents living in zone A. The mandatory evacuation of 300,000 people must have cost the city lots of money in lost business and prevented many people from getting to work. In fact, one of my friends who owns a local pizza shop complained to me about these very concerns. As a result, I initially questioned whether or not all of these actions were really necessary. Although, I must admit, I did stock up on water and food just in case something did happen.
Until this week I continued to harbor my doubts about whether or not the mayor made the right decisions in the time leading up to Irene. My opinion was changed in class when I read an article about the storm of 1821. During this storm a hurricane struck New York causing massive destruction. Entire buildings were destroyed, streets were flooded, and many people lost their lives.
Another reason why I now feel the mayor made the right decisions was because of a comment Maggie made in class. She reminded our group of the snowstorm that happened last winter around Christmas which caused many people to be stranded for hours on the subway. Maybe the mayor learned a lesson after having to listen to so many people who were upset in the days following the storm. In the end, like many of my classmates, I feel it is better to be safe than sorry.
During our first week of Environmental Studies, the Class discussed about Hurricane/ Tropical storm Irene. Every student had to write and discuses how our experience of Hurricane Irene went. Everyone’s experience seemed the same. The News warned people to stay prepared and alert for the Hurricane which caused everyone’s household to contain a lot of bottles of water and food.
ReplyDeleteThe most discussed question Mr. Fox asked us was: Did Major Bloomberg and Government officials react to Hurricane Irene properly? The Hurricane was not as bad as the city expected it to me because it got weaker as it hit New York, and passed other southern states. However, Major Bloomberg and government officials made sure to keep New Yorkers safe by warning people who live in Zone A that they were in danger. Battery Park was Zone A, which was expected major floorings and was demanded mandatory evacuation.
During class we read about a hurricane that happened 1821 and is known as the Great September Gale. This Hurricane hit New York hard and to prevent damage and deaths like the Great September Gale, Bloomberg and officials prepared for the worst. We also read articles of how the city lost a lot of money during the days of Hurricane Irene. Jobs were put on hold, NY Transits, cities were empty and damage repair. However, the city prepared good enough that there was hardly deaths and damage.
-Krystal Acevedo
In our first week of Environment studies, our class began to discuss about the recent hurricane that had hit us during the summer, and we also began to describe our own story of how we prepared in our own way for the hurricane Irene. Almost everyone had the same experience with the hurricane, which was almost nothing happened.
ReplyDeleteThe question that Mr. Fox kept asking us was if Mayor Bloomberg and the government prepare us enough for the hurricane. In most people’s opinions the hurricane was really nothing. It didn’t create as much disaster as everyone kept saying and weren’t as many deaths as some kept reporting was going to happen. Now what some keep forgetting is that in areas such as queens, the hurricane had hit hard. Not as much as in wind but in heavy rain. Everything in queens had been flooded and it took a great amount of money and work effort to make it come back to normal.
In class we began to read about a similar hurricane that had happen in 1821. This hurricane had actually hit New York quite hard and caused great damage. To prevent the same damage as that hurricane Bloomberg prepared for anything not matter if it was going to be hard hitting or not. We also read articles on how the officials lost a lot of money since they had to close businesses and stop major transits and movement thought out the city. They also had to cancel many jobs the following day in case it was actually bad so even more money was lost that day.
The first week of Environmental Science we looked at the recent Hurricane Irene by sharing out our personal experiences during the storm during the storm and before by showing how we prepared it wasn't a very long conversation since not much happened to us inside the city. Unlike what was being shown in the Weather Channel.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Mayor Bloomberg handled the situation perfectly he prepared for a large storm i believe that was an important factor in New York having major damages and only minor flooding having closed down public transportation and giving updates to the citizens really helped keep New York safe. Not to mention the evacuations of dangerous areas played a tremendous role in keeping New York City safe. All the loses can be easily fixed New York earns more money in a day than what we lost to that storm.
This whole situation reminds me of the Winter snow storm of 2011. In this situation Bloomberg didn't handle it well and it took weeks to get the the snow and ice off the ground. This might have been a reason why Bloomberg prepared so much this time around. Public opinion was very negative when The city woke up to snow filled streets and no plow trucks to clean up.
During the first week of environmental science we learned about the impact Hurricane Irene had on our city. One of the questions we discussed was about whether or not Mayor Bloomberg made the right decisions in preparation for Irene. Also we had to describe our hurricane Irene experience.
ReplyDeleteI believe that mayor Bloomberg did not really need to prepare the way he had did on that day. For example shutting down all the mta lines was not really nesseary because the parts that really needed help was queens, part of Brooklyn, and lower manhattan. Since the transportation were shut down the people that were living from day to day pay checks had suffered those three days without money had deal with consequences of being late with their bills and not having that much food. I think next the next time there is a hurricane they should only shut down the places that are really damaged so that people are able to go to work and still make a living.
Just where Mr. Bloomberg was over the Christmas weekend, as a snowstorm bore down on New York. I believe that during this blizzard that we should have prepared the same that we did for the hurricane. Also the same preparations the city had done to like shutting down the transportations would have been nessary for that winter.
During the first week of school, we started talking about the amount of water we use and if we ever think about it when we spending water. We as a whole class did an activity “Calculate Your Personal Water use” in this activity we had to figure out how much water we use, we had to fill out a chart and put in how many times we do each of the items listed in the chart. The chart basically had to do with the exact amount of water we use and what we use it for.
ReplyDeleteWhat I found most interesting was how much water I use in one week when I’m showering, I never thought about the time I took showering and how much it all add up to be in gallons. A question I have about this is why have I never thought about how much water I am wasting? Also how others live when they don’t have water in their house?
The way this activity has changed the thinking about my life, family, and community is that now I actually think when I’m using water for any purpose. Also how I can help out to not waist a lot of water. When I’m using the water either to shower or wash dishes I think about other humans that don’t have what I have when it has to do with water. I think it’s not so bad if we all try and save some water, only because we have water in our house and we don’t have to be going to places to get water doesn’t mean we have to take advantage of it.
Our first week of Environmental study was dedicated to the Hurricane Irene storm talking about how was it to experience a storm and accessing weather or not we acknowledge the fact that Manhattan is surrounded by water because it is an island. This storm was announced for weeks on the news and government did everything to inform us about the safety regulation, things we needed if anything were to happen basically the country was strongly prepared. Mr. Fox asked the question, Did Mayor Bloomberg and government officials react to Hurricane Irene properly? I found this topic very interesting because it really made me think about much aspect about the world because before I never thought that I would even be in a storm. It also made me think more about how we are in a place were we can be affected by things like flooding.
ReplyDeleteI was mostly interested in the fact that it made question if Mayor Bloomberg really choose the right decisions when it came to the Hurricane Irene. At first I thought that it wasn’t necessary to put people though all that stress when the storm didn’t hit us that hard, with only rain and powerful winds not destroying any mayor things in New York City. I thought that all the precautions were just a waste of money when it could have been putting into something else. After talking in Environmental Science I changed my mind I think it was good that he took all those precautions because otherwise people could have been easily killed or harm if he didn’t think the worse out of this storm and nobody knew about it.
It changed me because before I didn’t think about all the possible things that can happen good or bad things could happen and you have to be mentally and physically prepared. I would like to know about why is the reason this storm happen and how?
Hey seniors! Remember you can post on any topic we learned about this week (water usage, amount of water on earth). If you went on the trip you can also post about your experience there.
ReplyDeleteFlushing the toilette more then five times a day, brushing my teeth and taken a shower twice a day, mopping and doing the dishes everyday, drinking water every hour, having water fights, washing the car,and getting wet in the fire pump are things I have never really paid too much mind about until now. I use to think that they were just fun things to do or things I had to do and that had no consequences to them, but there are. The consequences of all this things are that it uses up to much water; leaving less water for other people in the world. People that live in place like New York City seem to think that there is a lot of water going around because there is always water coming out there kitchens' and bathrooms'. When in reality there really is a small amount of water for everyone in the world to share. So small that some people around the world don't even have enough clean water to drink.
ReplyDeleteSabina and Nafia are to sisters for Africa. They are both young girls who help their mother twice a day by fetching water form the river five minutes away form there home. Both Sabina and her sister carry 50 gallon of water form the river to their house a day. The river is the source of water for Sabina and her family, with addition to people that also live around them. Sabina and people with her living condition appreciate water more then people who live in the city because water is not as available to them. When Sabina and her family would go to the city she would be upset that everyone would wast water so care free, while her and her family have to worry every day about having enough water to drink.
I myself was so care free about the use of water until I heard about Sabina story and other children in Africa. It's a known fact that in Africa children are not named before the age of five because of the fear that they wouldn't live pass that age. In Africa one child dies every 15 seconds because of lack of clean water. Children get diarrhea or die form water carried diseases.
It's a shame that things like this happen in the world, but it is happening because we don't get together to try and educate the people about what and how the uses of water affects other people.Water is a common resource that everyone in the world needs and shares, and if everyone goes around using up all the water then it harms other people and it would soon harm everyone in the world. It is estimated that if we continue to use water the way we have for years, by 2015 there wouldn't be enough water for everyone in the world. For this reason is that things that once use to be fun for me are no that much fun because I think of the harm I am causing for the earth; our home which we need to protect and conserve.
In our first week of environmental science the topic for discussion was the impact of Hurricane Irene on our metropolitan area. At first I though ok! A topic thats common buy as we got into the depths of the discussion it all came to the importance of water. An essential resource for survival.
ReplyDeleteAt the U.N conference I was very rapt in all the different issues going on with water. It was very hard to believe that many children don't get named until they are five since at times they die before that age. Contaminated water consumption is the main cause of deaths or at times dehydration itself.
This is an issue that has more of the moral caption to lead of rather than a political problem as the solution is in the hands of humanity. Money has a big part in the solution but is all an interdepent issue as stated by several of the speakers at the conference. Therefore it's important for people to contribute in moderating the amount of water they use per day, maintaining the water clean since water can't be recycled if full of toxins.
In conclusion we should all be more thoughtful of how often we use water and for what since the amounts of death reaches 500 a day and the affected are children it's a surreal unpleasant fact. Its time to contribute to organizations and support the budget spendings because we all at times have a primal instinct known as "Survival of the Fittest" but when it comes to the life of a Child or a family in need that's when.Morality it's presented to show in the end we are all humans that deserve to live by natures course of start to end.

ReplyDeleteThe hurricane sas a very stange and frightned impat for New Yorkers and others. People that lived in New York were unaware and confuse beacause in New York there never been a Hurricane before. This wa an unexpected experience , evryone was getting prepared and ready for the Hurricane Irene. People packed food, bought flashlights, water, candles. Some people covered their windows with cardboard just in case their window broke. In others places like New Jersey, North Carolina, Virgina , people houses were flooded with water. The police had to evacuate any family that lives near water or in zone A. Alot ofpoeple buisness and house went out of electricity. NOt alot of people died but like 7 people did. Some died from heart attack, some drown , some go hit by the strong winds, and the things that were flying through th air like chunks of trees. Some people had to evacuate to their neighbor houses to be safe.
ReplyDeleteWhat i found most intersting is that the majority of people that live in New York. No harm or nothing really bad happened to them. In part of New Yoek like mahhatan,or bronx did not hit as hard as the other places. We only heard very strong winds though the windows and some of people windows broke.but thast all. After the hurricane i never thought that a hurricane would occur here in New york . Inever lived on a situation were hurricane occured. At first i as kind of nervous but after then i was very clamed.
Overall, i have learned that you always need to be prepared beacause you never know what is going to happen today or tommorow. The reason why is beacuse Mother nature does not warn us or tell us what is goingto happen. She just do what she has to do. Its part of life, the only one who could prevent this is god. From this experience now my mind has changed a lil bit, on to take more care of my enviroment. To do things that would conserve our enviroment. Us people need to mantain , and not to make it more worse than it is by affecting it by our human action and activities. Earth is the only place we living until we die and if we dont do nothing about it or atleat try to help. Really bad things going to happen god forbid. We only going to live in a damage , unsafe, and dirty place. Things unexpected could happen and really get us scared. And after some people minds will realize and put us in action to so something.

ReplyDeleteThroughout the first two weeks of Environmental Science class, we've been discussing the topic of water. In September 16, some students were given the chance to attend a water forum at the United Nations. The main reason of this forum, was to organize a conference for world leaders, academics, non- governmental organizations, and private sector representatives to talk about the first step towards the global water crisis.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most important facts that they talked about was how every year there are 1.6 million diarrheal deaths related to unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene- vast majority among children under 5. Just imagine 4,000 children dyeing everyday, some whom are weeks born, it is tragic. Another fact that was brought about during the conference was how girls often drop out of primary school, because their school lack separate toilets and easy access to safe water. It is sad to know that a young girl can get the education that she wants, just because of this reason. This was very interesting, and important to me, because it's an issue that needs to be taken care of, and if we don't do anything about it the consequences will keep getting worse. A thought that came to mind throughout the conference was, "What will we do when it's too late to even make a small change or adjustment. . ."
This changed many things in my life, especially the way i thought about water. Now i think about it everyday, and i'm trying my very best to conserve as much water as possible. I spread the word out to my family, and friends, and i am hoping they'll do the same. To me a world without water, is an empty world.
In my opinion, we are very ignorant at times. Just because we seem to have it all doesn't mean that it will be here to stay forever. Why not help out? why not reach out for those who need it the most. We need to work together to make a change towards this crisis. Not only is it affecting the world, but also the human species. Mothers in Africa don't name their children till the age of 5, because they fear that something will happen to their new borns. Why live a life this way, full of fear. . There is solutions that can be made to these problems. . why not start now. . We can all make a difference if only we try and risk things, because in the end it will all be worth it.

The first week, our topic was to talk about Hurricane Irene, and write about our experience during the incident with the hurricane, After we wrote about experience we had a class discussion and after that happens, we got to read independent about a decision that Michael Bloomberg did, when we were done reading we will get into a discussion with out group and decide if Michael Bloomberg decision was the right thing to do. The discussion about Hurricane Irene it made me think of all the horrifying damage that the hurricane did to those people who lived near the ocean, and how they don't have no power to do absolutely anything to fix it, Also how the poor people lived in the streets with no money & no life to guide them to a better and save place, it hurts hearing about their death & how it affect some people in the community.

During the first week of Environmental Science we learned about the amount of water we use in our daily lives. We used a chart to calculate the amount of gallons of water we use per week and per day.
ReplyDeleteI was really shocked at the amount of water i and some of my peers use per day. Per day i use 163 gallons of water, but in my class there is people that use more than 400 gallons. We are using up all this water and not really thinking about. There is people around the world that don't even have access to clean water and have to walk miles and up hills to get water multiple times a day.
This connects to the other thing we learned in environmental science, which is that in the entire world we only have 3% freshwater and the other 97% is salt water. This is very petrifying to me because 3% is not a lot and there many people on Earth using up this water. I think that if we all make a pact as a community, state and country we can help try to conserve this limited amount of water we have.
During this week of class, we learned about our water and the amount of access we have to water. We questioned the number of gallons we used on daily basis. On Monday, we calculated our water use. The purpose of the activity was to figure how much water we consume on a daily basis and raise awareness of how much water we use and what we use it for. Based on the activity, I use 621 gallons daily. This activity made me realize that I can try to limit the use of my water because the average daily use of water is about half than what I use. After being aware on the amount of water I use, I learned that although the Earth is surrounded by water our resources are limited. This is because according to the chart (Lesson #1) 97% of Earths water is salt water. This was shocking to know that we have a limited access to fresh water although we are surrounded by water, and I just use water at unnecessary times. For example, I leave my facet running when brushing my teeth, now I know to turn of the facet and only turn it on when needed.
ReplyDeleteReading about other people’s experience with water helped me realized that though our resources are limited, people in countries like Africa have a harder struggle to access water. The readings we did in class about Sabiha, Joseph and Aylito showed me that I should appricate the resources that are given to me. This is because unlike them, I don’t have to go collect water for my family to survive; the water comes directly to me. This week helped me on becoming more aware on the use of my water, and now I try to use less water.
The topics we learned this week made we wonder if the government plays a role in the amount of resources we have available? I wondered this because if you compare the resources New York have it is still not as limited as many countries such as Africa, Mexico. I believe that wealth also plays a role in the availability of resources because in this society money determines everything.
This first full week of Environmental Science was very exciting. We learned and talked about a lot of things. The main topic of this trimester is water. We talk about our experience when hurricane Irene hit New York City. We also discuss whether or not Mayor Bloomberg made the right decision for Irene. This is because the hurricane was not really strong and it cost a lot of money to do everything he did. Mayor Bloomberg ordered to shut down subways and buses and ordered a mandatory evacuation for all residents living in zone A. Some New Yorkers think that he went a little over board because of the snowstorm that happened last winter. This is important because the people were truck on the road. I remember talking to Lynnette who was with her dad in the Bronx. She had told me that it had taken her more than 3 hour to get home.
ReplyDeleteThis week we also talked about the amount of water we use weekly. We used a chart to calculate the amount of gallons of water we use daily and weekly. Some people like myself had pretty high numbers. My results said that in a day I use 444.57 gallons of water. In a week it said that I use 3112 gallons of water. To me it seem very high number compare to very one else. This is why I'm going to try to reduce the amount of water I use daily. I am going to do this by turning of the facet when I'm not using it. I will also take shorter showers.
Finally this week we talked about the amount of fresh water for everyone. There is only 3% of fresh water for everyone in the world. Most of the water we have is salt water 97%. This is important because it shows why we should work really hard to conserve water. A big way that we could do this is by recycling water like in New York City.
During the week in environmental science we did an activity on the amount of water we consume throughout the week. We charted the amount of time we last in the shower and the number of times we used the toilet ans washed our hands. In the end we calculated the amount of gallons we used per day.
ReplyDeletePersonally i used about 200 gallons per day. Some people in our class had about 500 gallons per day. We are very careless to the amount of water we use each day. People in Africa need to go to they closest river to physically get the water. Some people have to monitor the amount of water used. Not everyone has the same access to water that we do.
The amount of fresh water in the world is very minimum compared to the amount of salt water. The ice caps are the largest body of fresh water but melting the ice caps would disturb the equilibrium of that environment. We need to be careful with the amount of water we use each day because one day we might not have the same acces to water we do today.
During the first week of environmental science each student received a packet to jot down how many gallons of water the use weekly. i completed my packet and at the end is when i realize that an average person in the united states use a lot of gallons of water weekly. i told my self that we are lucky people because we use a lot of water per week while other countries ares struggling for water.
ReplyDeleteWhat i found interesting about this activities is that i never thought about how much water i use weekly because when i use water i tell myself who cares about the amount of water i use. After i saw how much water i use weekly i told myself that some people in poor countries are dying of diseases because they do not have fresh water and on earth their is only 3 percent of fresh water available. i said that i need to reduce the amount of water i use per week. if i reduced the amount of water i water i used per week then better things will happen.
this has changed the way i think about life because now when i use water i tell myself how many gallons of water did i just use. i also want to reduced the amount of water i used per week because now i think wasting water is stupid and nonsense because people in poor countries are looking for fresh water but they can't find it. in fact people in poor countries have to go to the rivers to get water. water from the river tend to be dirty and this is one reason that people from poor countries get a lot of bad diseases. water is one of the most important thing in life and i realized that we should limit the amount of water we use per week by a little bit at least.
Ever thought about the importance and influence of water in your life, someone else's water? I didn't either until this week in environmental science. Mr. Fox brought to my attention many points about water this week. This included how much water I waste a day, how different people around the world use and their access to water in different region and lastly the amount of water we truly have left.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, everyone in the world uses different amounts of water every day. I have access to an unlimited amount of water, although I don’t take as much advantage as I could or some people around my neighborhood do. I can still find many ways to preserve more water every day by. By doing the simplest tasks such as having two days just to wash clothes rather than 3 days, turning of the faucet when brushing my teeth instead of letting the water run, letting dishes pile up and wash them later rather than constantly washing them. It is very important to conserve water since that amount of fresh water that we have is scarce although I believe since we are surrounded by water that water was unlimited.
In the world there is 97% of salt water while only 3% is fresh water. Out of this 3% only 2/3 is accessible to humans. That means that most people suffer to get fresh water in some regions of the world such as Africa as we learned in class. Many women have to drop out of school at the age of 8 to carry 50 pounds of water every day from their homes to the closest water way. I learned that 3.3 million children under 5 years of age die due to the lack of clean water, while Americans here are wasting millions and millions of gallons of water a day by just simply taking a shower.
In conclusion, I believe that we should do something about this. Like our experiment showed us when people are more aware they can make plans to conserve so that they benefit everyone rather than just a few people. As a nation we should monitor the amount of water that we use every day and make a goal for everyone to be fair and have equal amount and access to water. This could save millions of lives that are at stake.
During the first week of environmental science we have calculated our personal water use. At first on an estimated guess i thought that i use between 60-80 gallons of water a day. Turns out i use about 432 gallons daily. In one week i use about 3024 gallons.
ReplyDeleteWe also read the stories of two people's perspective on water. One of them was Sabiha and took place in Africa. Her case is very different from mine because she has to conserve the water that she uses. She has to go to the river and get buckets after buckets of water daily in order for her family to have water. I only have to turn on a faucet and i have access to clean water instantly in the next room in my apartment. It makes me feel a little guilty that i don't conserve as much water as i could, i instead waste it when i sometimes leave it running for no reason.
Finding out that there is only 3% of freshwater on earth distributed but that we only have access to only less than 1% makes you think for a moment how you may have access to that 1% but millions of people don't.
To help conserve water there is something i could do. I could start taking shorter showers since i tend to take unnecessarily long ones. I think that if Sabiha and Nafia bring home about 50 gallons of water per day that i could limit my water consumption to this amount because after i reviewed my daily water consumption a lot of water goes to waste when i leave it running. I don't think i would choose to use that amount but if that's the circumstance i wouldn't complain because there is people that don't have access to clean water let alone water at all on Earth.
On our first day of Environmental Science, we focused on the topic of water. In an activity we filled out a Personal Water Use Chart to figure out how many gallons of water we use in a day. Before the activity, we made guesses of how much we use and everyone made small guesses. After the activity, everyone was shocked to see that our guesses were nowhere near the actual results. My guess was 10 gallons a day and my results were 227.786 gallons a day.
ReplyDeleteI felt very guilty after that activity because I do care about our world and I thought I was doing an okay job at trying to limit the things that affect the Earth. I hate when faucets are left on so before we did the activity I figured that I didn’t waste a lot of water since I like to save it on a usual basis. Although, the chart says I’m above the average so I was wrong.
I’m glad that we did this activity because I know that I will continue to make an effort to try and help save water and other important things such as energy but I don’t know what others will do. Maybe they will limit themselves and maybe they won’t. There are people that don’t think our water consumptions are a problem but it is. Hopefully, this activity helped by opening our eyes to realize that we have to change some things. Change is hard but it isn’t impossible.
In the second week of school we learned about water and how much gallons of water we use in a day, and what can we do to reduce the amount of water we use? We first filled up a chart to which included all the things that make us use water for example, brushing our teeth, showering, doing the loads of laundry, etc. then we read two situations in which two individuals struggle to get water through their house. Unlike people who live in New York City others struggle to get water through there house and have to travel to the river to get water for their daily necessities.
ReplyDeleteI found this interesting because it made me realize that I don’t really think to much of other people not having water because I do have water. I want to know why is it harder for people in poor communities to get water than people who live in New York City. It hasn’t changed my thinking about my life, family, or my country. I want to know exactly where the water comes from. Why don’t the people who live in poor communities make canals from the river to there house so that they don’t have to travel back and forth?

ReplyDeleteA topic we discussed in class this week was the amount of water we consume and use up in our lives. In class we filled out a table, "Calculate Your Personal Water" to calculate the amount of water we use in a week and our average daily. We discovered that daily most of us consume more than 300 gallons a day. Mr. Fox asked us, "What will we do to minimize the amount of water we use?".
I decided to minimize the time I last showering. Instead of showering 30minutes, minimize it to 10 to 15minutes. Also, try to wash all my clothes once a week and not leave the water running. What influenced my decision was learning about how there isn't a lot of water on this Earth and there are people who don't have easy access to clean water.
In "The Burden of Thirst" by Tina Rosenberg, Aylito Binayo had to give up her education [drop out of school at the age of 8] to help her mother gather water from the Torio River. The Toiro River, is contaminated and is dirty water. Binayo lives on a mountain, Foro; everyday she has to climb down the mountain daily to fetch water for her family.
Unfortunately for Binayo, she must do multiple jobs, if she doesn't she is consider lazy amongst the village. She must carry at least 50 pounds of water on her back. Binayo doesn't shower daily, she washes clothes yearly, has no hygiene [doesn't have soap and washes her hands maybe once a day] and she doesn't have clean water to drink. Due to this, her family gets sick very often and the only money they have is to pay for their sickness and not soap. Binayo's living condition motivated me even more to limit the amount of water I use daily. Just to know that many families have to distribute the water they by portions makes me feel a little disgusted with myself. I use up water as if there is an unlimited amount yet many families don't have easy access to it and don't have a lot of water to use.

ReplyDeleteAt the beginning of this week class of Enviromental Science we had to read a text called "City At The Water's Edge (A Natural History of New York)" and answered some questions, wich captured my mind because of the things us, humans, had done to prevent and change the course of nature.
Many natural disasters had passed in the history of New York taking everything in its path and leaving the shattered coast, the sea more inward and less sand on the coast, causing homes and businesses in the banks be swallowed by the sea. Ignoring these warnings we continue building structures to avoid these natural effects, causing more damage to nature in short and long terms. I wonder if in my country, Dominican Republic, are also taken procedures against these things that have to happen, wich are so expensive and not solve the problem but worsen the situation.
While I was reading I kept surprised by those structures that I see in beaches and rivers, and did not know why they were there altough now I do. Also I realize, with more reasons than before reading this text, that we are trying to survive by destroying nature and that nature trying to survive is going to destroy us.

ReplyDeleteIn the beginning of Environmental Science we talked about the water we use on a daily basis. We then, answered questions and focused on the amount of water we waste. The results of the amount of water i waste was 233 gallons, and in my hypothesis i had said i wasted 5 gallons per day. But little did i know that i wasted more gallons then ever! I never really thought i wasted so much water, but after the activity we did i then realized and took in consideration that water is an important resource in life. After reading articles and experimenting activities i then realized that people are selfish and don't realize that they should share water with others. The thought of just thinking about ourselves is not the right choice.
During the first week of environmental science,we focused on the topic of water. First, we began writing a reflection on how many gallons of water we think we use each day, and everyone had the chance to make their random guesses. Later, we started an activity by filling out charts on the amount of water we use in our daily lives and compare it to our estimation. Before, I made an estimation saying that I use a couple hundreds of gallon, but I actually use 311 each day and about 2170 gallon a week.
ReplyDeleteAfter being done with the activity,we also read about other people's situation and see how they use and get water. First we read about sabiha and learned that water was very important to her family, and that she and her sister had to grab buckets in order to bring water into their home. While they are going out to get water, they are witnessing wealthy people opening their faucets to get water. As for Joseph, he suffered a drought which means he was struggling to get water. After finding out what these people went through, I felt the need to conserved and limit the amount of water I use because we live in a world of inequality, not everyone has water like we do.
In the world, there are about 3 percent of fresh water, and one percent is usable for humans. There are basically 99 percent of water that can't be used in the earth. This is important because it shows how people especially in Africa struggle to get water. After reading the Burden of thirst, I notice fresh water has a huge factor on a person's health, and it can be use to disinfect people that have diseases. The world would be much better if we help by conserved more water.
There are a lot of things I can do to limit the amount of water use. I need to spend less more time in the shower, taking a bath, flushing toilet, and wash dishes. Especially in the shower because I use to take 45 minutes. Before, I did not care about the amount water that was being use, but now it is really a problem because some people don't have water.
On our first week in environmental science class we learned about the usage of water and the effects it has on the people on earth. When calculating how much water I used, I thought about how much I waste water. Then, with the trip to the United Nations I saw the comparisons between The country's in Africa and the United States. This shows how some people have no clean access to water and cant afford to get the necessary water to survive. Water depletion is going to be a primary concern in the many years to come and building alternatives is necessary for the future generations to come. This was one reason and cause to try and build a more sustainable water recycling system.

ReplyDeleteDuring the first week of school we focused on the amount of water we waste in our daily basic. We filled out a Personal Water Use Chart to figure out how many gallons of water we use in a day.The first thing we had to do was guess how many gallons we drink in a day,and my guessed was 9 gallons. But the amount of water I use I didnt expected it would be that much which it was 418.428 per day.
ReplyDeleteI found this interesting, because I would have never taught that I waste so much water per day.I wonder where the water we use in our daily basic comes from and goes too.does it go through a long process or its a easy process.
It makes me realize how much water we waste by simply leaving the faucets open and letting the water run without using it sometime. This activity made me realize that here in New York we just dont think about the amount of water we are using and wasting,we also dont think of those that are in need or cant have easy access to clean water.
During the first week of school, we learned about water consumption. We calculated how much water we use in a daily basis. Everything is calculated by gallons except for showers and washing our hands and face. In a week i use 1,274 gallons and 182 gallons per day.
ReplyDeleteWhat really changed my mind on how much water i should use was the article i read in class called "The Burden of Thirst" by Tina Rosenburg. This article is mostly about a young woman named Binayo who lives in a very poor and undeveloped area named Foro. Binayo had to drop out of school in order to get water supply for her family. She walks to the river approximately 10 times per day to get water. In addition, she doesn't get fresh water like we do. Most of the water she gets is dirty water. In the article she says, " Please don't jump...it makes the water dirtier". The reason why Binayo told those little kids to stop jumping was because the mud will get into the river and can be sent down to Binayo's “area” of getting water. This story motivated me to recycle and conserve water. Although i am lucky compared to many individuals in Africa, we still don’t have enough fresh water in the world, and some day there would be a lack of fresh water. People who live in mountains like the character Joseph from New Mexico and Binayo from Foro, don't really have the advantages we do. Their water is harder to get since they have to travel to the river and carry gallons of water up a mountain.
I will try to conserve water most importantly because there is only 3% of fresh water and the rest is salt water. Glaciers are fresh water but we cannot drink this water because it is not for us. Deep ground under water is also bad for us because it is not very clean. The water that we drink is from the lake's surface and shallow ground water. To conserve water i will take less time showering, and turn off the faucets while washing the dishes. It is a benefit that i can get fresh water because not everyone can, including those who live in vulnerable countries.
The first week of Environmental Science we learned about the amount of water we use daily in our lives. We did this by using charts to calculate the amount of gallons of water we use per week as well as per day.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised and shocked to find out how much water I really use because I didn’t think I used a lot of water. Per day I use about 167 gallons of water, But in my class and probably the whole grade there was people who had more than 400 or 500 gallons of water. This only means that we as humans take our water for granted and are wasting it. There are people who have to travel a lot to get clean water.
This connects to what we learned in Environmental Science that same week that the world has 3% of fresh water and that the other percents is salt water which is 97%. Even though we have 3% of fresh water we only use a small percentage of it because the other parts are water that we can’t access. This is shocking to me because 3% is not a lot of water for humans on earth to use. This activity has opened up my eyes and made realize that conserving water is very important I am more aware now after this activity.

Throughout the first week of school we have been talking about hurricanes and water. How hurricanes impact our life style and our world around us. Also how water impacts our life and the world around us as well. I have discovered many realizations throughout this week that I have never thought of before or ever even considered.
ReplyDeleteBut what really got my attention was the topic of water. Water is very important and everyone uses it in various different ways. Last week we did a small class activity that had to do with calculating out personal water use. My results were very surprising. In the end I used 168.14 gallons of water per day. Imagine the use per week! This activity led us towards asking more questions about water and its different uses. For example: What are new ways we can help in order to preserve water? And why is water so scarce? This also led us to read two life stories of two very different people of who live in Africa and in New Mexico. There were many differences as well as similarities.
In the end we learned about Earth’s water. Discovering different conclusions about the Earth like there is more salt water around the Earth than there is fresh water and that we humans consume more salt water than fresh water made me realize that I need to help preserve more water when I perform my daily activities like showering, brushing my teeth, doing the dishes etc.
In conclusion there are many ways in which we can all help conserve water. Even if it’s doing the smallest activity it will make a difference and it could even impact our world.

Class started with a simple question “was mayor Bloomberg’s reaction for Hurricane Irene appriopriate.” Majority of the class decided that it was safe to say that mayor Bloomberg’s approach for Hurricane Irene was effective, and safe. What really won them over is the fact that Mayor Bloomberg’s speech promoted people to stay on the safe side. We learnt what really caused hurricane Irene to form, and the damages of it.
ReplyDeleteMoreover to the lesson we find out that the topic for the unit was water, an element that is so essiental to humans for survival. With warm up questions we progressed into the topic . One question that stuck in my mind was “how much water do you use.” I began to review my day by the number of times I had water acess. In the back of my mind I was telling myself it did not matter because either way our water is recyeled and it is all over the world, such an element vital to us must be infinate because we use it a lot. We preformed an activity to see the average amount of water we use, this included showers, gardening, car wash, cooking, and so forth. In the end the average amount of water I use each day was lower than I expected. Perhaps it was because I do not do much chores around the house that require water.
I Realized how different the thought of water was in my mind compared to real life. We saw charts that showed us the amount of sea water compared to fresh water and of the drinkable water many are difficult to obtain. Results were drastic. Further into the lesson we read stories about difficulties people have with obtaining water. I felt fortunate because in order for many people in different places to get water they much work hard. Many had to give up going to school because getting water required that much time. Further more, the lack of water in other countries present hardships for people because without water hygine is difficult to maintain causing people can get many diseases and or die.
Before, water did not seem important to me but when I saw how unstable water may be for others people I noticed the hostility of the situation. Most of use waste water more than needed, therefore something has to be changed.

ReplyDeleteBefore the topic of wasting water occurred I believed that my usage of water and that of my community did not make any negative impact what so ever in the world, but as we went deeper into the topic I discovered things that I didn’t know about the world and certainly myself.
One activity that I have encountered was figuring out how much water do I use (in gallons) daily. At first thought I said a number that was not even 2 times how much water I actually use, I said 40 gallons. We thought about how much water we use in the shower, brushing teeth, washing face and etc and the numbers that followed when I added all these results up were pretty shocking. The number of gallons I use in a week were in the thousands! When I thought my numbers couldn’t get any words I heard the numbers of my classmates were almost surreal.
Even after this activity I still did not have any idea, how my water usage has any connection to anything negative after the passages I read. The passages I read were about two people one in Africa, and one in New Mexico I read their struggles to get water, and how they don’t contain an easy access to water as we do. I finally saw how I abuse my water privileges and how they cherish water and need it not only to survive but to work.
After this whole activity I did reflect on this topic of water and tried to cut my water usages shorter. Now surprisingly enough I don’t need the soothing sound of water; as I brush my teeth and as I scrub the dishes. I believe we should make a difference in other countries and provide them with a reliable water system, and stop abusing our water privileges.
This week in science class we learned about water and how it impacts our lives. We used a calculator to figure out how much water we consume on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteI predicted that I use about 12 gallons of water per day. When I used the water calculator, I found out I actually consume about 250 gallons of water a day. I was really surprised. I didn't realize how much I didnt appreciate water, especially when I read the stories about Zabiha and Joseph who basically need water to survive.
Zabiha needs to walk for a good 10 minutes to a river in order to get water. Joseph needs water to grow grass so his cattle can eat. If Joseph runs out of water, then his cattle won't have food and then he'd have to sell them, but that's the way his family gets money.
This excercise made me realize how much I need to appreciate the resources I have, especially ones that are vital. I have stopped wasting water. For example, when I'm brushing my teeth, I turn the faucet off until I need to wash out my mouth.
-Danya Gutierrez
A topic we discussed in class this week was the amount of water we consume and how the amount of water we used is affecting the world. In class we were filling up a servey on all the things we used that has to do with water to calculate the total of gallon we use daily so that we could realized the impact that we are making in this world. After doing the survey i realized that i use 179 gallons of water every day. Eventhough this is below the regular average i think i could make changes on my daily water used by not running the water while i am brushing my teeth or take less time taking a shower.
ReplyDeleteAlso another thing that i learned this week was that their people in another countries that have to walk long miles to get water for their family while we get water directly to our house without thinking ablout it. Their kid in africa that dont have an education or dont go to school because they have to get water for their families. Sometimes thier only a little bit of water so many mother have to fight in orfer to get water for their kids. In africa thousand of kids die daily due to water resources. Therefore something hsa to be changed.
In our Environmental Science class we've been learning and discussing about water and its impact. This week during class Mr.Fox asked us to guess how many gallons of water we use a day after we guessed we calculated our personal water usage. I found out that I use about 221.2 gallons of water a day. I didn't realize I used that much water. I later found out that the average American uses about 80-100 gallons of water a day, so I was using water more than the average American.
ReplyDeleteThe reason on why I find this topic so interesting is because I realized that I'm using more than an American average. Most of my peers and I are abusing the amount of water that we have. While there are other locations that barely have any water for people to survive.
Now since knowing this I'll try to cut down on my daily water usage. First I'm gonna try to take shorter showers, since I use the most water during that activity and also I'm not gonna let the water run anymore when I brush my teeth since I tend to do that every time. I would also like to know more techniques on how I can shorter my water usage
Throughout the first week of environmental science class we focused on water. Many humans use hundreds of gallons of water daily. However, there isn't a great amount of freshwater in the world. Therefore, we should make sure that we do not waste water. We calculated an average of how many gallons of water we use daily. It allowed me to think of how I can decrease my water usage. I learned that there are many families around the world that do not have enough water and depend on water for their natural resources.
ReplyDeleteWe also talked about hurricane Irene and how Mayor Bloomberg prepared New York City ahead of time. Mayor Bloomberg made sure to play it rather safe than sorry for this natural disaster. Bloomberg made sure that families near the coastlines evacuated for their safety.
For our first week in environmental science we learned about various things that some people might not learn about in a month. One thing that we learned about was the impact humans like us have had on our cities . In my opinion the question of the week that sums it all up is How do humans play a role in the conservation of water and how can we better it.
ReplyDeleteAs one of the lucky kids who got chosen to go on the trip to the U.N. I got to experience something that i consider life changing as these people addressed the issues our world is facing towards water. It tells us what we do wrong how it effects us and how to fix this issue. Although it will be hard to get through to everyone with meetings like this more often a majority of people would change their opinions. This meeting helped me realize how carelessly we use something so vital that in other countries people are killing and dyeing for and from.
Until this week I continued to be one of the people using water carelessly. After this meeting pointed out things that harm our worlds water such as flushing things down the toilet that shouldn't be flushed. After this meeting I have tried to the best of my ability to amend this horrid actions .
dyeing
Another reason why I now feel like this meeting was a great break through for everyone who attended is because they made you realize just how dangerous this can be.Imagine how life would be with out water.Hectic right? Now yea of course why should we care we have it now but his planet has given you its resources we should at-least reward it by using it wisely.Another reason is that we all care about our family and we would all do everything and anything to protect them so mistreating this water we have now will cause your future kids and family members to suffer for your actions. This goes to show you just how vital and helpful saving and using water with care can be not only for yourself but for everyone else
During the first week in my science class me along with my classmates were figuring out how much water we consume on a daily basis. I learned that i consume 302 gallons of water a day.
ReplyDeleteThis also made me realize that i have to consume less water because tons of gallons are wasted in a day without needing too. I figured out that i need to close the water while i brush my teeth and i should turn off the water when i am putting soup on my body. I also learned that other countries in the world do not have access o clean water as the united states does.
During the first week of environmental studies we have discussed the topics of hurricane Irene, should we let nature take its paths and the amount of water we use on a daily basis and how can we conserve it. Hurricane Irene was a storm that had most of the NYC tenants worried about how Dangerous its effect will be, we mentioned how major Bloomberg prepared the city in order to have the minimum amount of danger if any danger was received at all.
ReplyDeleteWe also discussed whether or not should we let natures takes its path, by this we meant whether or not should we keep rebuilding places that are bound to be affected by nature such as New Orleans and many other Places in Long Island, NY. we talked about many of the terms used for water rebuilding structures such as "levees".
Last but not least we learned about how much we used compared to how much water is available for our use. We learned the storied of two teenagers that go by the name of Zabiha and Joseph and how much they appreciated and need water. We also learned about how many gallons of water we used on a daily basis. This was pretty interesting when we found out the percentage of water that was available for use it made me realize that I should preserve water more and limit the amount I used.
Hurricane Irene
ReplyDeleteMy experience during hurricane Irene was probably very different from many people. The same day Irene was going to hit , i was on a 6:00am flight on my way back home from Florida. During this experience i was hoping to get home to my mother because my brother was in college and my father in the Dominican Republic. To prepare ourselves my mother bought a 24 pack of bottled water. My mother also cooked a feast of food that would probably last 1 week in this house.
In Mr Fox class i learned that the U.S wasted 10.1 billion dollars on the damages of the hurricane. I also learned that this Hurricane started in West Africa and made its way through the east coast. This was a type 1 hurricane as it hit Maryland and North Carolina. As it made its way to New York and New Jersey it became a tropical storm.Although it became a storm it still caused floods in many places, especially the places that were next to the beaches. The question of the day in Mr Fox class was " Was Bloomberg correct in how he prepared for the storm?" I believe that he exaggerated a bit but then again he did what was best for New York. He is trying to prepare us. Its worth the experience and helpful for future Hurricanes that would cause more damage, we would be ready for it.

ReplyDeleteOverall, this week I learned a lot, but the water distribution topic was the most significant. We were asked to guess how many gallons of water we use in our household on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteI guessed around 50 gallons a day and I thought 50 was a good number compared to other household who hold more than two people. Afterwards, I filled out a graph that ascertains how much water I accumulate in a year. The graph showed that use about 2263.25 gallons of water a week, by viding that number by 7 to check how much I use in a day, 323.321 gallons was my result. I was amazed when I saw this result, and to think that there is only 3% of freshwater left on earth
This significance is very low. When I learned of this, I was scared. However, I’m not going to be scared all my life and wait until Earth is dry, I’m going to take action. Small changes in your life can rally make a difference in the long run. Turning the off the sink while brushing your teeth, using less water when mopping, and taking shorter showers are steps that I’m going to take to make a difference in our lives.
-Franciel Santo
Throughout the first week of Environmental Studies, I studied the significance of hurricane Irene and how it effects society. Through the investigation, we came across the controversial question on whether or not society should let nature takes its course or continue to rebuild damaged property due to natural disasters. Eventually, we came to study to the importance of water.
ReplyDeleteAs I became aware on how limited our water sources were, I started to think of ways that I can contribute to society. I discovered that I personally use about 1176 gallons of water every week. I was dumbfounded, and decided that the consumption of water was too much for just one individual as myself. Thus, I started to think of ways that I can use less water since the amount of accessible water was less than 1%.
As I learned this, I also learned while I have unlimited access to fresh water, there were other people on this world that barely had access to water and died from lack of it. Up to 3 million people die from the consumption of dirty water and lack of hygiene. I thought it was selfish that I used water without precaution while other people on the world just from not having access to water. Therefore, I decided to not take for granted the things that I have access to, even if they may not seem like a big deal because I have access to it.
The topic of this week was water resources.I found this interesting because it gave me a insight on how the worlds resource were not just my city's water sources. We learned that in some places there isn't ruining water like in the reading where a girl from Kenya has to walk to a river to get water for her and her family.
ReplyDeleteThe class learned that even thou the world is covered by water only 3% of it is fresh water and of that we only access 1/3 of it. This made me think that even though people in New York might feel like water is unlimited it really isn't. We also learned that in third world counties a person only uses 5 gallons per day while in new york the average person uses 100 gallons.
This has made me think about my water consumption because I use more than the average person. This has made me want to change the way I use water and how to save water because water might not be there for ever.
During the first week of environmental science we focusd on water and figuring out how much water we use and what can be done to make the situation better. We also looked at two examples of people that has to limit their water.
ReplyDeleteMost of us realized that we use more water then what we thought we used. After looking at the two graph displayed about the earth's water made me realize that people need to start using water wisely because there isn't enough fresh water on earth. This is really important to me because i can't imagine what would happen to us when the water runs out. I wonder how long would it take for the fresh water on earth to dissapear. Today there is only 3% of fresh water.
Some things that people can do that would help the situation is take shorter showers, turn off the water while brushing their teeth, doing their laundry in the night time and more.
Looking at the stories of Sabiha from Africa and Joseph from New Mexico really touched me because they have too many resposibilities in their lives. Sabiha has to carry buckets of water home when i only have to turn the faucet and water comes out. Joseph has to limit water. This makes me appreciate water.
During our first week of environmental science we focused on water and the ways we use it. Water is very valuable and precious. In class and at home we read numerous stories/articles about others in need of water around the world.
ReplyDeleteDuring class we all got an estimate on how much water we use per week, measured in gallons. We were all very surprise on the amounts of water we are using. We also quickly thought of how we can save water. We also had in mind the effects that it would have on us, if water was no longer there for us.
We can help our world by limiting the amount of water we use during the time where we use it the mos, and where its unnecessary to use so much of it.
Water is something that no human being can be without. Even in the stories about people that need to get it at rivers, are willing to sacrifice their lives and drink contaminated water; need it that bad. This should us all love water and use it wisely.
Jose Moran
ReplyDeleteIn the first week of environmental science we focused on our water usage of every individual. After calculating my water usage per day in class, I learned that my water usage per day is about 505.75 gallons. I also learned that the amount of fresh water left is about 1% of all the water in the wolrd.
I found this interesting because it was he first time i got to find out how much water i use everyday. One question that i have is what the government is doing about the water issue. If they know that the amount of fresh water is decreasing, what are the next steps they are taking.
This activity has helped me think about different ways i can save water. For example, i think i can shower and brush my teeth at the same time so that my water usage can decrease. Lastly, i should only take showers instead baths because they waste way too much water.
Water has to be the one resource we use from the very beginning of the day to the time we fall asleep. So it was great that during this week many of my question dealing with water where answered. There was question in specific I wanted to know the answer to. The question was; what water should I drink? My mother usually buys packs of water bottles from bj’s and we tend to buy the most “natural” looking water. But after this week in class and the wonderful opportunity I received to go to the United Nation Water forum I realized I don’t need to waste money in water bottles. New York in City has the Best tap Water. I couldn’t believe it but its true. When I was a little girl my family always
ReplyDeletetold me don’t drink tap water make sure not to drink the water when your brushing your teeth because you might die. I was satisfied to go Friday afternoon and prove them all wrong.
Our world has a limited amount of fresh water available for humans to use. There is over 10 billion people on earth and only 2.3% of fresh water available for our consumption. The most important thing about the class was learning how I can make a difference. Many of us take water for granted. In most countries people have to use less than 50 gallons of water a day where hear in New York City we use more than 200 gallons a day. Going to the United Nation was the best experince I have had so far this year. Not only was I surrounded by very smart people, who motivated me to do more than by best because if I want something its possible for me to get it. . I also learned more ways to help my environment by conserving water. Some ways you can save water are easy to do straight form home. Just by turning of your facet while your brushing your teeth our taking quicker showers you are contributing to save or water.

This week we were able to learn how water follows us every where meaning that water is part of our everyday life. We use it in the beggining of our day when we brush our teeth , take a bath to making koolaid to washing the dishes to flushing the toilet to laundry to drinking water. These are just examples of how one person uses water in one day , but as planet we probably use billions of gallons a day . I understand that water is a necessity but as time progresses and the world becomes more populated there will be less water to spare, and that cause complications for the human race.
ReplyDeleteSomething that I learned this week in Enviromental Science is that fresh water is very limited. And us humans are taking advantage of all the water we get. On average we use 100 gallons of water while people like in africa only have access to 5 gallons of water. Theres on 1/3 of fresh water and the rest is water we can not use domestcally. One of the documents said it perfectly we need water, water does not need us.
ReplyDeleteThis week in environmental science we learned about the amount of water that we consume in one week. We wrote down how much water we consume while living our lives normally and using house hold items. We first took a guest in how much water we thought that we consumed but then we calculated the actual water use and they were very different. Me in particular my results happened to be way more than what I had originally thought.
ReplyDeleteI first estimated that I used about 20 gallons a day but when I was done with the activity I actually ended up using 324 gallons a day and 2338.5 a week. I realized that the thing that I did that used up the most water was me taking showers. After evaluating my own water waste and the amount that my class averaged out I realize that that is a lot of water. Compared to other countries and even some states in our country we have an infinite amount of water we don’t think about the consequences since were so use to having it.
When I read about the kids who have their life stories about how they get their water. When I read this I saw that Sabia that lives in Africa has to go to a river and fill up buckets of water and bring them back to her village. That made me think that those kids can live with just a couple of buckets of water a day I could at least limit my over excessive water use and convince those around me to do the same. I would like to limit the amount of water I use taking a shower and turn off the faucet when I’m brushing my teeth it’s the least I can do compared to the hardships that people suffer on a daily just getting water.
In the first week of environmental science we learned and studied how many gallons us as individuals use per day.daily I use 100 gallons of water this includes dishes, washing my face, hands, brushing my teeth, showers, and flushing the toilet.we in the United States use water selfishly because we do not see the amount of water we have. Its amazing how much water i use compare to the amount of water sabiha from Africa uses. In Africa they don’t have proper pluming so they have to fetch their water from a river or a canal to meet their needs.since in Africa they don’t have sufficient water they use it wisely to conserve as much of the water as possible for the future. In the U.S we just use and use and never realize how much we have left because we don’t actually see where we get our water from. Most water consumers in the U.S don’t even know where their water comes from.
ReplyDeleteJuan Rosa
During the first week of environmental science, we spoke about Hurricane Irene, and to predict the amount of water that we think we consume throughout a day and yearly. We learned that people waste about 324 gallons of fresh water daily and 2338.5 gallons a week. Notice that it isn’t just water its fresh water which makes it more hard to believe because in other countries such as Africa and Dominican Republic die for a single gallon of freshwater. Freshwater is a source that is vital to most New Yorkers because every day we depend more and more on it. We learned that us New Yorkers are should be much desired to have fresh water on a daily basis. We also read an article that was about a kid, Sabia who has to go to the river and fill buckets up with water, then travel all the way to her village to provide her family with fresh water. When I read this I noticed that when I was a kid I never had to do so much work in order to get fresh water. All I had to do was open the faucet and slide in a cup, that’s nothing compared to the things Sabia did. I think that people should get more informed about where their water comes from and know how valuable it is in countries that are I need. If people become more informed, people are more likely to waste less water, and give water the value that it really deserves. Most of us who live in New York aren’t aware of the process water has to go through before it reaches our homes. That is why we are careless and leave our faucet running when we aren’t really utilizing it. These first few days I’ve learned that fresh water is very limited and we are taking advantage of it, which is the opposite of what we should be doing. If something is hard to get, treasure it and don’t take advantage of it because one day it’ll run out then we will be doing the things that we once were told to do.
ReplyDeleteIts the beginning of a brand new year and this year for science, we will be learning lots about the environmental aspect of it. We touched on many different topics this opening week but one that de
ReplyDeletefinitely stood out to me the most was the one about how much water do we utilize everyday. I found out that I use up to 100 gallons of water per day. I’d say this is a pretty good amount compared to the other students who shared their results during our class discussion. Some students ended up with numbers op to 400 gallons! That is crazy! This topic stood out to me the most because obviously I use water each and everyday but not once does it occur to me, how much water that I really use. I never think about the consequences and the damage that my environment can take with all this usage of water that is said to be very limited. What has to be done? Well, one thing thing that I can do is cut the time that I spend in the shower because according to my results, its the place where most of my water consumpyion comes from. I can also turn the tap whilst brushing my teeth because I always leave it on while brushing my teeth.
Our first week of class we began to discuss about the recent hurricane that had hit us during the summer time, and we also began to describe our own story of how we prepared in our own way for the hurricane Irene. Almost everyone had the same experience with the hurricane, which was almost nothing happened. But we still prepared our selves because the exaggeration from the news cast around the city including the big hyperbole from our own Mayor although the safety precautions were taken to protect us citizens.
ReplyDeleteI believe that mayor Bloomberg did not really need to prepare the way he had did on that day. For example shutting down all the MTA lines buses and trains was really unnecessary because the only place that really needed help was Queens, and some parts of Brooklyn, and lower Manhattan. Since the transportation were shut down the people that were living from day to day pay checks had suffered those three days without money had deal with consequences of being late with their bills and not having that much food. Another consequence that could have taken place is that if people tried to use their cars it was hard for some people in many neighborhoods because trees were broken from the strong winds and some trees took out electrical wires and destroyed some cars and or caused a lot of damage to them.
