Week 5 Blog Post - Due Sunday 10/16 @ midnight

  1. This week in Environmental Science we talked about recycling and how has it changed through out the years and what does that say about the environment we live in.

First on Wednesday Mr fox took us on a trip to the Bronx river , we got to go canoeing and many people go to test the water to see how clean it is. While canoeing i was noticing that their was many plastic bottles that were at the edges of the river. This made me think back of the video clip we saw in class which talked about what happens to the water bottled after we use them. Some water bottles we use end up in a place where they can burn the bottles , many of them just end up in the Bronx River. Both ways are harming the environment because burning the bottled water causes many ashes and chemicals to fly in the air which can cause pollution. Water bottled that end up in the ocean can affect the animals that live there and can later on affect us humans because if the fishes that are there are being killed their population are gonna start to decrease and it can harm us because humans eat a lot of fish. Going to the Bronx River help me really see how us not recycling can affect us in the future.

On Thursday we looked at two short readings that talked about recycling and how it has decreased. In 1995 the amount of people recycling was 27.9%. Through out the year it was decreasing by 0.29. By 2012 it is expected to be 22.9% of people recycling. This is important to know because not many people are aware of how they are affecting our environment, it may be not be decreasing as much now but for the future it can be a very big deal if people do not protect our environment. The other reading we did was how many plastic bottles are not being recycled. In 1991 it was 3060 billion not being recycled and in 2010 it was about 7.7 billion bottles not being recycled. As the years go by its going to keep increasing. What does that say about us humans? it shows that many do not care or just do not pay mind to it. People should take actions into the situation because it can really affect the world we live in.

  2. What are bottle bills?

Bottle bill's are extra cost put on drinks, for their container, which the customers can get back if the return the bottles to an authorized redemption center,a vending machine or the original seller in some jurisdictions. In some place, such as New York City the water bill is five cent and in other place it's ten cent. The price of the bill is always printed on the bottle.

The bill was created by cooperation before drink container became plastic. Cooperation where trying to save money on the production of glass bottles, by recycling them. Now some believe that the bill is less important for plastic bottles because they are chipper to make.

What are the pros an cons of bottle bills?

Bottle Bills have always been on soft-drink, juice, milk, water, and alcoholic-beverage. Water bottles have been the only exception on the water bill.

This is a problem for the some because people return and recycle soda and juice container, but don't don't do it for water bottles. Leaving plastic water UN-recycled and throw out on the streets. When it rains some bottles are taken down the swear and find their way to the ocean. Leaving some shores fulled with plastic bottles and trash.

    Why are bottle bills important?

Bottle bills are important because they increase the amount of plastic being recycled. In the United Sates eleven States have pass this bill. Although, the bill is created people don't seem to want their money back because they don't believe five vents is worth it, and corporations don't want to increase the bill because it may harm the product's sells. Hence, for this reason the pound of plastic bottles being recycled in the Untied States decreased by 0.24 a year.

What do I think about the bottle bill?

The water bill should be increase for all product because if people really want a drink they would pay anything to drink it. On the same token the bill doesn't have to be that much, it can increase twenty five because if enough bottles are return then people can really make money out of returning the bottles.

Increasing the bill would also provide a way of income for some people who are unemployed by gathering bottles and get profit in return.

  3. This week was by far the most interesting; it had such a relation to me and those around me. One would think that tap water and bottled water would be completely different; that bottled water was best for consumers, but in reality we’ve all been fooled. Beforehand I used to think that bottled water was much cleaner than tap water turn out that’s not the case. When we were introduced to a video that week that’s when I started to find out some things. There was one thing said that caught my attention most, it was said that many of the bottled water we know of are less regulated than tap. At the moment I felt cheated because bottled water gives me less of a benefit than tap water and especially cheated because of the money I wasted on bottled water. I figured I wasn’t alone because in the video the speaker admitted that Americans buy half a billion bottles of water each week resulting of a cost of 2 thousand times more than that of tap water. It’s true; they do seduce us, mislead us and scare us because they force me to think that tap water isn’t as healthy as bottled water. The illustrations on these bottles do so, they have images of where they supposedly receive this water for example: Poland Spring has an illustration of water near trees and grasses: somewhere natural. These bottled waters are not as “natural” as we perceive it to be. One thinks that they are doing themselves good by buying these items but in the end it is doing harm. Bottled waters are ending up in more places than garbage cans; they are ending up in oceans, rivers, and overall places where they should not be in. As we use these bottled waters we destroy the atmosphere around us especially the water we can receive. I think that it’s just an illusion that one is better than the other because it’s not free. I suppose we can do something about it because this same week I saw some students in my math class start to use the sink to drink water. Seemly, when a student asked if she can drink water from the sink the teacher replied it’s not clean but my classmate said we learned tap and bottled water is the same thing, I think that made a change of thought. If we spread the word around soon enough it might be over. In the end one would think that because bottled water costs more that the idea of buying water that you can get for free by tap is not so stupid because that might mean its cleaner, this is just an illusion.

  4. This in week in Environmental Science class we talked about bottle and tap water, how plastic affect many things such as species under the water and us human. At first we had a class discussion deciding which type of water was healthier for us. I thought bottle of water was healthier because we see other people with bottle of water, but watching a video we found out that tap water is much healthier for us and cost less. I learned that before drinking water from a water fountain or anywhere you have to let the water run for at least 30 seconds so all the lead can be let out, and the water would be clean. I’m not sure what day of the week but I remember talking about bottle bill, bottle bill are extra cost, which means each customer can receive 5 or 10 cents when they return the bottle back. I also learned that by many of us not recycling bottles and throwing them anywhere even the ocean it can harm the species in the water. These animals eat the plastic which is bad for them, while they get harm we also are getting harm because when we eat seafood most of those animals have plastic inside of them. I think that there are many ways we can change this for our own good and even to have a clean/ healthy environment, we can all recycle and let others know how tap water is much better than bottle of water. The way this can affect the community, family, and friends is by not telling them that what they eat can be harmful for them and by them not recycling can affect our surroundings. Canoeing was so much fun even though I was a bit scared with the partners I had.

  5. In Environmental Science, We started talking about Bottle of Water, of how it affects our community and the way we our living, we first got a work sheet, in which we had to taste these two different kind of water, the first one was tap water and bottle of water, then we had to figure out which one was which, the tap water had an after taste and the bottle of water tasted regular nothing out of the ordinary, week two we saw a clip of how bottle of water is affecting our community and how is not good to drink and then we did a worksheet about it, also on the other week we saw the same clip but this time we had to answer some question, and we met this guy name Steve in which we went to highbrigde park, were Steve was explaining the different type of sewer and who manages the water, also he talk about his experience and answer our question.

  6. During this week I have learned various things. But what has really has opened my eyes during this week, is how plastic water bottles hurt us as a country and the universe; and how human activities hinder not only our water but also the habitats and species that live there such as the human activities connecting with plastic.

In class we watched a video on how plastic has been damaging our ocean water throughout. I have learned that these containers that we believe is going to be “recycled” only so little ends up being recycled. The rest of these bottles guess where they end up? In our poor fishes diet and mother nature's water. I learned that when they cut up these fishes they contain like 5 or 6 pieces inside their stomachs. I also learned that these plastic bottles are traveling like a cycle between our Indian and Atlantic oceans. I saw how our beaches are being polluted with these plastic bottles, and how the average of plastic in our ocean water has seemingly increased due to the production of bottled water in our ocean water

  7. The plastic is hurting our marine life and one proof of this is according to the video there has been reported more plastic in our ocean water than plankton. Plankton are small living organisms that play a role In our fishes diet. Due to this fact it is obvious to infer that plastic is becoming something like invasive in marine life. This issue seems unresolvable for it is very hard to eliminate plastic that is so spread out in a extremely large ecosystem.

In our trip to the Bronx River which is considered the only real river in NewYork City I have experienced myself seeing many bottles of plastic floating around the edges of the river. I also saw pieces of plastic on the soil around the edges of the river just like the video! I realized that the documentary video was actually all truth, and it is affecting NewYork today. Not only in beaches but in our only river!

This week in Environmental Science, we talked about the usage of water bottles in the United States. We Learned that daily more than millions of Bottled of Waters go to waste. The class and I did a work sheet showing the pounds and percent of recycled bottle of water throughout 1990-2010 and 1995-2013. I also learned that most garbage and water bottles end up in the ocean. When the waste ends up in the ocean, it interferes with animal’s habitat. I believe all states should have bottle bills. Bottle bills are when someone returns bottles of water; they receive money for each bottle. If Bottle Bills were to be passed to every state and was a serious matter, then recycling bottles will increase. There also would be less bottled water floating in the ocean. If money is offered to individuals to recycle, then there is a possibility the Bill would be very effective. I always see people collecting plastic bottles and glass bottles. They Take the bottles to machines and then receive money after. The Bottle Bills help people financially and helps and protects Earth.
On Wednesday, the whole 12th grade went on a visit to the Bronx River. I never visited the Bronx River, and the first thing I notice was the Vandalizing on walls near the river. I start thinking how at one time in history, the river was very polluted. I also realized that protecting the Bronx River is a very serious and it looked like a nice park. The Bronx River also had a blockage that prevented trash to flow down to the river then to the ocean. When I went canoeing for the first time, I realized how nice the Bronx River was fixed; however, there was some trash in the River. I expected the River to be very dirty. However, when my group was water testing, we discovered the river was not so bad to drink. The trip influenced me to want to fix up the river as well. I remember the artist, who got to speak to some students, say, “When you’re walking out please help fix the river by picking up garbage on your way out”. Before we left the Bronx River, I started picking up any garbage that was on the floor.

  9. This week in Environmental Science we learned that Tap water is better than Bottle water. We had two test two different kind of water and figure out which one was bottle water and tap water. The tap water had a bad taste and the bottle water taste normal. We also learned that the bottle of water is not good for us because of the plastic it leads out chemical that affects us.We watched a video in class that taugh me that tap water its healthier and doesnt damage us, because thats what they use in Restaurant.Learned that we could drink the water from the sink, but before we do that we have to let it run for at least 30 seconds.
Then we saw a video about Bottle bill, that offers a deposit of 5 or 10 cents to return the botttle that were used. But only 11 states offered the bottle bill. Sometime people dont recycle the bottle water and it ends up in the river like the ones in the bronx river. Which affects the species living their.
This is affecting everyone in the community because they dont recycle the things they buy. They just throw it in the street like if someone is supposed to be picking after themself. They dont think the damage they are doing to the species and to themself. When they throw the plastic bottle the species eat it which then affects people because they eat the species.

  10. Stormy weather, calming wind, and a whole lot of canoes. On Wednesday, our classes had the joy of working together and cannoning, while also learning about the Bronx River in a first hand perspective. At first I was terrified that my canoe might flip over at anytime, and then become mutated from the dirty waters that saw in the video in class. But once I actually got there and experienced it my idea of the Bronx River changed completely. I quickly learned that the Bronx River was the only true river in New York City, I found that surprising and thought the Hudson River was deceiving me. This is because the Bronx River is the only water source that has fresh water in a large part of it, but at one point it mixes with the ocean making it an estuary. As I was on the canoe, I noticed that the Bronx River water wasn’t as dirty as I thought, I could actually see through the water. The water conditions were not impediments but motivators that pushed us to work harder as a team.

Moreover, we also learned about projects helping maintain and restore the water in Bronx River. As the instructor Damien mentioned that just last week he and a group of high school students placed clams in the water. There was also another project that involved an ecologist artist whom saw how corporations affected the Bronx River and found a solution. When it rains the runoff from the dirty parking lot at ABC carpets, goes straight in the fresh water in the Bronx River. This artist made a garden covered with a net to observe the water before it reached the river and then created a walk way completely made at out recycled water bottles.

This made me think about what we have been learning in class about the crisis with a lot of water bottles going to waste. Ending up in landfills in India, and other countries. While every year, since we the production of water bottles has increased the less Americans are recycling. This means that our generation if we don’t soon start seeing the problem and finding solutions as the artist by the Bronx River did, our world not only our country will be in large danger.

  11. Last week in the in Environmental science class we learn a lot about water. We learned how clean is the water, what water we need to use, what things can the community do to maintain our water clean and safe to drink. We watched a video that some rivers had so many plastic and dirt inside, that maybe the sea food that we eat might have that. Because they found so many plastic inside a fish, that's why people need to be careful what they buy especially sea food since the sea, water is very polluted with plastic and dirt all around. I also learned that in New York we waste billions and billions on plastic water , and all that plastic bottle goes to landfills and river since we don't recycle that much. This really affecting our earth and affecting us economically. Tap water and bottle water is the same thing, so why waste money on plastic bottle water if we can filter our own in our house and conserve lots of water and save lots of money. In a video that we watched in class it said that if people conserve water in could save lots of like 540 (kwh) of electricity and preserve nature . We did a work that shows what percentage on recycling plastic bottles .In 1995 the amount of people recycling was 27.9%. Through out the year it was decreasing by 0.2. Meaning that we people don't really care about our environment and what might happen to our environment if we keep on polluting it every day with so much garbage and littering. There's even a law that you have to recycle , but people don't really do it. Also there's this thing call Bottle bill where you can deposit you plastic bottle and gt 5 or 10 cents in return . Companies have offered that but people don't really take advantage of that because five cents is not really that much, but i also think they should increase the amount of bottle bill so it will bring people attention and would really return their bottle water and recycle.

There are programs and activity that people are working together to restore the Bronx river. People have been working together, cleaning out all the garbage and introducing some species to the Bronx river, so it will be live again . People introduce some alewife, clams, turtles, so there will be a place where species will be safe and water will be clean for us. Overall i believe people need to set their minds to action and begin doing something about our environment and being in a community from the help of each other . For example to start recycling more, throwing less garbage on the floor, join activities to restore rivers, seas, so in that way we could drink clean and safe water. We need to keep earth safe, because if we don't in what kind planet are we gonna live on? we want our planet safe and clean for everyone.

  12. In this short week we had gone canoeing in the Bronx River. There we had learned many things involving the river and the land around it. On Tuesday we started to research a bit on the Bronx River. Then on Wednesday was the actual canoe trip. When I had gotten in the water with Randy it was actually a bit terrifying since all I kept thinking about was how deep was this water and what would happen if I would have fallen into the water. It didn’t really help that randy kept trying to rock the boat when really he was trying to turn us around. Throughout this time I kept throwing water to randy by mistake since I kept trying to go faster and faster. When we were done canoeing Mr. Fox began testing the water using a water testing kit in where we were learning the ammonia and different types of things that the water could have had. On Thursday I was absent and didn’t get to talk about the things that the class had learned about. But then on Friday I figured out how much gallons of water is wasted throughout the years of 1990-2010

  13. Water Bottles vs. Tap Water
Before learning about water bottles water and tap water, I use to think that the water in water bottles were “cleaner” than tap water. This week, I was proven wrong. The water in the water bottles is the same as the water running through my faucet. Clearly, companies such as Deer park sell Americans water that they already have FREE access to. In other words they are cheating Americans. Although many Americans buy water bottles, a major problem with the use of water bottles is that we Americans don’t recycle. Based on the water bottle activity, I learned that between the years of 1991 and 2010 4.636 billion water bottles were not recycle. From 3.06 billion in 1991 it went up to 7.696 billion in 2010. With the use of water bottles, Americans are being cheated and also causing pollution to nearby rivers such as the Bronx River and Hudson River because they don’t recycle.
I also learned about the bottle bill, and how companies charge a 5-10 cents deposit when consumers buy water bottles. Although the bottle bill purpose was to increase recycling in ways, based on the amount of bottles American recycle, we see that this bill really has no affect in a nation like the United States. I believe this is because we are a complex nation, and don’t have access to recycle bins in highly populated areas as other countries do.
The fact that our water bottles end up in unnecessary places such as rivers is really harming to the species that live in the water such as the alewife, clams and fishes. Learning about the importance of recycling and the truth about water bottles I realized that Americans need to be more aware on where they recycle trash. Since my dad is a super, we do recycle. We usually sell the bottles to a recycling company. I believe every household should do the same and recycle and start drinking tap water rather than buying water bottles.

  14. This week during Environmental Science we learned about how many pounds of plastic bottles are not being recycled and about the Bottle Bill. We did an activity in which Mr. Fox gave us problems to determine how many bottles were not recycled in a year and see the change over time. After we did this activity, I noticed that more water bottles are not being recycled. This is a problem because most of those bottles end up in the sea hurting sea creatures. It is said that there is actually more water bottles in the sea than plankton. This is a big deal because we are putting species more in the risk of becoming extinct. The Bottle Bill was another thing we learned about. The Bottle Bill is about encouraging people to recycle more water bottles by giving them 5 cents per bottle they recycle. This way people would be able to recycle more water bottles than before. My class learned from a video that when there is a 5 cents deposit, the return rate is 70%, while when there is a 10 cents deposit; the return rate is 97%. This means that the more the deposit is, the most likely people are to recycle water bottles.

Even though we have the Bottle Bill in New York City, I still don’t recycle any water bottles. I just think that 5 cents less wouldn’t make me richer or poorer. This is a problem because by not doing this, I am hurting the environment. However, I have decreased the number of water bottles I buy in a week, which is kind of good. If we all have a higher deposit, I believe that most individuals would recycle their water bottles.

  15. This week in environmental science i learned a lot of new important facts and statistics. One thing that really caught my attention is the effects that bottled water has on the environment. I learned an interesting fact like about a million bottled waters go to waste each day. Human activities also have had a harmful effect on this environment such as littering, all the bottles and other waste when dropped on the floor when it rains flows down to sewers which than end up on the river and contaminates the water. These things affect living species in the waters, all the bottles and waste that end up in the water is very harmful not only to us but to the living things in the water because some of the waste that ends up there has harmful chemicals that harms the water and everything in it. In my opinion i believe recycling should become a serious law here in this country because people are not taking this serious and are hurting our environment without noticing. The bottle bill should be made making it a law in each state to recycle. This will start to begin the journey to repairing our environment, rivers, and estuaries. On Wednesday, the whole 12th grade went on a visit to the Bronx River where we learned more about this. I got to canoe bit around the river and noticed that the water is not as dirty as i expected it to be but it could be better.

  16. This week the Environmental Science class was highly educated and dynamic, we visited the Bronx River, learning a little more about the project that is taking place for the restoration of this river, which was the first that supplied water to NYC, and also learning important tips on how to canoe and having the opportunity to canoe on this river.

Since we were in the river we made a little research to determine the levels of abiotic factors through several water samples, such as salinity, phosphate, nitrogen, pH, among others, and the next day in class we compare the levels of those abiotic factors of the Bronx River to the levels suitables for different marine animals such as the oyster, blue cramp, salmon and alewife, and to my surprise 3 of these 4 animals will survive in the Bronx River, which made me realize that although there are still many efforts in order to restore this river is not as insane as I thought, which means that the efforts so far made have been worth it and if we continue making efforts for the cleaning and care of this river earlier than later we will see the goal accomplished.

  17. Last week we learned different kinds of things about water. I learned that many bottles aren't being recycled, and the rate of how many bottles aren't being recycled increases over the years. In my opinion we should tell more people how important our water is, and that tap water is the same water we drink when we buy bottled water. I think the more we buy bottled water the more our planet earth is being affected, because many Americans do not recycle, and if we reuse the bottles for water it can harm us because of the chemicals that are in the plastic. I also believe more people should start volunteering in programs that can help our communities. On Wednesday we went on a canoeing trip, where i saw empty bottles and made me want to come back sometime in the spring so that i help in a way that keeps the bronx river clean before it's too late.

  18. This week we learned mostly about the bottle bill and recycling water bottles. I found out that a lot of the water bottles that are used in New York City that are not recycled end up in ocean, beaches, and rivers. I learned about some of the impacts about dumping water bottles into these bodies of water: fish are able to possibly digest these plastic bottles, it can lead to fish’s death, and that many of the beaches sand are mixture of sand and plastic from the water bottles.

One thing that I did find interesting was that if fish where to digest plastic it could not only affect the fishes but human as well. The reason why it can affect humans is because a lot of people enjoy fishing and also eating it. This means that humans could possibly end up eating fish, which have plastic parts inside of them. I also found interesting seeing people opening fish bodies and seeing the plastic particles inside of them. My question is why regulations aren’t being followed and why aren’t they as strict on littering and polluting the water bodies?

This really hasn’t changes my life towards fish because I don’t really enjoy fish due to the environment that they live in, but it has certainly changed my perspective on littering, I now take littering very seriously. I want to know if there’s people out there who are trying to clean the bodies of water. I am wondering when people are going to start caring about their environment?

  19. This week in Environmental Science, might have just been the most exciting one yet. On Wednesday, Mr.Fox took the 12th grade on a trip to the Bronx River. I for one have never visited the Bronx River so when I was told about it I was as ecstatic as possible. The first thingI noticed is that I have been around the area in which it was located I noticed because I saw a unique piece of graffiti that I have seen in that very spot before. The Bronx River is a very interesting place its been through a lot and is also the only "real" river in New York. The interesting part of the river is all the history that comes with it. The river at one point was very polluted. This all changed when people realized how vital it was to protect and how vital the river was alone. They protected The Bronx River was protected in various ways ,they made blockages in order to stop the trash from getting in the ocean. During the actual canoeing experience we got to see hands on the condition of the river although yes its not up to the best possible conditions it has been really fixed as I took my studies of the river to another level and saw a lot of things I expected a whole lot worse than what I saw.

Later that week we spoke and learned about the use of plastic water bottles in our country. On a normal average more than millions of bottles of water go to waste and aren't recycled they are just thrown into places where they harm our world. We went into deep into studies with worksheets and graphs that included information about the bottles and how much is recycled in the years 1990-2010 and 1995-2013. We also learned about the consequences of having these bottles not being recycled. If we don't recycle them then the plastic will go into oceans than contain our fish that we depend on these fish will eat the plastic. This plastic is harmful for them this makes them sick.If this is still in our fish and we catch them sick then this will harm us as we our eating sick fish. In my opinion I believe that creating Bottle Bills will amend all these problems.Bottle Bills is when you get money for the return of each bottle. The reason in which why people don't recycle is that they don't have direct effects and get nothing directly out of it.If rewards such as money is given to people then more people will tend to recycle as they can make something out of it.Right now no one gets nothing so people will not recycle.

This week in Environmental we went canoeing in The Bronx River. Not only did we go canoeing we also learned about bottle bills. I was surprised I had never even heard of this. A bottle bill is a also known as “container deposit law” this law taxes you when buying the product than if you return the bottle you have used they will pay you 5 cents back. I discovered that a multitude of water bottles used by New York City end up in the ocean because they are not recycled. Many of these bottles don’t only end up in oceans but beaches and rivers as well. I wasn’t aware of this until this week; there are a lot of impacts on inhabitants that live on the waters that the bottles are being dumped. In these bodies of water where the bottles are just being dumped fishes and more creatures are likely to digest the plastic and die. This is very sad that these creatures are dying because they are mistaking the plastic for food. I also learned that these beaches are mixed with sand and the plastic of the water bottles.

Although I felt bad for the fishes when I found out they were dying. I came to realize that this not only would affect the fishes but humans that actually do eat fishes. Humans can buy these fishes that consume the plastic without knowing it in fish markets. It is likely for this to happen because there are a lot of fishes dying from these plastic. So if a human eats the fish that has consumed plastic it could possibly be dangerous. I also thought that it’s interesting that people out there doing documentaries on these types of issue in the hope that there can be a change. This problem should really be fixed if fishes keep dying from plastic in the future there will no longer be different kinds of species of fish. Not littering in bodies of water where there are animals living should be enforced more. Everyone should take action in this trying to prevent plastic from entering bodies of water.

This has changed my perspective because even though I don’t really eat fish I now know that it can affect someone who does eat these fishes. My perspective has also changed because now I am trying to do my best in stopping my family from littering as well as myself. It’s a serious issue and not a lot of people of aware of this. There should be more people caring about the environment because if we don’t take care of it who will? This makes me are people even trying to clean these bodies of water? And if so how are they doing this?

  21. This week in environmental science was a joy because the whole 12 grade got to visit the Bronx River and we did some exciting stuff such as canoeing where people went inside the boat with either 2 or 3 people and also got to ride the boat. The Bronx River to me seems to be cleaner because the reason that The Bronx River was dirty before is because there is a bridge above the Bronx River and while the cars is passing on the bridge oil and other stuff would go in the water and pollute the water. Now the water became cleaner because the ABC foundation is doing things to keep the water from getting dirty such putting putting something white on the floor where the oil goes and then after that their is trees that stops the oil from getting into the water which allows the water to remain clean. This week we also talked about how many bottled of water goes to waste and how humans activities such as littering is causing a negative impact on our environment.

This week was very interesting because I actually got to visit the Bronx River for the first time which was a great experience for me. I saw how the Bronx River improved in the fact that not so long ago the water used to be polluted but now the River is actually kind of clean because of the efforts of the ABC Foundation. This week was also interesting because I noticed that human activities such as littering is causing a negative impact towards our environment because throwing stuff all over the place can cause pollution in our environment. This week was interesting because I never realized how bottled of water was being wasted every day and how plastic is causing harm to our environment.

This change the way I think because now I know that the Bronx River is actually not so bad and This is were people can do fun activities such as canoeing. This change my perspective because now I know that people shouldn't be littering because littering can cause harm to our environment. I also think that people shouldn't be wasting their money on bottled water because our tap water is pretty clean. Some questions I Still have is which state/city has the cleanest tap water? should people limit the money they on bottled water?

  22. this week in class we were able to learn about where our water comes from and the obstacles it faces to get into our homes.our water originally comes from our reservoirs in the catskill mountains.when we are done with our water it goes down through pipes which eventually goes through sewage pipes , which travels lots of miles to reach a treatment plant which cleans our water to be reusable, and this cycle happens over and over. our actions affect the water massively because we tend to liter a lot which can affect our water because when it rains the garbage travels to the sewer which eventually travels into our water.Ways we can help keep our waters clean is by not litering and not drinking so much bottled water because for all the wrong reasons bottled water finds its way into our water and pollutes our drinkable water which can cause unsafe drinking. with unsafe drinking and everybody drinking water it can result in a spread of diseases because we are letting dangerous bacteria into our systems which can harm our body dramatically.

  23. This week we learned about how bottled water affects the ecosystem. In order to understand this concept, we saw a series of videos, read and analyzed articles and packets, and went canoing at the Bronx River.

According to what we acquired from our studies, bottled water is one of the prime causes of the Earth's destruction. Every day, nearly 8 million bottles of water are disposed off globally. Many of these bottles are found in the ocean and wash ashore to our beaches. In fact, in many of our beaches if your were to scoop up a hand of sand, you would realize that what you picked up wasn't sand but fragments of plastic. This is what our beaches of the future would look like if we continue to use bottled water. It is important that we stop using bottled water because the plastic that ends up in the ocean is consumed by sea critters. Many of those sea critters are ones that we eat. That would mean that we are also consuming the toxins and chemicals of plastic. Many of the plastic is also polluting our waters. It won't be long before bottled water companies would start selling bottled plastic.

We also learned about a legislation called the Bottle Bill. This bill ensures that consumers pay a deposit whenever purchasing a bottle. When the consumers return the bottle, they will get their deposit back. Personally I think this is a great idea. I think that by paying a deposit, people will be slightly encouraged to recycle. Some states have already passed this bill and its been said that an average of 97% of consumers give back the bottle in order to recieve their deposit. Imagine what that would be like if it were nationwide? It would save a lot of plastic from being wasted and would save the Earth from walking the path of destruction.

  24. People go to the store all the time to buy bottled water, they drink it and don’t bother to make the effort to recycle the plastic bottles or return it to the store. When people choose not to return these plastic bottles the water companies have to produce more in order to keep their businesses running. What people are not realizing is the harm the increase of plastic bottles on Earth is doing to the environment. Because people don’t recycle and dispose the plastic bottles in the streets, these plastic bottles are ending up at the Pacific Ocean. To some it may not matter, however they are not understanding that to certain organisms living in the Ocean, eating these plastics can be deadly.

Some people are not aware that some states have bottle bills. In the United States 11 states have bottle bills. This means that when you buy a bottled water you are leaving a 5 or 10 cents deposit depending on the state, at the store and can get the money back really easily by just returning the bottle. Of those 11 states the states with a bottle bill of 5 cents have a 70% return rate compare to the states with a higher bottle bill of 10 cents which have a 97% return rate. To me I don’t think it should even be about the amount of money people get back, people should just return the bottles or recycle them to help the environment for future generations.

Is easy to just blame anybody for how this situation has been managed, but instead people should be coming up with ideas of how to alter the process of plastic bottles if not is going to be a nonstop cycle that will never improve. Is not the store clerk’s responsibility to inform people about the deposit they are leaving when buying bottled water, is the water companies. If the water companies don’t take the initiative to let people know, they should know they are wasting a vast of money yearly by producing more plastic bottles. Not only are they losing money like that but the company is also responsible for paying the stores for the plastic bottles deposit regardless of whether people are returning their plastic bottles or not.

I find it silly that is been about 2 decades that bottled water is been produce and nobody is doing anything about it. I still don’t see why people would need to buy bottled water when they have free water at home, but if they have to they should at least know about recycling and bottle bills before buying them.

  25. This week Environmental Science class was really short, but we got to go canoeing, and had an amazing time. To me this was an exciting activity to be part of. Not only did we canoe, and learn many things about the river and its community, but we also got to test the water in the Bronx River. One of the questions we discussed was how clean do you think the Bronx River water is? My response to this question was that I believe the river water is really dirty, especially since there are buildings, and areas that are highly polluted surround it. I found this topic to be interesting, because I finally realized how clean the Bronx River really is.

In class we learned a lot about the Bronx River, and how it is an estuary. What I still wanted to know is how clean the river really was. So, when we went to visit the Bronx River we took time to actually make some water tests. The results of the tests were adequate. It had a temperature of 18%, salinity of 14 ppt, turbidity of 0, dissolved oxygen of 4 ppm, and a pH of 8. When we went over these results in class, it showed how the Bronx River is a really good habitat for the species living inside it. Therefore it’s a good place for survival, and a safe habitat.

This activity changed the way I thought of the Bronx River. I always thought of it as highly polluted, and a place where any living species would not be able to survive in, but I was wrong this river is clean. I believe that other rivers can be as safe as the Bronx River, but people need to take time, and find solutions just like other individuals made a difference in the Bronx River. I still wonder how long did it take people/ the community to make the river as safe as it is now. Testing the Bronx River was a great experience that had an impact on me. Now I believe that you can’t judge a book by its cover. In other words though the river seemed to be polluted and unsafe, it was really not, so therefore we were proven to be wrong.

this week in environmental science we talked about the water bill and how tap water is better than plastic water bottle. We learn that many plastic water bottle are not been recycle that is affecting our environment since some of the plastic water bottle are not been recycle that then end up been thrown into the ocean. In the reading The Great Pacific Garbage Patch talks about how of the plastic water bottle are ending in the ocean that is hurting many species in the ocean because some of the fishes are eating all this pieces of plastic that are in the ocean. In many ways this could hurt us because some of the fishes that we eat maybe have some plastic in eat that could hurt us and maybe kill us.

This week we also learned about the bottle bill that is when companies charge people 5 cents for each platic water bottle that a person buys. Many companies in the United States dont have this bottle bill because they are scared that people wont buy their product if they charged people so they decided that to have this bill that their custumer could buy their products. In my opinion this is wrong because if companies charge people they would start recycling since they are paying for their product, So I think that every state should have the bottle bill that way more water bottle could be recycle and not end up in the ocean that could harm many species and individuals.

  27. This week during Environmental Science class we talked about how plastic water bottles hurt the environment. In class we watched a video on how plastic bottles have been ending up in the ocean. This affects nature because the species that live in the ocean end up consuming the plastic. In the video it also showed how the beaches are being polluted with the plastic bottles. This matters because plastic in the ocean has increased over the years.

I also learned that New York City is one of the few States that have the bottle bill. This is important because we are able to recycle plastic bottle, but the problem is that a lot of people who buy plastic bottles and who pay five cents extra do not return/recycle the bottle. This is important because people then throw these bottles in the streets and then it end up in the ocean. I think that maybe if we had plastic recycling bins in more places like in Washington Heights more people would start to recycle their plastic bottles. In my building for example I have different recycling bins. There is one for plastics, another for card boards, and another one for everything else. This helps me recycle much easier as supposed to if I didn’t have the different recycling bins. It also helps the environment because less plastic bottles are made, by recycling.

This topic is very important to me because it shows me that its important to become educated. In the world people need to learn about topics such as this, so they could understand why things are the way they are and how they can contribute to make a change. When people are not educated about recycling plastic bottles they are not aware of the affects around them.

If people start recycling alot of energy could be save because if people recycle 2142154000 kilowatt hours could be save. Another thing is that if we recycle 2.54 million gallons of oil could be save, also 2745400 of landfill could be unfilled. Therefore the economy could be better because more money could be saved.

  29. One of the lessons from this week was where does bottles end up when it's not recycled or thrown in the garbage and it's impact it has on the environment. When bottles are not recycled or thrown in the garbage they enter the ocean and river because of the rain, it's washed down. The bottles are then washed into the shore and it accumulates making a layer of plastic instead of sand. The bottles that don't make it to the shore accumulate in the ocean and travels to the Pacific Garbage Patch. The Pacific Garbage Patch is an accumulation of plastic and garbage that travel around the ocean, it's the size of the Texas. Once plastic and garbage enter the garbage patch it never comes out.

Plastic and the Garbage Patch affect the organisms that live in the ocean, especially the fishes. They're are consuming an excessive amount of plastic scraps. This relates to me and my community because we eat fish and other marine life. If the fish and other marine life continue to consume plastic scraps they would no longer be safe to eat. And, other marine life consumers that eat fish and other marine life will not be aware of they are eating. We [humans and other consumers] would be eating more plastic than fish and it could impact their [other marine life consumers] extinction.

  30. This week in environmental science we went canoeing in the Bronx River. Going to the river to canoe was not easy because of the bad weather, but it was actually quite fun. When we got to the Bronx River, we met three people, and they teach us some history about the river. I learned that the Bronx River is the only real river in New York City. Also, many people from the community have come to visit and go on to canoe as well. After learning some history about the Bronx River, we received instruction on how to petal and the way to get into the canoe in order to keep our self safe. The next day we wrote a reflection on the experience we got from the trip. Finally, we conclude the week by talking about bottle bill. I learned that a bottle bill is also known as "container deposit law" this means you get tax when buying a product. However, when finish using the bottle, if you return it you get 5 cents back. Furthermore, we did a warm up on why the number of plastic bottles not being recycled in the U.S have been on the rise, and how can bottle bill make a large difference.

This week was very interesting because of the stuff we were able to do. Before canoeing, we had a bucket, and we fill it up with water. We then took our science materials and test the water for stability. We test for PH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and how basic or acidic the water was.

This has change my perspective because when people are causing pollution, they are hurting the animals that's in the water. In order to stop pollution, they had something in the water to keep the trash from coming in. I learned that people do not have to drop things in the water to cause pollution. People can cause pollution by dropping trash in the floor, and when it rains, the wind then carried these trash into river. This shows people need to stop causing pollution and instead keep the environment safe.

  32. This week in Environmental Science class we had a school trip to the Bronx River. When I found out the trip was to the Bronx River I was very interested since I live just a few minutes away from the River. At the arrival of the trip we met 3 workers who instructed us about the river and canoeing. The Bronx River is consider the only "real" river of NYC.

What I found the most interesting in The trip was What ABC Carpet & Home is doing. This is really exceptional because it shows their appreciation towards the river, they are contributing towards restoration of the river. A second thing I found really interesting was that the Bronx River has very clean water. The water turbidity was amazing, even though the Bronx River water seems dirty and unsanitary when in reality is clear and pure.

Things I wonder about the Bronx river are the amount of gallons the river holds, also if when it rains the water gets dirtier, How can I get involved in preserving the river and How can me and my school start a restoration project.

  33. This week in Environmental Science I learned that during the years 1995 up until 2010, there were more than 3 billions of bottles of water being recycled. I did not think that this much water can be recycled throughout all of these years. One information that I found very intriguing was the results of having bottles of water in the ocean. One of the information that affects living organisms in the water was that plastic is able to poison any fish and it also increases bio threats. Some of the results that my class was able to come up with was to use reusable water bottles and to clean the beach in order to decrease pollution throughout the area. At first I thought bottle of water was healthier because we see other individuals with a bottle of water, but watching a video a few days ago, we found out that tap water is much healthier for us and cost less. One fact that I found unexpected was that if an individual managed to buy a bottle of water which costs $1.00, that individual can return the bottle but only gets 5 cents. Now I wonder is there any possible way to prevent everyone from buying bottles of water to not only waste a bit of money but save world pollution

  34. This week we were fortunate enough to canoe on the Bronx River. At first I wasn't looking forward to it because what I actually wanted to do was ride a bike but I think the guy in charge of that went somewhere else for that day. With that said, I was going to skip the canoe and watch everyone else have fun. Since I've canoed before I just felt like it wasn't going to be a new experience and I wasn't going to learn anything. I was wrong.

After thinking about it, I decided to canoe after all. My canoe partner was Wyndi Rodriguez. When we got on the canoe, we automatically saw that it was going to be difficult due to the wind and light rain. Wyndi and I were struggling at first but then our "canoe teacher" Damien, taught us how to paddle so that we were able to turn and go straight. Even though I've canoed before, I wasn't a master at it. Damien also told us that the Bronx River is the only true river in New York. Another thing that he mentioned, that I thought was very interesting was that he and other students from another school put clams in the river so that they can be re-introduced to the river once again. I felt that it was great that people actually try to help the river.

Overall, the trip was great. I had fun along with the rest of my classmates and I would love to go to another canoe trip as a class again.

  35. This week in envrionmental science, we took a trip to the Bronx River. We went canoeing which was really excitingJ.osue and Andre gave us some tips on how not to tip over. We tested water, to find out if the water was safe enough. Most passed the safety line. Overall the water is safe but can improve.

This week i learned that not recycling plastic bottles can hurt certain types of species. The plastic bottles ends up in the ocean which affect us because the pieces of plastic ends up in the fishes bodies and then we eat the fish with all the plastic inside them. We can't prevent this from happening though. One way we can prevent this is by recycling plastic bottles.

  36. This week in class we learned mostly about a bottle bill that’s on plastic bottles on some of the states in the United States. The bottle bill is a tax that is put on bottles installed by the companies that distribute them and when the bottle is empty there are places where you can hand them in and get a small percentage of the money that it was paid for back. This bill is only in effect in 11 states but the amount that is given back for turning in the bottle is only 5 cents and those states have a 70% return rate and in Michigan the amount that is given back is 10 cents they have a 97% return rate. The problem about this bill is that a lot of people don’t like it that they have to pay extra for their bottles so a lot of companies try to take it away in order to make more money. This is bad because some people actually collect bottles on the streets and turned them in for a profit but if this bill is taken away then there will be even more pollution on the planet since nobody has a reason to collect them. The worst part about the bill is that only 6 states include water bottles and that’s a problem because water bottles are a major contributor to the pollution. A bottle bill can make the difference between people recycling and people not recycling.
In class we also looked at information and graphed it on graph was based on pounds of plastic bottles not recycled in billions and percent of PET bottles recycled. We graphed the information and saw an up rise in the amount of bottles not recycled since 1991 to an estimate to 2012 and the results for bottles recycled decreased from 1995 to an estimate on 2012. I believe these to graphs are related because of the increase in bottles not recycled made the recycled graph plummet. The worse that these numbers get the worse that it will be for our own world, because the more we trash it the worse it gets and soon there will be a point where there is more polluted water than there is clean. Maybe then we as a species will understand the blessing that we have of clean water will know what we’ve had until it’s all gone.

  37. This week was a n adventurous one sort of speak. On Wednesday we went on trip to the Bronx River. We had the pleasure of canoeing on the Bronx River. I believed that the River was really dirty so I wasn't sure if I wanted to go canoeing. Mostly because I didn't want to somehow fall in and end up swimming in the dirty disgusting water. But my mind changed quickly during the trip. We learned new facts about the river and other things that involve it.

During the trip we learned that the Bronx River is the only true river in New York, meaning that it has a combination of salt and fresh water. This means that the river is also an estuary. When I got on the canoe I notice that the water was clear meaning that there wasn't that much turbidity. We also learned about an eco-artist. This eco-artist made art that helped catch runoff from a nearby parking lot, preventing it from getting into the river. After some water testing we found out that the pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen levels are in great condition. This meant that the water wasn't as polluted as I thought it was. While canoeing we also learned about a barrier that's in the river. This barrier prevents trash from the city to go to the ocean. We learned that trash that's blocked from the barrier mostly comes from the city's sewage system. This made me think a little bit about how our city does with littering.

Seeing the litter in the river and learning that it all comes from our sewage system made me think about the way we get rid of our garbage. Usually when there's garbage on the street the street sweepers come and clean up the streets. The problem is that the street sweepers puts all that garbage into the sewage system and ends up in the river. If citizens were more civilized and put there garbage in their proper places we wouldn't have to worry about pollution as much. This made me want to be more careful about where I throw my trash at and make sure it doesn't go on the streets.

  38. This week in Environmental Science we learned about how bottled water contributes to the damage on our ecosystems. We mostly learned more about this topic through a video and articles.

Bottled water is one of the main things that is harming Earth. There are millions of water bottles disposed of every day. These plastic bottles are not being recycled and they are just ending up in landfills. These water bottles also end up in our beaches and our oceans. In the video, a guy scooped up a handful of sand and really it was all particles of plastic. These are going to be the beaches of the future. Not only is this affecting us but it is affecting the marine life. The percent of consumed plastic in marine life has increased rapidly.

Some legislation like the bottle bill has been put in place to try to increase the number of plastic bottles recycled. Basically for every bottle people take back to the seller they get 5 or 10 cents. I think this is a good idea because the more we recycle the less water bottles there is in our oceans.

  39. This week in Environmental Science my classmates and I learned about numerous things we can do to help our ecosystem. We also learned about the horrid things that are caused due to the water bottles not getting recycled and thrown all over the Earth. During class We watched a series of videos that activated schema, and gave us an idea of the process or/and life cycle of an ordinary water bottle.

Our main problem here i believe, is the fact that these water bottles aren't getting recycled. These water bottles end up in local rivers, then washed up into the oceans; where from there can end up anywhere around the world harming marine life. We need to do something fast.

One solution to this problem can be the "bottle bill" This bill would increase the amount that people pay for beverages that come in plastic (mainly water). Although many C.E.O would disagree, because it would cut their profit and number sold; I believe it would contribute to getting these plastic bottles recycled.

With recycled water bottles we will re-use the same bottles, after being sterilize which will still be safe to drink from. All these good ideas can lead to a better future, better beaches, and a better life.

    SO PLEASE....RE-use, RE-duce, and Re-cycle!!

  40. This week we read an article about the Eastern and Western garbage patches. When you throw garbage on the streets it washes up on shore and runs off into the ocean. This garbage ends up in the North pacific gyre and accumulates in the Eastern and Western garbaf=ge patches. The animals suffer from this. Birds confuse garbage with food and die. Fish swallow some plastic and then we eat the fish that eat the plastic. There has been bottle bills that try to modify this water bottle cause by returning a bottle to the store after empty to be refilled that way it does not end up inside animals. Also the sand is being contaminated and this plastic in the water continues to increasingly affect our marine life.

If we were to properly recycle daily then this water bottle issue would be less of an affect in our environment. The animals would not frequently die and disrupt equilibrium. If water bottles were not sold as much then our beach sand would not be full of plastic and we will be able to enjoy our beaches. Bottled water is simply just tap water that we can et for free so why ruin our environment on something that is not necessary. Our environment would be much healthier and enjoyable if we would not contaminate it with plastic from water bottles ruining our beaches.

In my house i would continue to recycle and encourage the most people to recycle as well in order to save marine life. We should all do our best to recycle inorder to save our beaches and enjoy them the way they should be enjoyed instead of turning them into a dump.

  41. This week we learned about what happens to the plastic water bottles after its been dumped in the trash, and the bottle bill.

The plastic water bottles that are dumped in the trash end up in the pacific ocean in gyres filled with plastic waste. This is harming the ecosystem in the ocean because it is polluting it with abiotic factors. The biotic factors living in the ocean are being harmed as well. Many fishes have been found with plastic inside of them. This shows that there is a great amount of plastic waste in the ocean that many fishes have tried eating it causing harm to them and us who consume the fish.

The Bottle bill is a tax that is taken from those who buy bottled products. However, the consumers who buy the bottled product could return the bottle after its been used and can receive five cents per every bottle returned. This would help increase the amount of recycled bottles in the United States because many people would want to make money out of the bottles that they would just randomly throw away. I believe that the bottle bill should increase because it will increase the percentage of people that would return bottles knowing that they'll get more money doing so. This could apply more jobs for people because it will motivate them to recycle their bottled products.

This week we started learning about water bottle and how they have been polluting our seas and beaches. We learned how water bottles and other garbage are being found in large quantities in our seas and beaches due to people being careless and not recycling. Due to the garbage growing in past years the water currents have been moving them around in circles creating Great Pacific Garbage Patch. All this garbage has been polluting the the ecosystem and hurting the fishes due to chemicals from water bottles and the fishes eating them. I found this really interesting because I knew were gonna go to the Bronx river and it made me want to see if in the river the same problem was happening.

In our trip to the Bronx river I had the chance to see the water first hand while being in the canoe. While in the canoe I saw some plastic water bottle and garbage on the sides. This made me think if this was harming the water and the fishes that live in it. After canoeing we learned that they are trying to stop this from happening we found out that there is a eco-artist who is creating a garden so that it can catch the run off of garbage and chemicals from cars when it rains so that it wont get in to the river. This made me change the way I think about garbage and how you can't just throw it in the ground or just in trash. This made me want to recycle more. After coming back from the trip we learned about ways some states has been trying to reduce the number of water bottles in the sea and increase recycling. We learned about the bottle bill which means you pay for the bottle but if you give it back you get the money for the bottle back. We learned that this has helped increase recycling.

The bottle bill has made me think about how there would be less trash and more recycling if all the states would use it. I think we should do more things to help such as add new trash cans the have recycling which Mr. Fox said he has seen out of the country. Also we should raise the price of how much money you get back from returning the bottles because I think this would encourage more people to bring them back. I think people in world should pay attention to what their trash are doing because I don't want to lose our beaches and sea.

  43. Feeling scared, anxious, happy, and all different types of emotions. That’s what I felt right before going canoeing. During this week of class we got the wonderfull oppourtunity to go canoeing in the Bronx River. The only true river NYC has, remember the Hudson River is an Estuary. I was extremely scared of going canoeing because I had never done it before. Except for a small boat ride thingy around central park which cold never compare to the Bronx River. There where two groups and I was happy o be in group 2. I was not going to be the first to embares my self thought. And it also gave me the chance to see how and what we where able to do. It was an extremely windy and cold day which meant the current was going fast I did not want to be the one to be flown in to the river, I was thinking but the instructer new what they were doing and how to keep us safe. As soon as any of us got to the place where we were not suppose to be they quickly help us out. My paddle fell inside the river and I was so scared, but one of the guys was so kind to give it to me.
Not only did we canoe but we also tested the water for some very important abiotic factors. Such as Temperture and turbity and much more. We the traced it back to an activity we did in class about certain animals and we matched them up to see if they can survive in the Bronx river. And guess what THEY CAN! I was so excited to hear this because it meant that all the hard work that had been put in to the River is being seen. You can clearly see a differnce.

  44. This week the environmental science class was discussing on where and what happens to the water bottles. After the bottle water are consumed by the customers they are only used for a few minutes. After the bottles are thrown away, only a low percent of water bottles are recycled. The other percent of water bottles are shipped to India and are dumb into people's backyard. Some water bottles are dumb or stored in the back of people's property and some are incinerated. In a video that the class was reviewing there are many water bottles floating and dumped into the ocean and that can also affect the animals that swim around the trash. Also the was a research that showed that some glass were discover in the animals/creatures that lived in that habitat.

  45. This week in environmental science we went on a trip to the Bronx River. We were able to take a look at the river and go canoeing. While at the concrete park I observes bottles of water laying near the edges of the river and i began to ask myself why people would do that. The Bronx river has been through so much and for people to keep polluting after the long way its come doesn't make sense.

We read two articles "The Pacific Garbage Patch" and "The Public Trough" the information i became aware of in these two article were some what amazing and unbelievable. One of the articles stated "I started a poll: do you know where your tap water comes from? . . . Those who even knew how many miles the arugula on their plate had traveled, had no idea." This is amazing to me, how can people not be aware of where what they are drinking comes from? Are they not concerned about their health? This made me reconsider the types of resources I get my water resources from, I now drink more water from my tap and buy less water at the grocery store. In the other article I learned there are two major garbage patches, the Eastern garbage patch and the Western garbage patch. These are currents which swirls around and around where trash and debris is found. Things like plastic bags, lighters, bottles and fish nets can be found in these patches. If you take a moment to think like i did you start to notice that some of this garbage might be the gum wrapper you threw onto the side walk or the plastic bag that flew out of your hands because of the wind, or maybe even the water bottle you left at the park.
"In the North Pacific Gyre, pieces of plastic outweigh surface zoo plankton by 6 to 1." This is due to human actions, things like this go unseen by us and we never think about them and what our negative actions do to our surroundings. Lets all be mindful of the things we do that might hurt the environment in which we live in and depend on and make a difference for the better.

  46. This week in class, we went canoeing in the Bronx River. It was really fun. I found the precautions that the AB&C Carpet (a company right next to the river) along with the Bronx River Alliance, an environmental artist and some high school kids took to keep pollution, car oil, etc out of the water. They built a artificial swamp right in between the company and the river. The swamp is made up some plants with a big net on top of it. This net catches all the garbage, prohibiting it from going into the water and polluting it. I went canoeing twice, the first time with Roy Gil and Walter Suazo and the second time with Raphael Ballenilla and Krystal Acevedo. I had fun both times, especially the first time since all I had to do was sit in the middle and make sure the canoe stayed balanced. Although, I kept getting splashed with water, but it wasn't salty. And the water was clean, not murky at all. That really surprised me because when I see the Hudson River, all I see is brown water. That's probably not healthy at all.

  47. This week in Environmental Science we learned about the importance of water bottles, we also went canoeing in The Bronx River. We learned about bottle bills. A bottle bill is a also known as “container deposit law” this law taxes you when buying the product than if you return the bottle you have used they will pay you 5 cents back. I discovered that most of the water bottles used by New York City ends up in the ocean because they are not recycled. This does not benefit us because all these water bottles being thrown in the water is polluting our environment. Many of these bottles end up in oceans, beaches and rivers. This does not benefit us because, all this waste of water bottles can is causing damage to the rivers and where ever it lands. The waste on water bottle can be wasted on other things, water on the go is a good easy way out. But people aren't aware of the chemicals and disadvantages there is in a bottled water.

This made me realize that the importance of water plays a big role in human society because being able to recycle makes the world a better place and being able to be aware of the damage that is being created worldwide, is an enormous step. We should take action and we should recycle. Go green!

  48. This week in Environmental science we learned about bottle water and how it contaminates our environment. An interesting fact that surprised was that bottle water was less regulated than regular tap water. I use to think that tap water was bad for your health since the pipes in NYC was old, but i thought wrong. Learning about water bottles gave me an inside look of what water bottles can do if they are thrown into the sea and where they get shipped. The bottle bill was passed in some states in order to regulate the use of water and decrease the waste of water bottles. The water bottle bill works when a person purchases the bottle and if they return it they get a certain amount back. This is proven to work because more people will return water bottles to receive money back.

  49. This week of Environmental science we discussed the differences and similarities of bottle water and tap water from the facet in our homes. I was amazed of the reality and how bottled water companies use tap water to make their products, water bottle companies claim that their water is all natural so that the people think their getting something better then what they have at home. the fact is that bottle water and tap water are the same, tap water is just as healthy and un harmful as bottled water , but tap water is in your homes ,you don’t have to pay to drink that water in your home so why spend your money ? bottled water company’s are selfish they just want the peoples money and don’t care what they have to do to get it. When people finish drinking their water they often toss the bottle in the ground and when it rains the bottles move in and pollute rivers. This leads to our animals in our rivers getting killed and the water becoming so polluted that our animals can no longer manage in that water. Point is that if you drink it from your home faucet you can play an important role in helping reduce pollution in your community.
Tap water is the solution to pollution!

  50. You can’t imagine how my life has changed because of this week. This we learned about how we use water bottled water and how its plastic contaminates our environment. Something that impacted me was learning that most of our plastic bottles are sent to India and remain their idle till this day. I think the United States and its water corporations shouldn’t do this because it us that is producing this product not them. We also learned that tap water is as fresh as bottled water. Companies such as Polar Springs, Aquafina, Desani, and Fiji use appealing words and pictures in their commercial in order for us to appeal to them and buy their products. This has impacted my life because now I’m contributing to the environment by making it cleaner and drinking tap water. Another thing that I found interesting was the water bill. This bill was passed in some states in order to regulate the amount of water bottles that are wasted and recycled. This works because you actually get money back when you return a used water bottled in which you’ve purchased at sometime.

  51. This week in Environmental Science Mr. Fox took the class on a trip canoeing .Even though that I didn’t go canoeing I heard it was an awesome trip and students got to learn a lot about Bottle water not being recycle and ending up in the rivers. This pollutes the river and affects also animal’s that are living in the water. Drinking from bottles has increase trough the year which this means that pollution has increase more not only sewage but also pollution because of no recycle. The amount of people that recycle in the 1990 was 27% and as the year pass by it has decrease 22% of people have been recycling in the whole world. The same week we did a project on weather drinking tap water or bottle water we had to gather information about why tap water benefits us more than bottle water. Tap water benefits more than bottle because bottle water make you waste more money and the prices are increasing throughout the year and the more that you leave a water bottle sitting around the more the chemical from the bottle leach into the water which affect our health. Tap water doesn’t affect our health and it also free it’s in our home and is water that has been sanitizes and doesn’t affect our health.

  52. This week in environmental studies it was a very exciting week for our class. We learned lots about the levels of abiotic factors and the level that these factors need to be in order for certain marine wildlife to be able to live in their water. It was also an exciting week because our class was finally going to go on the trip that we have long-awaited and that was postponed earlier in the year. Unfortunately for me, i was not able to make it to the trip for personal reasons. Looking back at it now, I can say that I regret not going because when I signed on Facebook, I saw many of the pictures that the kids in my class uploaded from the trip and it could have been a fun new experience. Not only, that but it could have also been a great way to learn about the abiotic factors in the Bronx River and see if it has improved from its history.
