Seniors.
Remember that connecting what we have learned to your own life is an essential party of your post.
Think about how what we are learning has changed your thinking about an issue, why you found it interesting, how it relates to your life...
Mr. Fox
During this week we had started off by doing a mini reflection on what we have learned and if our ideas had changed overtime. What I had learned about bottled water and tap water is that bottled water companies are misleading consumers. They say our water is from mountains when it's actually from municipals tap reservoirs.
ReplyDeleteThen we had started learning about hydro-fracking for natural gas. Natural gas is fuel that is used for heating, and cooking that is primarily methane that burns cleaner and is brighter than coal, and oil. Natural gas comes from living things that had died 200 million years ago, that were covered by mud, sand, and silt. The pressure from covering had turned the dead stuff into fossils and then hence fossil fuel, which is found around southern western New York. Marcellus shale contains 489 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, but it is not yet known how much gas will be recoverable. This gas obtainable through these seven steps:
1) Drill through the water table
2) Seal water table
3) Drill into shale horizontally
4) Fracture shale by using water
5) Water is removed
6) Gas starts to flow
Hydro-fracking will be interesting to the world because it's a drilling for natural gas, and it's less money and probably there won’t be another accident like the present gulf coast oil spill. But also the benefits for people and communities are that it will employ more than 4,500 people. Oil, gas and solution salt mining contributes more than $500 million to the state economy each year. In 2008, oil and gas development resulted in state tax revenue totaling $3.1 million and estimated $14.6 million in local government tax revenue and $61 million in landowner royalty payments.
Only 5 percent of New York's natural gas is produced in-state while 95-percent is imported. Also New York uses 1.2 trillion cubic of natural gas per year. In addition, New York is the fourth largest U.S. consumer of natural gas.
Finally America had increased the use of natural gas could reduce the use trade deficit by $25 billion per month. 30% of the natural gas being produced is used to generate electricity. But also natural gas 43% lower emissions than coal and 30% lower emissions than oil.
This week in my environmental science class we learned about Natural gas. Natural gas is found underground on the southeast and northeast. Natural gas is the gas that we use for cooking and heating. Natural gas was discover in 1821, about 75,000 of oil and gas has been drilled. Hydrofracking is the process where natural gas is formed with mud, sand, and silt . Is transformed into pressure fossils fuels then finally transform to gas and goes up to earth surface.
ReplyDeleteGenerally, what i found most interesting about the facts of natural gas. Is the part of the process of how natural gas is formed. Not only that, i also liked that natural gas is proven that is healthier, less pollutant, more safety and produces energy. Is even less expensive than gasoline. Therefore, there are industries that work for oil and natural gas association that have employed more than 45,000 of people in NY that are in need of a job. Industries even contribute to the economy and helps the economy necessity.
This had change my way of thinking and life because now i learned specific important facts about natural gas that i never knew. It makes me think that people really care for us and our needs. Plus i did not knew there were positive impacts about natural gas in our community. Plus unexpected things that someone might find insignificant could cause a very big change to the world. It makes me intrigue and curious to find more information about our environment, that may cause positive or negative changes in the world .Eventually that are important for us to know and be alert of.

ReplyDeleteDuring this week we were told that we had to a position paper as a project based on natural gas and its benefits and the risk that it has on certain things. I learned that natural gas comes from underground and which we use to cook in our houses. I also learned that is better than coal and oil. The way that we get natural gas is by a process called hydrofracking, which is how they release the natural gas from the Marcellus Shale.
I also learned that many people disagree weather they should continue with this process to get the natural gas, some people that are harmful and others say that is beneficial. I found interesting that if the natural gas is released by using the chemicals it can cause something called Carcinogenic, which is a cancer that is caused by using these types of chemicals. I also found interesting that it can harm our bodies of water; it also causes underground fractures, and is also radioactive. If releasing natural gas is so harmful then why use this technique? When they drill through the ground to get the gas, how do they cover the whole they drill?
This has affected the way I think because I learned a lot about how we get our gas. I also learned why is it bad that we get gas and why is good. Now I actually have a chance to have an opinion about natural gas, and I’m not completely clueless. I have also been wondering if there are any other way in which we can get natural gas?
This week we have started to learn about hydro fracking for natural gas. Natural gas we use for heating and for cooking, natural gas comes from living things that died millions of years ago, these non living things are covered with mud, sand , and silt these dead things after a while they turn into fossils. There are many steps for all this to happen some of the steps are drilling through the water table, fracture shale by using water, seal water table etc.
ReplyDeleteWhat I found interesting was all the steps that hydro fracking goes through and how dead things turn into fossils. Also natural gas was interesting to me because is trying to improve each time more, finding out ways that won’t affect the environment and the individuals. The way this would affect my surroundings (family, and friends) is because if you live near stuff like this you can get sick out of it. You could end up having something because this is very dangerous to be around. Many individuals have turned out to have cancer. Natural gas doesn’t only have risk there are also good things about it, such as more jobs and a better environment.
Natural gas has been around for millions of years and was created by the mixture of living things, covered with mud, silt, and sand. After a while, the mixture turns into fossils. Furthermore, The natural gas can be released from the fossils with a process named Hydrofracking. Hydrofracking is the process of drilling a hole into the ground to drain natural gas from the ground, and breaking into something called a water table. The water table is a part of the ground that separates the water form the fossils. By horizontally breaking into the water table and using water to fracture the shale, the gas can follow easily though a machine for Hydrofracking. This is interesting because natal gases are safer to use for our environment.
ReplyDeleteIn reality, the release of natural gas by Hydrofracking uses chemicals that can cause Carcinogenic, a deadly cancer. In addition, Hydrofracking chemicals can harm our bodies of water; and carries radioactive throughout other bodies of water. It’s interesting the fact that water waste treatment can’t treat radiation and some Hydrofracking chemicals. Yet, Hydrofracking seems to be an “environmentally friendly” way to get this resourceful fuel. Which brings the question why is this fuel so important?
Thought peoples everyday life, many don’t use gas much. The idea of
Hydrofracking seems pointless for something’s that isn’t used in society much. Although, natural gas is better then gasoline and lower the amount of pollution in our world.
This week in Environmental science, we Learned about our natural gas, in which is found in our own house, we use for cooking, it does not have a bad smell because it has a special chemical, also they dill down ground to get the natural gas, hydrofracking is how the natural gas is formed in which is with sand, mud, silt... pressured transformed those elements into gas, it travel around the whole earth surface, getting to our house.
ReplyDeleteNatural Gas is good for our society because there is no pollution, and is more healthy and proven not dangerous for us, it help us to get our food cooked and our water boiled. Also its not as strong as gasoline, because this gas has a chemical that is not as strong as it is use, the gasoline has a different type of chemical that makes it smell awful.
what i learned about this natural Gas is that it does not affect us and it helps us to learned of what we have in life, because others in different countries do not have natural gas, they have to heat there food in a different type of way, it makes us see that we have natural gas to heat the food and boiled water when ever we like, but others for example Africa they do not have natural gas, they have to do their food in a different form then us, and get water from rivers instead of boiling it in their own home.
Seniors,
ReplyDelete1. A carcinogen is something that causes cancer.
2. The wastewater resulting from hydrofracking can be radioactive. Radioactive materials are carcinogenic.
3. Your post can also be about bottled water v. tap water. Reflect on the entire topic now that your projects have been completed.

ReplyDeleteDuring this week, we started learning about hydro-fracking for natural gas. Natural gas is fuel that is used for heating, and cooking that is primarily methane that burns cleaner and is brighter than coal, and oil. Natural gas comes from living things that had died years ago, and are now covered by land. The pressure of it being the dead organism being covered turns it into fossils, then fossil fuel. Marcellus shale contains 489 trillion CF of natural gas located in southern western New York. We also learned the steps of the natural gas process. First, Drill through the water table, then Seal water table, third Drill into shale horizontally, fourth, Fracture shale by using water, fifth, Water is removed, then lastly, Gas starts to flow.
Before this lesson, I did not know what hydro-fracking for natural gases was and about natural gases. I believe hydro-fracking is important and useful for human society. If homes weren’t heated by natural gases when it gets cold, everyone would be freezing in cold winter days, possible causing high death rates. Also, human society needs natural gas for cooking in order to make food to survive. Our daily lives need natural gases in order to survive. However, some may believe hydro-fracking is harmful because hydrofracking leaves behind wastewater which is radioactive. Radioactive materials are carcinogenic. Carcinogenic are released and can cause different types of cancer and dangers into human society. Although, natural gas brings some dangers into society, there are more beneficial issues that without it humans wouldn’t be able to make a living.
On Wednesday we learned about natural gas. Explained it, how it’s form and where it’s found in New York. We also learned about hydrofracking, describing it and how it’s done.
ReplyDeleteNatural gas is fuel used for heating, cooking etc. primarily methane that is odorless but for safety, mercaptan is added to give it a stinky smell so the people can be aware of it. It also burns cleaner, hotter, and brighter than coal or oil. It’s primarily transported underground in pipes. Natural gas is made from dead organisms that are covered my mud, sand and silt. The pressure of it turns all the dead stuff into fossil and then gas that gets trapped. For example the Marcellus shale rock contains natural gas. It can be found in the South Western region of New York.
Hydrofracking is the process of how they [the people who work in this field] collect natural gas. To collect the natural gas they have to drill (vertically) into the ground through the water table. Then they seal it with cement to prevent a leak. Then they begin to drill (horizontally) into the shale and then they break the shale apart using 99% water and sand and 1% of other toxic chemicals. Once the shale begins to break up the toxic water gets removed, stored and treated. The left over sand keeps the shale open so all the gas can flow out and it gets collected at the top.
Natural gas and hydrofracking relates to my community and life because we use the natural gas in our everyday life. We use it to cook, get warm, heats our water etc. It’s also plays a role with global warming because it clears 17% of carbon dioxide.
During this week of environmental science I learned about many different things such Natural gas and the process that it goes through which is hydro-fracking. Natural Gas is mainly used for heating and cooking. Natural Gas is order-less because mecaptain is added. It is hotter, brighter then coal and oil. This type of gas can be found underground. The Marcellus shale which is located in Southern Western New York contains about 489 trillion CF of Natural gas. Each year we used 1 trillion natural so the amount we have right would last about 450 million years. Natural gas goes through a process called Hydro-fracking an these are the steps to hydro-fraacking. First drill through the water table then water table get sealed and when water is removed the gas starts to flow.
ReplyDeleteI found that this week was important because previously I didn't know anything about Natural gas and the process it goes through which is hydro-fracking. This week was interesting because now i know that Natural gas is the reason that us humans live everyday. I also learn that we have a lot of natural gas that will last us a very long time.
This changed my Perspective because I wonder if humans could survive without natural gas because natural gas is very important because it provide heat and help people cook in their households. This also changed my Perspective because I know we have a lot of Natural gas that will last us a very long time. Although their a lot of benefits of hydro-fracking, there is a lot of negative impact towards Hydro-fracking because Hydro-fracking leaves waste water and waste water is radioactive. Radioactive materials are carcinogenic and carcinogenic causes a lot of different type of cancer that can kill people. Therefore Hydro-fracking can be a benefit but it can also be very dangerous.
During this week of Environmental Science class we were introduced to natural gas. Natural gas is a fuel that it is used for cooking and heating. Natural gas burns cleaner, hotter, and brighter than coal or oil. This gas comes from the ground. Basically, dead things from long time ago got covered up with mud, sand and silt which caused pressure to turn these dead things into fossils, and then into gas. The process in which we obtain this natural gas is called hydro-fracking. After this process is done, the gas is transported underground through pipes. We can find natural gas in Southwestern New York.
ReplyDeleteIn order to get natural gas, workers have to first drill down through the water table, then seal the water table, then drill into the shale 8,000 feet below, then break the shale apart using water and additives, and lastly remove the water, to be then stored at the surface. After all this work, the natural gas flows.
I found this lesson to be very interesting. Learning about natural gas connects to my everyday live because I always cook at home, and never knew where my gas for “cooking” came from. Also, I thought we depended on other countries to get natural gas since we depend on other countries to get petroleum. It is a good idea that we get our gas from our own country and not other countries. This shows we are being independent. This lesson for some reason reminds me of the Dominican Republic because some cars over there run with gas. It is cheaper, but it is also very dangerous to run a car with gas because many say it can “explode”. In other words, natural gas is a very useful resource, just as it can be a very dangerous one.
This week in environmental Science, we had a warm up question to answer about what we think natural gas was and if we ever heard of the term hydrofracking. After answering the warm up question, Mr. Fox give us the definition of both hydrofracking, and natural gas along with the facts, where you could find it, and how it is being done.
ReplyDeleteNatural Gas is fuel used for heating, cooking, primarily methane that is odorless. Mercaptan is added to give it a bad smell that also burns cleaner, hotter, brighter than coal or oil. It is primarily transported underground. There is a process to find out where natural gas comes from. 200 million years ago living things die. Dead things are covered by mud, sand, and silt. Pressure turns dead stuff into fossils and then gas which is deposit in the United States, and traps around shale. Natural gas can be mostly found in the New York State marcellus shale that is located in south western New York, which is also around where our water comes from. Marcellus shale may contain 489 million cubic feet of natural gas, and it is not yet known how much gas will be recoverable.
Hydrofracking is an introduction to high volume hydraulic fracturing. It is the process of how people collect natural gas. To collect natural gas, they have to drill it trough the ground in the water table. They have to sealed the water table, and drill it into the shale horizontally. They fracture the shale using water, then water is removed. Additionally, the gas starts to flow. I learned that 99.5 percent of fracking fluid is water, and sand and about 1 percent of other chemicals. When the shale starts to break up, the toxic water gets removed and send to be treated with the waste water treatment plant. However, there is a problem with the waste water treatment plant which is the main problem to hydrofracking.
Natural gas and hydrofracking relates to my life because I need natural gas for cooking. As for hydrofracking, not only I have to worried about whether my water is safe to drink, but if I wanted to study science or geology, I needed to think about gas industry because it is responsible for creating and sustaining job in all these kinds of fields.
What is that one smell that we have all learned that shouldn’t be in our kitchen. The smell of gas. But did you know that the gas that comes from inside our stoves is actually natural gass which is odorless . The only reason we know what “gas” smells like is because Con Ed puts a chemical in the natural gas so that its can have a funny smell and we know when it is in the air. Natural gas is a fuel witch is mainly used for cooking and heating up are apartments. Which is mainly made up of methane. Natrual gas burns higher than caol or oil. Natural gases are formed by the things that have died millions of years ago; they dies got covered in mud, sand then the pressure turns the dead things in to fusil fuel. And I was a little confused by this when Mr.Fox told us the things that died. I thought its was like if you die tommorow the next day you will be fusil fuel but no he ment things that have died million and millions of years ago like the dinosaurs. It’s a little weird to know that your turning on your stuff and just burning something that is dead. Natural gas can be found many place and NYC is one of them. We can find natural gas in the South Western area of NYC(Marcelashell). It is said that there is 489 trillion cubic feet of gas there! So much right and we only use 1.1 trillion a year. The thing is we don’t really now how much is being put back. In lass we also learned about hydrofraking I still can not say what I believe about this. Hydrofraking is the new way of getting natural gas. It is more expensive because it requires more work and more machinery. Hydrofrakig consist of many steps. But I personally still seem not to find no use in it and can not decide rather I agree or not. I guess more of my questions need to be answered before I take a position. The one question that I really want to know is if it is hurting mother nature I feel like all this drilling is going to just mess up the entire ecosystem and way life should be functioning. I still want to learn more about gas and the difference between gas and fuel. When I was living I Dominican Republic I use to see many cars running on gas not fuel. The actual cooking tank used to be placed in back of the cars, so I would like to learn the science behind that.
ReplyDeleteSongs, poems, raps, videos and posters were sources that helped me make a decision on whether I am going to buy bottle water or drink tap water. After all the creative presentations this week, I have realized that tap water is not only safe to drink but cheaper. I learned that 40% of bottle water is actually tap water. Companies such as Dasani are charging consumers for a product they can get FREE. Bottle water is harming our environment because many people don’t recycle. 75% of plastic bottle end up in landfills, rivers, sewage. With this, the bottles are ending up in estuaries such as the Bronx River, hurting our environment and harming animals. Tap water is clean and meets all the standards required by DEP. After the presentations, I realized that am going to make the switch and drink tap water instead of buying bottle water.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I am going to encourage my family to drink tap water, and refill bottles rather than wasting money. Since many people buy bottle water because it is accessible and portable, we should have more recyclable bins in the nation. This would help promote recycling and be safer for the environment. I am going to take advantage of the resources that are available to me and drink tap water . . . you should too !
This week in environmental science I learned more about bottle water vs. Tapwater. My class finished presenting their projects and I had fun while learning more about this issue. Also, this week we began to learn about learning about hydro-fracking for natural gas. Natural gas is fuel that is used for heating, and cooking that is primarily methane that burns cleaner and is brighter than coal, and oil. I also learned in a reading we did in class for a position paper that natural gas cost 60 percent less than gas at the pump. This relates to my personal life being that I have a family car and a lot of money is waisted on gas. Natural gas is found underground in order to get this workers drill into the shale 8,000 feet below, then break the shale apart to let the gas flow. These important facts I learned this week were very interesting to learn because I also use gas to cook and heat food up this effects me and others and its something that is good to know more about being that I use this on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteAll of the presentations this week about bottled water v. tap water were creative ways of reminding people that they should make the switch to tap water. We learned that in reality, 40% of bottled water is actually tap water. We also learned that only 20% of water bottles are recycled. NYC tap water meets all the DOH requirements. The presentations, including poems, raps, poster boards and skits, have convinced me that tap water is not only tasty, but healthy, free and safe for the environment. I usually buy water bottles, especially since I was running track and playing soccer; but now I have a refillable water bottle that I use to drink water. I do have water bottles in my house, but we refill them as well.
ReplyDeleteDanya Gutierrez.
This week I learned about natural gas and how we get it from underground. Hydrofracking is when you break the Marcellus shale so that the natural gas get out. Natural gas is a efficient gas that burn brighter than oil and coal. This is used for stoves.
ReplyDeleteWhat I found interesting is that we have natural gas in our homes to cook everyday. I also found interesting that the gas that is in our homes has a smell so that if there is a fire people would be able to smell it. What happen to the earth if we keep using the process of Hydrofracking to get our natural gas?
Why cant we just get natural gas from other places? Who knew about the natural gas in the Marcellus Shale?
This changed me because I learned more about how we get natural gas and how it can affect us. It also change me because now I pay more attention when I'm cooking, and not waste a lot of gas by leaving it on to long. When was it discovered? I wonder what kind of machine they use to drill the underground? How they drill underground without affecting the water? What kind of cement they use to cover it up?

ReplyDeleteThis week during class we learned about natural gas and the process which is used to extract it from the marcellus shale to the surface. The process which is use is called hydrofracking in which a hole is drilled on the ground to the shale with explosives to crack the shale so that the natural gas can pour out and make its way to the surface for public use. In class we learned some positive and some negatives of the hydrofracking process.Hydrofracking helps us extract natural gas from the shale, natural gas is better than gasoline because the burning fuel is cleaner and wont pollute as much as gasoline. Natural gas also makes our country independent and betters the country’s economy natural gas cost 60% less than gasoline from pumps. Hydrofracking also helps with unemployment, the process gives more jobs to the people. Even thought hydrofracking has positive effects it also has some negative effects. During the hydrofracking process the hole drilled passes right through our water table and chemicals used to extract natural gas can run into out water and harm, water consumers and even cause cancer. I belive that the hydrofracking process is amazing even though it has negative effects it still is and advantage more than a disadvantage .Hydrofracting is good solution for pollution to be reduced in our planet.Natural gas provides jobs to the unemployed ,reduces pollution, and is way cheaper than gasoline.I think that more natural gas should be hydrofracked so that individuals can spend less money and reduce pollution.
ReplyDeleteThis week in Environment science class we began to learn about Natural gases. We started to learn where natural gases come from and how it is made. We first began by listing down what we had thought natural gases were. When we had figured out what they actually were. We began to learn about hydrofracking and what it was. Hydrofracking is a way of getting natural gas. Before learning that we had learned that under New York there is a shale rock that we can mine to get another type of fuel source, but the only way to get this is by hydrofracking. At first I had thought that why don’t we all just hydrofrack, since the energy we can use is cleaner cheaper and it burns brighter. if New York can get to this fuel source. it can fuel us for more than 15 years. The problem with hydrofracking is that contaminates that are used to break down the rock can get into peoples drinking water. Creating many types of problems for the drinkers.
ReplyDeleteThis week in Environmental Science class, we had to make our own project using the advertising techniques that we had learned throughout the week. Some of these techniques were emotional appeal, bandwagon, testimonial, snob appeal, patriotism, and plain folks. To me this was an exciting activity to be part of. Not only did we see real advertisements that persuade people to buy bottled water, but we also got to make one with our classmates. One question we discussed was which technique is most effective and why? My response to this question was that I believe the emotional appeal, is the most effective advertisement technique. I said this because it has to do with your emotions. Therefore, if a product can connect to your inner feelings it can hook you.
ReplyDeleteIn class we learned a lot about bottled water companies like Poland Spring, Smart water, and Dasani. The company that had the most effective techniques was Dasani. Their advertisement was all about being eco friendly, and recycling. Therefore, this appeals to the individuals’ sense of emotion. If a person who wants to make a difference in the environment sees this, they will want to buy it. Learning about these ads, and making our own advertisement was a great experience.
In the making of the project, I had an amazing time with my friends. Our project basically summarized how, tap water is better than bottled water. This activity changed the way I thought about bottled water companies. I always thought it was true what they said about tap water, and how “unsafe” it is to be consumed. I was wrong and now I made the change in switching to tap water. I still wonder how far will these companies go with their false advertisements? Will they keep on with their excuses and keep persuading the individuals who fall for it, or will they understand that they are not only affecting the people, but also themselves since their part of the environment that we live in.

This week in Environmental Science class we talked about the pros and cons of hydrofracking. Hydrofracking is the process of collecting natural gas. To collect the natural gas you have to drill into the ground through the water table. Then you have to seal it with cement to prevent any leaking. After this you have to drill horizontally into the shale. When the shale break up the waste water gets taken away to be treated. Then the natural gas is finally collected. Natural gas is made from dead organisms that get covered by mud, sand and silt. The pressure ends up turning the dead organism into fossils. The fossils traps the gas inside. This is why the government need to use the process of Hydrofracking, to get the natural gas out. Natural gas is so important because it is the fuel used for things such as heating and cooking. This is so important to me because, I use natural gas in my everyday life. I use natural gas to heat food everyday. I love to cook chicken with rice.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I think that there are more benefits to hydrofracking. One benefits is the increase of natural gas could reduces the U.S. trade deficit by $25 billion per month. Also natural gas cost 60 percent less than gasoline at the pump. Overall, oil, gas, and solution salt mining contributes more than $500 million to the state economy each years. Hydrofracking finally creates many job opportunities.
This is important because my perspective in the world has change. Before this class I didn't know where the gas that I use to cook with came from. This is so interesting to me because we are using all of our resources. Using the dead bodies from hundreds of years ago, that turned into fossils, with natural gas inside of it. In my opinion I think this is brilliant. Like I said before hydrofracking creates a lot of jobs which is good, because a lot of people are unemployed because of the bad economy these days.
I hadn’t a clue what was natural gas: where it came from or how it played a role in our lives. I didn’t give it much thought, to be completely honest I thought natural gas was only used for cars. I also thought that natural gas was something that was found easily like rocks. It’s used for heating, and cooking it is basically a form of energy, and it’s said to be the cleanest too. Like almost every essential source in life I suppose that it must run out someday like perhaps water.
ReplyDeleteMany people are concerned about natural gas because it releases toxins in order to obtain it. Although some have said that the toxins thrown into our water followed by a procedure of hydrofracking the toxins is nothing out of the ordinary. The toxins released from hydrofracking are no different from the dispose we commit to in our everyday life such as lemonade.
Hydrofracking requires a number of steps. You begin by clearing of the area then drill downward and then horizontally for up to 8,000 feet in each direction. The negative outcome of this process is that to complete the process about an average of 6-8 million gallons are used per hydrofracking.
Hydrofracking is a method of getting natural gas because natural gas is formed underground when living things die off in the ground and is covered and pressured within layers of other materials such as mud, and dust particles. That is why hydrofracking is necessary to obtain what was left out of the non-living things piled by layers of grounding.
Natural gas was completely different than I set it out to be. It is much more important to me than I thought because it is a type of energy that is useful in my life.

This week in Environmental Science I learned about natural gas and hydro-fracking. Natural gas is mainly used for heating and cooking. This gas is odorless because mecaptian is adden on it. This gas is found underground. Marcellus shale is found in Southern Western part of New York. In order to obtain the gas a process of hydro-fracking is used. In hydro fracking you first drill through the water table. Then the water table is sealed to be protected, when it is sealed the water is removed and stored at the surface. After that the gas starts flowing through so that it is collected.
ReplyDeleteThis week was interesting because I knew absolutely anything about natural gasses let alone hydro-fracking. I think it’s important now that I know what hydro-fracking is and how important it is for our survival. Natural gases are used in our daily lives.
Learning about natural gases hasn’t really changed my perspective but it has taught me not to take what I have for granted. It has taught me that there is a lot of natural gas in New York but that if we don’t conserve some we might not have for the future. I am still wondering about hydro-fracking if it’s more of a positive thing or a negative thing because of the articles we have read this week on this process.
This week we have learned about Natural Gas. In which is used for heating and cooking. we learned that normally the gas doesnt smell, but they have placed a chemical to it so that we could be aware when something is burning or if we have left the gas on. I learned that we could find our gas in New York City in the Marcellus shale in sout western. we also learned about hydrofracking which is the way people collect the natural gas. They have a long processin which they have to follow. First they have to drill down into the water table, then seal the water table with cement, keep drilling into the shale, fracture the shale by using the water, once thats done the water is removed and turn into gas that then flows.
ReplyDeleteWhat I found interesting and difficult to understand was the hydrofraking and the steps it goes throw for the gas to flow.
This relates to my daily life because with hydrofrakingwe would knoe if our water its safe to drink or not,and with natural gas we would be able to use it for cooking and heating.
On Monday and Tuesday, everyone presented their campaign project on tap water. There were different types of projects like posters, books, videos and skits. I did a children’s book. Before the presentations began, I didn’t know what to expect. Last week, everyone one was so excited when they would talk about what they were going to do for their project and I was wondering if they actually did do what they said.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the presentations, I was amazed at how good most of them were. I could really see that they spent time on their project because they were thoughtfully made. I really liked the videos that people made. I feel that those presentations had more dedication to them. They were also really funny. Everyone was creative. I think I was creative too because my classmates still talk about Mr. Tappy! I’m very proud of everyone because of the awesome presentations!
I feel like this topic about tap water has impacted us all. It’s made such an impact that we even make jokes about it. It’s officially become a part of us. Before, I’m sure no one ever really thought about water. Now I feel like whenever we see someone with a water bottle, we secretly want to hit them with the bottle (well at least that’s how I feel). I’m glad we’re more sensitive about water bottles. This class is a real eye opener.
This week in Environmental Science we learned about the differences of tap water and bottled water through class performances and projects. It taught me many more different facts about the realities of bottled water and the detrimental effects it can have on us and our world. We then started to learn about clean energy and the key points to creating "clean energy" in our state. Instead of purchasing fuel for our state, the state government is looking for alternatives to not waist money. Hydrofracking is a source that was found in order to have fuel. It is easier and less costly but the negative impacts it creates on our water supply is not healthy or beneficial to our land. You have to drill 1 mile below the earths surface to find fossils which contains the natural gas. Upon releasing the gas it causes negative impacts. Learning about hydro fracking and clean energy alternatives made me realize that it is not really clean and energy and we must stop this process now before it is to late.
ReplyDeleteThis week in environmental science we started a new unit about natural gas and hydrofracking. We talked about positive and negative things of hydrofracking and natural gas. Hydrofracking is the drilling of natural gas and is how we get natural gas from underground. Hydrofracking could be negative in many ways. One reason why hydrofracking could be negative is because during hydrofracking 6-8 million gallons of fresh water is used in each drilling. Then all the water that was used during the drilling is then send to a water treatment, that way all the water that was used could be clean up and the save to drink. Their is a problem with this because the water that was used for the drilling can not be effectively treated with the treatment plants. In many ways drinking water could be contaminated and not be safe to drink, so chemicals used in the drilling could end up in our food. If people start drinking this contaminated water then it could cause carcinogen that cancer which is very dangerous. Finally another negative thing is that living near gas wells could caused pollution in the air and increased asthma problems.
ReplyDeleteMany people argue that hydrofracking is bad because it contaminates the water. What people do not know is that hydrofracking creates more job since naturals gas is one of the most usable source in the world so many gas companies need alot of employers in order for this process and gas to get to peoples house.
Natural gas is a fossil fuel. Like oil and coal this means that it is made of animals and plant that existed thousand of years ago. In order naturals is made of pressure. Naturals gas is the most safest, cleanest and most useful of all energy source. Many individuals think that natural gas smell but they are wrong because what many companies due is that they add a chemicals that way people would know is gas and prevent a fire.
This week we learned about Hydrofracking. Hydrofracking is a form of obtaining gas from a rock. Marcellus Shale is a sedimentary rock that is found in large amounts in New York City. The process used today is Hydrofracking. What Hydrofracking does is that you first drill a few miles to reach the Marcellus Shale underground, then you cut through the rock with water, which is mixed with sand and other toxins, and finally the water is pushed back up by the gas. During the process, the water is protected by putting in cement so that the ground water does not get contaminated by the gas.
ReplyDeleteI did not know that our easy access to gas was delivered to us in such a process. Gas is used in our everyday lives for cooking and heating. There is 489 million cubic feet of natural gas and we use 1.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas a year. Our human population continues to increase and our amount of natural gas used will also increase as the human population increases. We may run out of natural gas. New York State has to find a way to conserve gas or find more access to gas to maintain us with easy access for heating.

This week in Environmental Science I learned about natural gas and hydro-fracking. We also had our groups present, on the topic about bottled and tap water. Getting back to hydrofracking; hydrofracking is the process that is used to get natural gas to our homes. This gas is the one we use to keep us warm, and this is the gas we use to cook our food. This gas is odorless, although Con Ed does add some certain chemicals to alert us, if we ever have a gas leak in our homes which can be harmful. This natural gas is mainly found in the South wester part of New York state, although there are numerous places to obtain this gas in the United States. The process of hydrofracking includes: drilling into the earth, once it reaches the fresh water then is sealed with cement and other chemicals to make sure the water isn't harmed by the gas, the drilling continues until it reaches the shale which then in goes vertically into, water, sand , and other chemicals are then pumped into the shale causing it to crack. Once the water is then pumped out it leaves sediments of sand to hold these cracks open, which provides the gas to smoothly flow back up to the surface. The water used for this process in then put into a pit till tucks pick it up, which will have to get processed in processing plants. Many of the time these plants aren't getting out the Carcinogenic chemicals than can cause us to have cancer. This water needs to go through a much more powerful processing I would say, so that people aren't harmed by it.
ReplyDeleteDuring this week in Environmental Science class, we started learning about Natural Gas and Hydrofracking. Hydrofracking is process where we can get our Gas from. I learned that Natural Gas is odorless and that it comes from Marcellus Shale that can be found underground, and natural gas is basically from other dead things that lived before. Gas is another important source that is used everyday, for cooking, for driving, for heating us up. When we first talked about Natural Gas, i knew gas was odorless, and it how it was important to add a special chemical, so that it would tell us where the gas smell comes from. However i did not know Natural Gas came from dead things that is covered by sand and mud, that has been pressured down into fossils.

This week in Environmental Science I learned about the risks of hydrofracking. Hydrofracking is the process of drilling underground in order to release natural gas. Natural gas is fuel used for cooking and heating. It is normally odorless but gas companies add a stinky smell called mercaptan to aware people that there is a gas leakage near, considering it is a deadly substance if inhaled in any way.
ReplyDeleteHydrofracking generate many risks to our community. One of those risks is the radioactive elements wastewater contain that can be carcinogenic. This is harmful to us humans because we could easily develop cancerous cells in our body if we were exposed to that water. The radioactivity levels are higher than ever known and far higher than the level federal regulators say is safe. These levels of radioactivity on wastewater has sometimes been hundreds or even thousands of times the maximum allowed by the federal standard for drinking water. Another risk is that sewage treatment plants are incapable of removing certain drilling waste contaminants which are probably violating the law. Because of this, it is safe to say that there is no way of guaranteeing that the drinking water taken in by all these plants is safe.
I have never really thought out the cycle in which it takes for the natural gas to arrive to my stove, however now that I know I think that more can be put into the process of hydrofracking in order to prevent this deadly risks from worsening, considering hydrofracking is an advanced way to get natural gas. I have to admit I’ve sometimes accidentally left the stove on that if it wasn’t for the mercaptan I probably would have died inhaling the gas without notice.

ReplyDeleteThis week I have learned many important facts. First off I have learned what “natural gas” is and how is it important in our everyday lives. Natural gas is an odorless gas used for cooking or reheating. I figured out that the blue flames coming out of the stove when I cook is actually natural gas! I also learned that it is a very clean source compared to oil and coal. Before I thought that the only thing we received from the things that have decayed under ground was oil and coal, but I also learned that natural gas is also received from underground. We receive our natural gas from rocks like shale. They are trapped inside the shale and that is why we use the process of hydrofracking.
Hydrofracking is important in our everyday lives because it is the only way we can receive this natural gas we use daily. We surprisingly use about 1 trillion every year. Many believe that since we use massive amounts of water mixed with chemicals in order to fracture these rocks and receive the gas; we are contaminating our water. What people do not realize is that the components, these chemicals contain are things that we flush down into our water streams. This means that these chemicals aren't something new in our water system. If these chemicals do not seem to get removed from the water, we should not ban hydrofracking. We are going to have these chemicals inside our water with or without hydrofracking; instead we should advance our water system.
I found this extremely interesting due to the fact that I was unaware of this clean source, and factor that we use in our everyday lives. Hydrofracking is important in my opinion due to the fact that we as Americans are in a difficult time economically. Hydrofracking is providing 20,000 good paying jobs! And its a source that many many people use which helping us economically. Banning hydrofracking would also be a mistake due to the fact, it would hurt the environment more. By not having this clean source we would use an excessive amount of sources that are worse for our community such as oil and coal, instead of natural gas.

In Environmental Science this week we were given a task to make either a video, skit,or a write up talking about the difference between tap water and bottled water and why tap is a better choice.
ReplyDeleteWe first had a lesson about different types techniques such as emotional appeal, testimonial, and snob appeal. We used this techniques in our project to show how many people are influenced by bottled water and why they choose it over tap water. Many people pick bottled water over tap water because many think that tap water is dirty because it comes in from pipes, which is why they would pick the bottled water thinking that is cleaner. What me and my group found out was that in our bottled water one third of it is tap water. In my opinion emotional appeal is the technique that is more influenced by the people. One example was the ASPCA commercial. They would put the poor crying dog on the camera to make u see how much they suffering so you can get the dog. Many feel very sad about it which makes them want to get the dog. Same thing with tap water, they may put commercial or documentary of how dirty that water can be which would make them buy the bottled water. My group and I decided that tap is a better choice. Bottled water has many chemicals in the bottled that can affect the human. Bottled water causes pollution, many people do not recycle and that bottled just end up in the rivers. Which is bad for the animals living there it can cause deaths for those fishes. If the fishes die it can be a problem because many humans eat fish. Tap water is free and also healthy, doesn't have chemicals. That is why my group choose tap water as a better choice.
This has definitely affected the way i see bottled water. I know drink water from my house. It can save up money from my pocket and i can get it when ever i want and its free. This week was very creative and interesting. I like this class and i love just being creative and learning new things.
This week in Environmental Science I learned alot about Hydrofracking and the benefits and non-benefits. Hydrofracking is a process used to obtain natural gas from the surface of the Earth. Natural Gas origionated 200 million years ago when everything living died. All of the dead bodies piled up and applied enough pressure that they all turned to fossils. Those fossils eventually turned into natural gas(fossil fuels). The Marcellus Shale located between Ohio/West Virginia and Pennsylvania/Southern New York is used to obtain some natural gas.
ReplyDeleteThere are at least 6 steps into obtaining natural gas from the Marcellus Shale.
1. Drill through the water table
2. Seal the water table or well
3. Drill into the shale
4. Break the shale apart using water
5. All of the water is removed in order to prevent a mix.
6. Gas starts to flow out
Gas can be used for fuel, heating, cooking, but it is primarily Methane/CH4. In one of the articles By Michael Benjamin, he explains how natural gas exploration is an economic necessity, Also gas exploration is not a threat to the water quality. Then in another article by Ian Urbina, Tan explains how some companies and administrations are sharing some industry's optimism. In other words the industry PR(administrations) are pointing in one direction or their true goal while science is pointing in another direction. I believe that Hydrofracking is a good way for the economy and my life because without gas, my family wouldn't be able to cook food nor have a heater to warm us up. If I ever had a car, how would I get to work, how would I use transportation. Natural Gas is necessary for the society.
This week I learned about hydro-fracking for natural gas. We learned about the risks and the benefits. Natural gas is used for heating and cooking, and other purposes. While learning about where our gas comes from and finding out that natural gas comes from underground shocks me. At first I never really thought about where or how gas is made. This week I also found out gas has its own smell, because chemicals are added to it, this benefits us because it allows us to be aware when something is burning or if we have left the gas stove on. One risk that natural gas adds on the environment is that it causes many health effects living near the drillings. Some of the chemicals used in hydrofracking are carcinogen which means that it causes cancer. This is a risk in hydrofracking because the drillings and chemicals are not good for humans. Although the drillings do create jobs it still would not benefit or be agreed to that people are in a safe environment.
ReplyDeleteThis week we also presented our own perspectives about water. How water bottles are not good, and how they have chemicals and unhealthy particles in each bottle. We learned and were highly influenced by each presentation that tap water is more beneficial more economical way of keeping yourself satisfied, and healthy. Each presentation had its own appeal, and we either had to do a rap, video, advertisement, poem, poster. In which we all looked forward too and we all put a lot of effort in. My group and I decided to make a video, and in this video we posted up facts we found about bottled water and tap water, we also created a slide show of pictures. This was a great experiment because I got to work with others.
This week was full of new exciting facts everyday just like any other week .But to me the key day was on Wednesday.Wednesday we learned about natural gas and hydrofracking. we went very in depth we looked at it , learned about it , what it is how its transported, and explained it.
ReplyDeleteNatural gas is fuel that is used for everyday purposes such as cooking heating and vital parts of other things that we need in life.Although it is for the most part natural to the gas a chemical called mercaptan is added to give it a weird smell in order for it to be identified by human beings. The reason for this is that if it is not then it highly dangerous and hazardous as if a room is full of this gas it can be a matter of time for a spark to make the place blow . Natural gas is made through pressure of dead organisms underground from millions of years ago. These organisms are usually under mud , salt, and sand. The fossil like shale is then cracked to alleviate the gases. In other words Hydrofracking.
Hydrofracking is what it takes to release and get the gases. In order for this to happen it takes a long process. To collect the natural gas we have to drill down and crack some of the water tables underground. After this has happened we have to take responsibility and initiative and seal these leaks that will be caused due to the drilling. The next step is to start drilling in another direction as we are now going to attempt to brake the shale.Once broken the shale begins the toxic water gets removed, stored and then treated taken by workers who pick them up with trucks. The last part is that once done all the sand keeps the shale open as its still flowing so all the gas can flow out then to get collected at the top from where we started drilling.
Natural gas and hydrofracking is in direct correlation with my society and me due to the fact that it plays such an essential role when it comes to everyday things that we have adapted to having in our everyday lives if not for not for natural gas we would not have heat as we have it today we would not be able to cook or do a lot of things that in the day of today people need to survive. It not only plays a role with our material needs but also goes into direct correlation with our earth and environment.Natural gas plays a role with global warming. As natural gas is used it clears 17% of carbon dioxide this has a direct affect on global warming and us.While also in our air the process used to have natural gas come into affect with our land and marines because no matter how much we try to fix it just drilling into our land is going to affect the world this is where hydrofracking comes into play.

On Wednesday October 26 we learned about Natural Gas and everything about it, what is natural gas to how is formed. Natural gas is a gas primarily consisting of Methane (CH4) considered as a fuel. Natural gas is used mainly for heating and cooking. Natural gas comes from former living organisms that are about 200 million years old and dead things that are covered by mud, sand and silt. The natural gas that new Yorkers use comes from the Marcellus shale which contains about 489 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Hydrofracking is a process used to obtain natural gas, it consists of drilling down the water table, then sealing the water table to prevent escape of gas, followed by drilling into the shale, then breaking the shale apart using water, followed by the removal of water and then the gas starts to float out.
ReplyDeleteI found this topic very interesting because natural gas is odorless when I always believed it wasn’t because ConEd adds a smell to it in order for people to notice it in cases of gas escapes to prevent fires, also natural gas is considered better than coal or oil, and that is transported underground to prevent any flammable accidents. A final fact I found interesting is that New Yorkers use about 1.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas a year. There is a great conflict in whether the natural gas should be acquired by the use of hydrofracking.
This has changed the way I look at natural gas because I always thought it was something really accessible but now I know it’s expensive to acquire, also I realized that it’s not an infinite resource so we have to preserve it. I am more aware when I use the stove and I will inform my parents.
This week in science class we learned about natural gas. We learned how it was created in our own earth by the death of the dinosaurs that once roamed the earth. They all died and while there bodies were left to rot they were covered by land and millions of years of compression which eventually created a gas we now refer to as fossil fuel of or natural gas which soon became a rather useful form of fuel. The newly discovered fuel burned cleaner, hotter and brighter than other fuels. The gas is primarily made up of methane it is a highly flammable chemical it is completely scentless but for safety reasons mercaptan is added to the gas giving it a strong smell in order to be smelled by anybody in order to prevent an accident from happening.
ReplyDeleteThe Marcellus shale rock contains natural gas, it can be found in the South Western region of New York. Were ever that a gas reservoir is found people begin to hydrofrack which is the method that people take gas out of the shale rock. There are two ways to hydrofrack the first method is to dig directly into the shale rock but many people claimed that that caused some gas to leak out so they changed the way they did it and dig down vertically and then went horizontally which was said to be a more effective method of digging for the gas. They drill in to the shale using 99% water and sand the other 1% that is used is of chemicals that can be found in everyday household products. Many people claim that this is a harmful process to the environment and the people that live near were hydrofacking is according since they claim that the water that is used is not clean after it is used in the digging process. Also there are lots of complains of people becoming sick since there is a high release of carbon dioxide in the area causing cancer to some people.
The process of hydrofacking is very important in my life since me and my families use the gas that is brought out of the shale. It is also a bad thing for the planet that I live in since it is polluting the earth as well as polluting some people’s life when they get sick and die.
This week in environmental science I got the chance to reflect on water consumption in New York City. I changed my whole opinion on things I found to be healthy and normal when in fact I didn’t know as much as I thought.
ReplyDeleteI believed that tap water was the poorest water quality that New York had to offer, but in fact its actually very clean and refreshing. The media has degraded tap water with their advertisements. Big water bottle companies appeal to the public through different techniques, whether it’s implementing celebrities in their Ad’s or adding a lot of facts and/or opinions in their commercials.
What really blew my mind this week was the facts that water bottle companies such as “Aquafina” and “Dasani” using tap water to manufacture their water. If I’m paying for water I can get at my own home, why don’t I create my own water bottle company right at home?! We’re paying 2000 x as much more for water than we really should. I recommend switching to an environmentally safe reusable water bottle.
This week in environmental science we presented our project, showing different type of techniques like snob appeal, testimonial and emotional appeal to convince why tap water is a better choice than tap water. I've been drinking tap water ever since and influencing people to drink tap water.
ReplyDeleteThis week we learned about natual gas. Natural gas is used for cooking and heating. Natural gas is formed by species that were living once (mostly dinosaurs)that got covered by sand and mud.The pressure turned it into fuels.Natural gas don't usually smell but companies like Con Edison adds chemical to the gas so that people would be aware if something is burning (smart). Our natural gas comes from South Western New York. We also learned about the benefits and the risks of hydrofracking. Hyfrofracking is a way of getting natural gas from the rocks under us. First, they drill till they hit the water tables. Then, they seal the water table so it won't mix with water. Next, they drill horizontally so we can get more gas. Then, fracture shale by using water. When water is removed the gas starys to flow .Some benefits hydrofracking has is that it creates about 20,000 different jobs. Also hydrofracking is cheaper and we can get more gas by doing it this way. Some of the risks are that it can cause carcinogen, which means it can cause cancer. People who reguraly eats fish can be diagnosed with cancer. Also there is a higher chance of children gettin cancer.
During this week of Environmental Science we learned about natural gas and how we obtain it. We use natural gas for heating and cooking and we obtain gas through a precess called Hydrofracking. Hydrofracking is a system where we drill into the ground, past the water table, and into the Marcellus Shale. We then put cement around the edges of the hole in order to lock out the water table to prevent it from getting contamintaed by the gas. After, we pump in water, mixed with sand and other toxins, to break the shale. The gas that leaks out of the shale pushes the water out and then we collect the gas.
ReplyDeleteThere is about 489 trillion cubic feet of Marcellus Shale left in the United States that is located in southern New York to West Virginia. Annually, we use approximately 1.1 trillion cubic feet of the marcellus shale. If we continue to use this amount, in a matter of a few years, we will run out of gas. Another factor to consider is the growth in the human population. There are currently 8 million people in this world, a number that will increase rapidly. The more people there are in this world, the more gas is going to be used. As a whole, we either have to use less gas nor we have to find algternative energy sources. If we do not find a quick solution, the future generation will be doomed.

ReplyDeleteThis week in class we learned a lot about natural gases and Hydrofracking. Hydrofracking and natural gases are closely related, but has caused debates between people about water resources for civilizations around our country.
ReplyDeleteWe learned the natural gas is fuel used for heating and cooking. It is also primarily methane. Its odorless but Con Edison makes it smell like rotten eggs for our safety so we can detect gas leaks. Natural gas is preferable than other gases since it burns cleaner, hotter and brighter that other sources. Natural gas is found underground and made from dead things that were buried and covered millions of years ago and under tons of pressure.
Natural gas can be found in New York City, (NYC). in the Marcellus shale region. Shale is a type of stone that contains natural gas. Hydrofracking is a method use to drill under ground and into shale rock to capture natural gases. Hydrofracking is when you drill into shale and its broken apart using water. The water is removed and stored at the surface afterwards the collection of gas begins.
Some people worry that hydrofracking contaminates water sources for cities and pollutes the drinking water. There has been different studies that prove that hydrofracking does contaminate the drinking water, but there has also been different studies that disproves that claim.
This relates to us since hydrofracking can affect the water supply where we get our water from. The problem is knowing weather it actually contaminates our water or not. This means if Hydrofracking was to be done near our reservoirs then serious testing will need to be done to see if its actually safe for our drinking water.
As this week we finally came to a conclusion in our water project. After listening to various poems, dancing among songs and raps, enjoying powerpoint presentations and looking at interring posters. After much repetition the validity effect sink in, the debate between tap water verses bottle water in my head. I finalized my opinion why tap water is better then bottled water, both health wise and environmental wise. I was remind of the land fills in India as well as the false advertisements bottle water companies. To the amount of chemicals that are carcinogens to our body found in water bottles in comparison to tap water because those companies are not as regulated as tap water.
ReplyDeleteThough out this first half of our trimester we have learned a lot about the value of tap water. We started by learning about the background information about like where it comes from and how different people value water as a whole because they do not have access to it as easily as Americans do. Then we got more and more specific with the value of New York’s tap water, we learned about the Catskill Mountains and Delaware aqueducts and how we get our water, to a more current event about the construction of the third water tunnels because New Yorkers can’t afford the millions of gallons they are losing a day. Moreover, we even got close to the topic to relate it close to what is a concern now and might be a bigger future concern, which was the why are we buying so much water bottles when we have clean and free tap.
Although it is a different stories for New Yorker since they do have the accessibility to clean tap . It might be a bigger issue later when hydro-fraking might infect our clean, healthy water with
radioactive carcinogen filled chemicals that might put everyone health at stake. This brings up a big concern for me because after arguing and believing that tap water is that best, we might in the end if a solution is not found might have to turn to bottle water, that is both going to hurt us economically and environmentally. A solution for one problem in this case is the cause of a bigger problem.
This week in environmental science we presented our projects advertising tap water to the class. We then began learning about hydrofraking, we learned about both the possible positive and negative aspects of drilling into the ground to obtain this resource.
ReplyDeleteHydrofraking is done in order to collect natural gas, natural gas is what comes out of our stoves, its used for heat. Natural gas is made of methane, this gas has no smell. This gas also has benefits, its cleaner and hotter than coal or oil, individuals want to drill underground for this gas so that more gas can be produced from a single well, less of the ground surface is disturbed this way. The production of natural gas will also provide thousands of jobs for citizens, it costs less than gasoline, its more convenient for the people and out environment.
Although drilling for this gas has its positives it also has its negatives. There are radioactive chemicals that can leak into the water, and cannot be cleansed, some chemicals used in hydrofraking contain carcinogenic, the demand in water testing has increased, people are also doubtful about the estimate of the amount of natural gas underground.
Learning these things made me wonder what would be the best way to go, would the positive aspects of hydrofracking over power the negatives? Or would the negatives have a longer lasting effect on our environment making the positives not worth consuming? Should we take this risk?
-Lisnanlly Guaba
This past week, we learned about Hydrofracking which is also another meaning for high volume hydrolic fracking. This is used to get natural gas from the ground. Natural gas is an odorless methane that burns clean and is transported underground. This gas burns cleaner and hotter. It is also brighter than coal or oil. This gas comes from within deep inside the ground in a rock called shale. This rock can be found in west southern New York. After dinosaurs were extinct the ground pushed over on one another for millions of years turning fossils into gas that are known as hence fossil fuels.
ReplyDeleteHydrofracking is done by a drilling through a water table. A sealing then goes through the water table so that way no methane nor can can go through the water. After being dug thousands of feet underground, miners drill horizontally where the shale is fractured. Water is then pumped throughout that pipe that form small cracks through the wall. From there the water is then removed and the gas that remains starts to flow with small particles of sand within the cracks.
This changed my way of thinking because I did not even know that natural gas was so important in our daily lives. I also learned that there are multiple reasons why individuals would be interested in drilling for gas. Buildings and cooperation's need gas for them to function properly. We also use natural gas as citizens everyday. If we drill for gas what would we use? Essentially this is important to our society because we use a lot of energy which is about 25% of the worlds energy and this is just United States itself.
This week the class rpresented their water project on bottled water vs. tap water. Many of the projects were creative and their were many different types such as videos, posters and even rap songs. We all found a creative way of making it funny but still getting the important message through.Learning about water in the first trimester really helped me make my position on the the water issues stronger. Ive always known that bottled water has always had a negative effect on our planet the liquid and the bottle, but just reading on how so many people know the effects but still dont do anything about it. The FDA and EPA are both in charge of water but the FDA is for bottled water and EPA is for tap water and we found out that the EPA has many more requirement on making for the water is safe to drink.
ReplyDeleteWe also started learning our new topic, gas. We started learning about hydrofracking and the negative and positive effects.Hydrofracking is the new way to create energy that pollutes less than coal and oil. The new way is to drill down to the shale which is where the gas is.
1. Drill down which passes ...
-The water aquifers
-The shallow oil and gas zones
-And then gets to the deep gas zone
When it gets to the Deep gas zone thats when they stop drilling and release water down the pipe so the water can crack the shale. The water has many sediments such as mud, salt, sand and rocks which will keep the cracks open. The the water is brought up and then the gas is released.
This week we learned about natural gas and hydrofracking . Natural gas is used for heating and cooking. Natural gas is primarily methane which is odorless and burns bright and hotter than oil. Natural gas is made from 200 million year ago living things that die that is covered with mud, sand, and silt that is pressured making it turn in to a fossil then a gas after time. This has made me think that if we know how natural gas is made why we can make it in a lab just like they do to make diamonds in the lab.
ReplyDeleteWhat is hydrofracking ? It is a process of extracting natural gas from the ground. Natural gas is found trapped in shale. In hydrofracking drilling is done to reach the shale. While drilling down underground drillers come across ground water where they have to seal with cement so that the gas later on won’t contaminate the water. Then they continue drilling down until they reach the shale and bend it so that they drill a mile in to the shale. They then pump water with sand and other things to fracture the shale so that the gas is released. The water then is pumped out and the gas is collected.
I then learned that there are many benefits of hydrofracking especially in New York where there is one of the largest areas of Marcellus shale south west of New York. On e benefit of hydrofracking is that it creates thousands of jobs. Another benefit is that it is cheaper because it’s closer. In addition it allows states to gain billions of dollars which can be used for programs or projects. The last benefit is that it would cut carbon dioxide emissions by 17 percent reducing global warming.
This has made me think more on the type of fuels we use and how we get them. This makes me want to learn more on natural gas and if it can be reused or made safer for the environment. From this you can see that hydrofacking has a lot of benefits that are need in today’s society. One Question that this had lead me to think about is what would happen if the gas runs out?
This week we learned about natural gas and what we do in order to get obtain the gas. pipes are put under ground nearly 10,000 feet and water sand and chemicals are pressured through to break through rocks which contain the gas. This whole process is called hydrofracking. The Natural gas we get from hydrofracking are used for things such as cooking and household heating. while i was learning about hydrofracking it really changed the way i thought about where our gas came from. I used top think that gas was just a element created by man that allows us to make fire , but after this activity it really helped my understanding of where our gas comes from. i found hydrofracking interesting because it showed me how the process of getting our natural gas is done and also by viewing a video it also helped me the risk hydrofracking can have.
ReplyDeleteThis week we learned about Natural gases, Hydrofracking, pros and cons of hydrofracking, and where we could find Natural gases in New York State.
ReplyDeleteNatural gas is a fuel that is used for heating and cooking. It burns cleaner, than coal or oil. It is primarily made up of methane(CH4) and it is odorless. it is found underground and it is formed up of pressure that covers up dead things that turn into fossils and, then gas(hence fossil fuels).
Hydrofracking is high volume hydraulic fracturing. It is the process in which we get our natural gases. There are 6 steps in this process for getting Natural gases underground.
1)Drill through the water table.
2)Make sure to seal the water table.
3)Drill into the shale (horizontally).
4)Fracture the shale using water.
5)Then remove all the water used to fracture the shale.
6)Finally, the Natural gas will start to flow through and the sand left behind keeps the cracks open so that the Natural gases could be let out.
The pros of Hydrofracking are:
1)It allows citizens to get the Natural gases they need for heating and cooking.
2)Has helped many farmers with their lives.
3)Business has seemed to speed up without hurting the countries debt.
4)Has supported many jobs for unemployed citizens.
However, Hydrofracting has cons as well:
1)Leads to contamination of the fresh water.
2)Chemicals and components like carcinogens might be found in contaminated water. These symptoms could lead to cancer.
3)It affects the water supply for many homes.
4)Does not protect the groundwater (which is basically one of the main sources of fresh water that the world has).
5)Has increased health problems in societies. For example increased the Asthma rate in Texas.
In New York State you could find Natural gases in the Marcellus shale. The Marcellas shale is upstate New York(South western part of the state) and contains around 485 trillion cubic feet of Natural gases underground. New York State uses about 1.1 trillion cubic feet of Natural gases a year.
This week in Environmental Science, Mr. Fox introduced Natural Gas. Natural gas is gas that mainly contains methane. Most of us are familiar with natural gas. We use natural gas most of the time when were at home. We use it to cook, heat things up etc... Methane is flammable as well. To get natural gas people do process called hydrofracking. Hydrofracking is a process in which you go deep underground, about 5 miles deep, pass water table, then into shale. Shale is what they penetrate through in order to extract natural gas in which has been preserved over millions of years. Most people believe that hydrofracking contaminates water, as the pipes penetrate the water table. Personally I think that it doesn’t. Most people who believe that hydrofracking is bad are hypocrites because they are against getting natural gas, and yet they use it every day of their lives. Notice that the United States uses the most energy in the world, and 25% of that energy is Natural Gas. Imagine us without natural gas, cold foods, cold winter nights, no warm water, and no hot coco for winter. I wouldn’t survive without natural gas. I do agree that there are some cons in hydrofracking. I do believe that hydrofracking does carry some sort of pollutions towards our water. When hydrofracking we use millions of gallons of water to extract natural gas from deep underground shale. So where does those millions of gallons of water go? Only they know what they “ACTUALLY” with it.
ReplyDeleteThis week in Environmental Studies, we learned lots about natural gases and the process called Hydrofracking. I learned that natural gases are fuel that we use for cooking and heating, and are primarily methane. It burns cleans cleaner, hotter, brighter than coal or oil and usually transported underground. These natural gases form as a result of dead things that are covered by mud, sand, and silt. The pressure from covering these dead things turns into fossil fuel which then turns into natural gas. Now, Hydrofracking is a process that involves the injection of more than a million gallons of sand and chemicals at high pressure down and across into horizontally drilled wells as far as 10,000 feet below the surface. The pressurized mixture causes the rock layer of the shale to crack. These fissures are held open by the sand particles so that natural gas from the shale can flow up the well.
ReplyDeleteLearning about hydrofracking this week was not only informal but it also made me think a lot about this process. Many people across the country debate on whether or not hydrofracking is a good idea. My personal stand on this issue is that I believe that hydrofracking is more risky than beneficial for our environment’s safety. I am looking forward to gathering more information about this issue and hydrofracking itself so that I can get prepared to write my position paper and use facts to put on paper.
