How do my actions impact my community, family, and city?
Reflect on this question. Use the following questions as a guide.
- Have your actions changed because of things you have learned in environmental science?
- Why or why not? Provide examples
- Do you live a sustainable life?
- Why or why not?
- What is one New Year's resolution you want to make that is related to the environment?
- Explain your choice.
This year I have learned that even though I am one person, my actions contribute to those of a greater whole. In learning this, I have tried to apply myself to living a better life style. This includes: Reducing the amount of water I use, reducing the amount of electricity I use, not buying bottled water, not littering, and recycling. Some of these I already do, such as not littering and recycling. However, everything else that I do is because I take advantage of my resources. Since I know I get water simply by turning a faucet, I am not always conscious about the fact that I use water excessively while there are others in the world that don’t even have water available for them to use. In a way, I think that the way I abuse water (Along with others) is very selfish. Instead of worrying about ourselves, we have to think as a unit. All of our actions eventually come together to make a big ball of harm towards our environment. Our sustainability levels are dropping and I fear for future generations who have to clean up OUR mess.
ReplyDeleteThat is why, for my new year’s resolution, I plan to abide by the other styles of healthy living. I have already stopped buying bottled water. This leaves me with reducing the amount of electricity I use and the amount of water that I use. I know that this will be tricky for me because those are the two things that I most definitely take advantage of. Recently, I have tried shutting off the lights in rooms that are unoccupied. However, sometimes I don’t do this because when my house is scary when I’m home alone. This is a bad habit that I know I must get rid of. Also, before I get in the shower, I let the hot water run for 10 minutes so that I can make the bathroom warm (during the winter). I have come to realize that my tactics are idiotic. Instead of waiting those 10 minutes, I could’ve just jumped in the shower from the beginning and by the time I would’ve gotten out, the bathroom would’ve already been warm.
Although other might think that it is simple to “just turn off the water” or to “just turn off the light”, it is a challenge that we, Americans, have been facing for quite some time. I feel like our generation has become subliminally addicted to having these resources at the palm of their hands. When I think back to third-world countries, I feel like their chances of survival during a time of crisis is much higher than if the U.S was to run out of water. We wouldn’t know what to do with our selves other than fight for the water we have left. Those in third-world countries find a way to work around their problems. I wouldn’t be able to say the same for Americans.
While learning in Environmental Science have learned that my actions on the environment do impact everything surrounding me an overwhelming amount. First of all, I learned that being part of the water bottle scam is hazardous and potentially deadly. It’s a danger to the individual aka, the environment, and society.
ReplyDeleteMy actions have changed a lot after learning about all the endangerment I was causing not only myself but the world. I stopped drinking and buying bottled water for the most part. The reason why is because I learned of a chemical that could potentially kill you , benzene, this chemical is in plastic water bottle waters and if you kept the water for a long time it could potentially led to cancer. I used to keep water bottles for long periods of time because I was too cheap to buy a new one the next morning or buy a reusable water bottle. But when I realized what keeping a water bottle for a long time could do to the human body I became extremely worried, which is natural for me because I'm a hypochondriac . Also knowing what they do with " recycled" water totally disgust me , how they dump it in some foreign country and just leave most of it there to deteriorate by burying layer on top of layers of dirt and "recycled " bottled was just appalling. And also when learning about what the companies like Poland Springs did to acquire the water, knowing that they took water from the towns people in a little town in Maine where that water was kind of like their only source of water was really unattractive.
I definitely live a more sustainable life now than I did before. I take more caution before doing things that could potentially harm something, I think twice about it and for the most part I ultimately decide not to do it. Like I said before I barely drink bottled water anymore and take more of a deliberate approach when dealing with anything having to do with the environment.
One new year's resolution that I have relating to Environmental Science is definitely being less ignorant about being "green." I there are still a lot of ways that I am harming this earth without knowing it and I just want to know to be a better citizen of the world and how to make earth a safer , greener, and healthier place for everyone to live in.
This year I'have learned a lot by working with my peers and other witch is a great thing because each of us are aiming for the same goal or similar goals. In Environmental science has impact everything soround me witch it helped me succeed in many ways. My mind change completely about environmental science because at first I thought it was gonna be hard but then I realize that anything is possible to do if you try. My actions changed because of things I have learned in environmental science like learning about bottle water and tap how they are. For example my actions changed in environmental science because I never knew that bottle water comes from tap and that's a big step for me because I never knew that so now I know what is bottle water. So this is a awesome thing to know because I know that people does't know the difference between tap water and bottle water but I know the difference because environmental science taught me that including Mr. Fox. People doesn't know the value of nothing like people need to take responsibility for themselves witch environmental science taught me how to recycled things in many ways but there's other people that doesn't recycled so environmental science taught me that if you don't recycled that's an impact to the environment in many ways. I live a more sustainable life now than I did before because environmental science taught me how to become more independent and take stuff seriously. For example if i go to the bathroom and I turned the lights on when I'm leaving the bathroom i need to tuned the lights off because that's not helping me and my family. One new year's resolution that i want to make is that i need to be more proactive and i want to learned more about environmental science like more information that i don't know. I want the earth to be greener and sustainable because if we don't keep the earth safe than there's gonna be problem and we want the earth be safe, healthy etc.
ReplyDelete~Marino A. Ventura(Environmental Science 4th period class)
Based on the things I have learned this year in Environmental Science, I feel like my actions have not changed. Even though I wish to become a better citizen, it is extremely difficult for me to change my ways for several reasons. First of all, even though I know I use 324 gallons of water a week as calculated in class, there is no possible way to for me to use less. If this happens, then I’m going to have to be aware of time and time is my biggest enemy. However, the problem with me not using less water is that I am not thinking of people in other parts of the world who see water as a commons. At the moment, I use the water and don’t even reflect on what any other person has because I am a New Yorker that has a busy schedule and can only be aware of others for so long. Furthermore, another reason why I believe my actions have not changed is because I have not stopped buying bottled water. Even though I know plastic is a harmful material that kills animals while also affecting human health, I still continue to buy plastic bottled products because it is accessible to me. The problem with this is that someday I am going to be taxed more than I am today and my only alternative will be to buy glassed products. Another reason why my actions have not changed is because I continue to see commercials that say that New York City has the best drinking water supply. As a New Yorker who has never been sick because of the water of course, I believe the commercial especially because of the music and expert testimony techniques that are used. Overall, my actions may change but not a lot in 2013 because I am still a fond believer that water in New York has a high quality compared to other states and countries I have been to.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, based on what I have learned this year in science, I think I live a sustainable life. Since my family is highly supportive of recycling, I now do it too. As shown in class, recycling is useful and any plastic or glass object goes in its separate bag than the garbage. I must say it is better since the materials are now organized. In addition, I live a sustainable life because I don’t have to search for what I need for hours such as water and materials suitable for making a home as in the Binayo story. I am glad that I live in New York and not in an area where my resources are scarce and where women are looked down upon if they don’t satisfy the expectations of those around them. This would just lead to my own downfall as gender inequality in terms of resource and services is something that makes me upset especially if it includes me.
One New Year’s resolution that I have in relation to the environment is to try and stop buying so much bottled water. I must convince myself that bottled water has phthalates that cause cancer and that bottled water also harm animals. I also chose this resolution because it seems reasonable to me as it is a change and sometimes changes can be good. Additionally, I chose this resolution because I am a fan of marine animals and it would make me feel guilty if I saw that all marine animals just constantly kept dying while the human population just keeps growing. This affects me and the environment because I happen to like animals more than people at times. In addition, this affects the environment because if animals are harmed by the materials in their aquatic environment then our food chain will be affected since the fish can get sick and make us sick. Therefore, personally I must change but if the U.S. doesn’t then everyone will suffer the consequences as no life will be left on Earth.

ReplyDeleteI don't think I have changed a lot because of what I have learned in environmental science. Before learning about bottle water bottles and tap water I already was used to drinking tap water. I probably haven't changed but I have tried to tell other people in my family about bottle water because I think we should take care of our environment. Some thing I did change was closing my faucet when is not in use. Letting water run for no reason is not sustainable for the next generation because we may run out of this natural source. I do think I have a sustainable life. I’m constantly recycling and now I also try to throw garbage in garbage cans around the city when I have it on my hands. In school I recycle since we have specially color bins to thrown away different garbage such as paper and cans or just food. I also I’m more careful in which bin I throw away my garbage because we're also making it easier for the recycling.
ReplyDeleteOne New Year's resolution I have is to try and convince my mother to stop buying boxes of bottle water and leaving them in the car. I will convince my mom to do this because a we may know the chemicals of the plastic start getting in the water after a certain while and the sun hitting the bottle is not that good neither. This is also very unsustainable and unhealthy , since it contains chemicals of benzene which is a cancerous chemical use to create the plastic bottles. Another new year's resolution is to recycle more in my house since we've stop separating the plastics from the regular stuff. Lastly, I think one new years resolution is to try and convince the people near me about going green and actually give them examples as to why we should m no just tell them.
My actions impact my fmily andmy commuty in many ways because of everyting i have learn in enviermental science because thethigs of water was really durty wish i think my stepdad thinks bottel of water is way better then tap not cool.
ReplyDeleteI dont think i livea sustanabul life because my family is still using thinks that soe times dont excaly go with the inverment in a way but sometimes i could be clad that i use thinks from the invirement.
One new year resolution i want to make is that i can make my stepdad drink some tap water because the only water he seems to like is bottel when he thinks he is drinkong spring water when he is drinking wter from the house wish is really bwired i really dont know o well that is the only change i wanna make.

DeleteMy actions as a whole, don’t always impact my family and my community. But what I have learned in Environmental Science has changed my individual actions. Although the majority of the time, I used to drink tap water, a few exceptions were made when I was “on the go”. Throughout my soccer season, I drank bottled water because I was always running late and forgetting my water at home. I was basically forced to purchase water bottles from the store, even if I knew it wasn’t the most ideal choice. However, after learning what truly happens to all that plastic, I decided to purchase a BPA free bottle and just make sure to remember to refill the bottle with water from the tap at home. I also took my mother’s advice and began using reusable bags. Some may be surprised, but not only are they wonderful because they do not harm the environment, but they come in different colors and designs, and in a way, help lift the weight of all the items purchased. Before, I used to come home out of breath because I had to carry a dozen of plastic heavy bags, and now I only need less than three reusable bags, where I can carry everything I need without hurting my arms or the environment.
ReplyDeleteAs of right now, I think I am still not living a sustainable life. It’s evident that I am in the process, but I have yet to come to success. Although I no longer purchase plastic bottles and I replaced plastic bags with reusable bags, I still do a couple of things that hurt the environment. At home, I do not recycle like I know I should and I do not encourage my family to recycle either. I also take really long showers knowing that other family members need to shower as much as I do. In other parts of the world, there are people who are lucky to have enough water to even shower twice a week. But, at times, I am selfish and just worry about myself and my needs. If I fix my recycling and water usage problems, then perhaps along with the other positive things I do, I may live a sustainable life then.
One New Year’s resolution I want to make that is related to the environment, is to fix my recycling problems. For next year, I want to attempt and (hopefully succeed) in recycling. It may seem as a silly thing, but I think even just one family makes a difference. I know that if I start recycling, perhaps my parents will too and so will my sisters. Then if we recycle, our neighbors will follow and just like the domino effect, more individuals will recycle and care about the environment like we do.
This year environmental science has played a very interesting role in my life I say interesting because it has caused changes in my life that commercials and other types of advertisements failed to do. Before the class I tried hard but not as hard as I do now to live a sustainable life. Before I would always use my bike or the train or bus as a source of transportation instead of using private cars. In school I would also try not to waste a lot of paper. Now from taking environmental science I recycle more, also after I collect a good amount of bottles in my house I take them to the machine to exchange them for money. I also now watch the amount of water I used because I know the world is running in very low amounts of water that is drinkable. I also tell my friends who drink bottle water that they are wasting their money when they could easily drink tap water that is very safe. I’m basically promoting NYC tap water to people who think its unsafe to drink it or to those who don’t know that NYC has the cleanest tap water. Now with all the changes I made plus the ones I was all ready doing before I feel like I live sustainable life. I’m trying reduce the amount of plastic and garbage on the world so future generations could have a cleaner world that does not have its oceans full with plastic and its streets full with garbage. Even though I feel like I all ready live a sustainable life I still want to keep making improvements on the amount of sustainability in my life. For New Year’s my goal is to keep on recycling and also to stop using so much plastic. I’m going to try and convince my mom to stop taking plastic bags from the supermarkets. Also when I purchase something from local grocery markets I’m going to tell them not to give me a bag if I could carry the items on my hand or book bag. When we were reading in class how long it actually takes plastic to disappear I was shocked. It takes 10 years for a plastic bag to completely dissolve. The crazy part is that all that unwanted plastic ends up on the oceans and eventually inside the fish that we eat. So my new year’s resolution is for me and my family not to use as much plastic.

ReplyDeleteThe things I have learned in environmental science have been interesting. The things I have learned have helped me take on a new perspective on the environment and my interaction with it. The first big concept we learned was sustainability. Living sustainable is essential for the preservation of the environment for us and the future generations. Knowing this I had to alter my lifestyle to take into account the environment, I had to limit my use of resources. Another thing I learned that widened my understanding was learning about bottled water. Learning about bottled water helped me develop a negative perspective on bottled water. Having learned this I have to limit the use of bottled water and use fewer things that have plastic. Limiting the use of plastic would help the environment. The preservation and protection of the environment are major reasons to change my actions.
As compared to prior taking environmental science I think that I have improved on my sustainable lifestyle. The first step for me to move towards a sustainable life was learning about the concept sustainability. After estimating our personal water usage I was a little surprised at the results. This made me realize that I could try to lower my water usage. I knew that I could attempt to reduce my water usage in areas like brushing my teeth and showering. I thought that this would not be so difficult, but it was hard to make these changes, I have had more success in reducing my water usage while brushing my teeth than in showering. In addition, my attempt to use less plastic has not made much success. Overall, my attempt to a sustainable life has made some steps in the right direction, but there is still room for improvement.
An environment related New Year’s resolution I want to make is to live more sustainable. I can do this by reducing my water usage in a few areas and actually accomplishing this. Using less plastic and trying to recycle more. It will be a challenging change, but the benefit to the environment will be enormous. Some of the damage to the environment cannot be reversed, but it could be contained so that it does not get worse. My actions along with those of many others will help make a positive impact on the environment.
I feel that some of my actions have changed but I haven’t made any dramatic changes on my life. For instance, I try not to let the water run when brushing my teeth like I used to ever since we estimated how many gallons of water every day. Also, I have stopped letting the water run for long periods of time before I get into the shower. I feel that has cut down my water use by a lot since I tend to let water run simply because I like the calming sound of running water. I suppose I could just record the sound and listen to it. That way, I would get the calming sound I love while saving water.
ReplyDeleteI believe that I do not live as much of a sustainable life as I should because I feel that I do waste a lot of things even though I know I shouldn’t. As mentioned before, I often let the water run unnecessarily. Additionally, my family always buys bottled water and hardly ever drink from the tap. Not only that, but I feel that I waste too much energy as well. I also tend to leave lights on despite the fact that there isn’t anyone in the room. I get forgetful when it comes to things like that. But I try my best to turn the lights off after I leave the room if I know that no one else is going to be in there.
Therefore, my environmental related New Year’s Resolution is to make more sustainable decisions. For instance, I would stop letting the water run, in cases like showering and washing dishes, drink more tap water, and turn lights off that aren’t in use. I chose this resolution because I feel that those things are the root of my unsustainable life. Plus, it always made me feel bad when I let the water run when I’m not using it. I always felt that I was wasting water but it wasn’t until I learned about water usage in class that I understood the true waste that came with letting the water run.
The same goes for plastic bottles. The biggest impact on me was seeing the plastic bits in the fish. I personally like eating fish so to see that came as a shock to me. I never thought about where plastic went unless it was recycled; then I assumed it was actually recycled. By buying less plastic bottles and using less water, I feel that I can help the planet and decrease the damage done to it over the years.
Learning what I’ve learned in the Environmental Science course has impacted my life by a fair amount. During the first few week of class, our discussion was based on what being sustainable meant and what was the exact definition of that word. Since we have expanded our knowledge on our environment, I have developed somewhat the definition of being sustainable. For example, we thought recycling and picking up after ourselves outside was having a sustainable when in reality that was just the basics, the beginning. Learning about Bottled water and how much water we were wasting per minute while showering, brushing your teeth, and other personal things made me think about what sustainability really meant and how I should apply the information gained in my life. Learning that Tap Water and Bottled Water are similar in many ways and that Tap Water might even be much safer than Bottled Water made me think about the ever buying bottled water again. Personally, I was shocked and amazed at the same time. I even informed my mom about how the purchase of bottled water was pointless because it’s not any special than Bottled Water; it’s just filtered tap water. The way the Bottled water was made really concerned me. It got me thinking about how I needed to buy a bottle that was BPA free, something that I did accomplish. This demonstrates that learning about new things helped me apply something else to my life that is sustainable. Throughout my journey of course, I have realize that you can’t really ever be fully sustainable, there will always be something new you learn and might want to add on to your life making it more sustainable than what it is.
ReplyDeleteMy new year's resolution, relating to Environmental class would be starting with the basics recycling and not littering in the streets. Just thinking of my love for penguins would help me rethink twice before making the wrong decision of throwing that plastic paper on the ground, even though it’s the smallest piece ever. My life hasn’t been that sustainable at all, I’ve tried to add on what I learned in class to life, but it isn’t that easy to just change your habits and what your family are used to doing. Starting out small will help me and hopefully inspire others like my mom to make the decision to stop following the tradition society wants to maintain among people for the purpose of capitalism, and change the ways of being. My new year’s resolution is not only to change the way I’m living life, but as well persuade people that what I have become will help our earth’s beauty last longer for all future generations to see. More individuals need to understand what is happening to our environment every time we act carless towards it. Knowledge is power, and if we’re not using what we’ve learned In class to the outside world, which am sure is the plan, then it’s futile having access to all that information.
This year, I have learned that my impact on the environment is just as great as the impact of everyone else. Despite the fact that I have learned so much this year in Environmental Science, I feel as though my actions haven’t changed as much as I had hoped they would. I have made slight changes. For example, although I occasionally purchase water bottles, I don’t rely on them as much as I used to. I haven’t completely switched to drinking tap water, in fact, I still don’t drink it at all, but I want that to change. Also, I’ve tried brushing my teeth without letting the water run. I forget to turn the faucet off sometimes but when I do remember, I only let the water run when necessary. Additionally, I continue to use my low flow showerhead and toilet to reduce how much water I consume. However, since my changes haven’t been consistent in general, I definitely want to improve.
ReplyDeleteAs of now, I don’t think my life is as sustainable as it could be. When it comes to napkins or paper, I use an excessive amount, even if I don’t really need it all. I still love taking long, hot showers and recycling is something I give no thought to. Even though I do abstain from littering, my efforts towards being “eco-friendly” aren’t great. I have learned about several things I can do to help decrease the negative impact I have on the environment such as drinking from a reusable bottle instead of a plastic one, cutting down my shower time, and recycling paper and containers. Although all of this sounds easy, actually doing them isn’t as simple. I feel as if I still need more motivation to actually do what I say I will; only then I can say I am living sustainably.
For this reason, my resolution for next year is to be more “green.” Two of my main goals will be to conserve energy and improve my recycling habits. I can conserve energy by unplugging or turning off any devices I don’t need or am not currently using. In terms of my recycling habits, I want to get used to separating my plastics, papers and metals, and encourage my family to join in too. Although these are just small steps, all efforts count towards decreasing our negative impact on the environment. If I start getting used to the ideas of recycling and conserving, I’ll keep these habits throughout my life and will make a small change in the world. If we want to conserve our resources for future generations, we need to start somewhere and I feel like these goals are simple, yet effective. Besides, I think a small change is better than no change at all.
Base on this year my action have change so far in environmental science because now my knowledge have expanded ever since the first few week of class, our discussion on what being sustainable ment for a example you can be sustainable by not turning of the water when we are not using it when you are brushing your teeth or washing dishes and how much water we our wasting every per minute while showering. Also a few week ago we have been talking about how NYC tap water is safe and healthy to drink because NYC tap water is tested ever 10,000 times per year and people should not waste there money on bottle water because they can save lots of there money that they use to bye bottle water NYC water is drinkable.
ReplyDeleteI say that i dont really live a sustainable life because i do every thing the opposed of being sustainable because i take really long shower and leave the water running to get the water worm or when im brushing my teeth i leave the water running for 3 minute when im really not using it i usally do this evey day but i trying to work on it and time my self.
One New Year's resolution you want to make that is related to the environment is to try and stop buying so much bottled water and try to convince people to not buy bottle water and tell them where do they think the bottle water goes after they are done using it because it effect sea life.
ELLISON LUGO
During my time this year in Environmental Science, I feel as if many of my actions have indeed changed from what I had learned in class. Although I have always been environmentally conscious and aware of what things I am doing to the environment through the things I do throughout the day, by learning about things like how plastic bottles harms our waterways, or why it is important for us to conserve water, I was able see that this class had helped me go in depth on why I am always making sure to do so and why it is important to do so. From the very beginning, I knew that I had been using too much water, and decided that that would be one of the major things I would have to work on after calculating my water usage in class. Ever since then, I have made sure to not leave the water running while I’m brushing my teeth and taking shorter showers in an effort to use less water. Additionally, I have made sure to use less plastic water bottles and drink tap water instead.
ReplyDeleteEven though I believe that I act sustainable, I wouldn’t say that I live a completely sustainable life. There are always going to be times where I leave the water running for too long, leave the lights on in a room where I’m not in, or forget to recycle something. Because I am attempting to avoid doing these things, I feel that I will eventually reach the point where I can definitely say that I am living a sustainable life. All I need to do is make sure that whatever I am doing at a certain time is benefiting my environment, and that I am able to make sure that I can continue any activities that help me stay sustainable.
For my New Year's Resolution, I want to be able to become more sustainable, and eventually stay as sustainable as I can. I feel that it is important for me to learn how to improve my current efforts towards helping the environment so that I can attempt to discover new ways to live sustainably. In my efforts to do so, I also hope to motivate those around me to become sustainable, especially if they are not used to being eco-friendly. I would also want to be able to encourage myself to purchase products that I would be able to use multiple times, instead of constantly buying things that I would just throw away after one use, eventually becoming an addition to a landfill. I wish to be able to do all of these things because I truly care about how I am affecting the world around me. It is important to me that I am able to take care of the environment in any way I can, especially since it seems that with every passing moment, the Earth is just slowly deteriorating more and more.
After having learned this entire year in science insightful thing about tap water, bottle water and the environment in environmental science, some of my actions have changed. For example I try to use my reusable water bottle as much as I can instead of plastic water bottles. This was a quick change for me at first because I carried my water almost everywhere I go, but there are still times when I have to buy a water bottle for various reasons. After I do buy a water bottle I try to make sure that it gets recycled by putting in one of the blue bins or taking it to a deposit center. I believe that these small choices would help me live a more sustainable life because I’m slowly trying to decrease the amount of plastic I use to only use the amount that I need to. That is also helping the amount of water that I use every day because plastic water bottles need to be transported and use water to clean them. Overall this helps me create a more sustainable life because I am only using the resources that I need to use. That is what living sustainably is to only use the resources necessary so that future generations have them as well. My major New Year’s resolution is to act more serious towers everything, this would relate to the environment because I would take things about the environment more seriously. Especially my actions that affect the environment even though I’m only one person but my actions can influence others to change their lifestyle and have similar actions. This is like a chain reaction because one person’s action can influence others and those around them. This is my New Year’s resolution because I’m about to enter college this year where I would have to make my own choices about my lifestyle and I want them to be the best that they can be.
ReplyDelete1. My actions this year have not really changed, although I try to change my habits I continue to do the same things I use to. I still buy water bottle in the store and yes I notice what I’m doing however I feel like it’s a easy way for I can get a drink when I’m outside and thirsty. Yet my family and I do recycle our bottles at home, we also tend to reuse as well the bottles and use them for home water bottles, which we apply tap water into. When I do buy water bottles in the stores I do stop and really think about it though and clearly what come to my mind is what my classmates and I learned about water bottles vs. tap water in science. I know Tap water is much safer and better I tasted the difference and I know its free in my own home. However what mainly makes me buy water bottle is trying not to carry around a reusable water bottle Don’t know I’m kind of picky with what I carry around. I think I don’t live a sustainable life. My reasons are because I don’t cherish the small amount of supply the earth offers. I’m one of those people that increase the landfill rate and that maybe even send plastic to the Atlantic Ocean. I know this is very negative and such things will happen to our planet if I continue to be one of those people. My new years resolution therefore will be to try to carry at least a small water bottle, and try to decrease landfills and plastic waste in our oceans. I know this will not only help our generation but those to come too. I really don’t want our planet to end up like what happen in the borax so I’m start with my own seed and make a difference in 2013 and use my knowledge from Environment Science.
ReplyDeleteEnviromental science has helped me change the way I treat my enviroment in many ways. One of this way would be the consumption of tap water. The consumption of clean fresh water is a mayor problem in New York because many people just waist water in abundance and than it just make more work for the water treatment plants that from time to time get flooded and have to dump waste water they cant treat in to the ocean polluting the water.
ReplyDeleteI believe I have a sustainable life because lately i been using plans and skills before doing anything in my life specially when it comes to the environment like trying to go green more like using a bike instead of car.
One new years resolution i would say im going to try to put to work is to stop buying bottle water because is just polluting our environment and is the same tap water we drink.
So far this year things I have learned in enviroment science has changed what I used to do that might hurt my enviroment. For example before i used to loiter in the streets. But after learning that when it rains, garbage in the streets get washed up and up in our rivers. So after learning about this i think twice before loitering and just throw away at the corner trash cans. In my opinion I do live in a substainable life because we do things like reserve our water and when we use it we do clean it so we can be able to reuse it again. In some i dont live in a substainable life because we cut down trees and dont replace them , we also use plastic and companies say they recycle plastic bottles but most of them end up in places like the backyard of people in India. So we somewhat dont and dont live a substainable life. My new years resolution is to graduate in january and get more serious about my work.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the things i learned in class have helped me in my daily life because before plastic water bottles was a waste to me but now re using them helps the enviornment more bevause its using up less plastic and hurting our world. I think I live a sustainiable life cause whenever something i know is wrong like leaving plugged in chargers and other eletrical things i do with it including saying it around the house but also trying to presever special things that might work in the future. One new years revolution is nothing because they techinically never work out for me so i pay no mind to them i just do with what i can and let everything happen on its own, but if something does happen ill follow in what i would want to do. But if theres is one i would do is stop littering so much cause i use to barley do it but now i do it on a constant bases which i need to stop.
ReplyDeleteMy actions in environmental Science has changed the way I think because I've learned the difference between tap water and bottled water. Which clearly proves that tap water is in fact better than bottled water. It has brought to my attention that we do waste a lot of money buying bottled water. Many people don't recycle, and many of those bottles end up in our oceans and rivers. One example, in New York City, the safest water is tap water. Many people enjoy tap water more than anything. Others buy bottled, because they're are lazy and are fully aware that after they finish the bottle, they can just throw it away.
ReplyDeleteI do not live a sustainable life because, I really didn't know much in how it can affect me and my community. Now I've learned how to be sustainable. Now everything will change for me, because I will start recycling and will try to keep everyone around me sustainable, so the community could be greener. It's going to be hard for me, because I've never been sustainable, and no that i'm willing to change my life style to become sustainable, it will become a challenge
for me, But I will be sustainable.
My New Years resolution is to waste less energy. I will do that by turning off any electronics that i'm not using. For example instead of leaving a light on, i'll make sure the lights will be turned off when I leave my room.
This year my change towards beings more environmentally friendly became a challenge, as I grew up with the habits to be non-conservative of the resources, such as water, I never knew what little amount of fresh water we had left. After I knew that only 3% of the Earth’s water is drinkable, I changed in a miniscule way towards conserving water. Now I do the small things that help conserve as much water for our future, for example I turn off the water faucet when I do not need it, I replaced the high water consuming water appliances with a more efficient ones. Doing the small things now makes me secure the idea that I have improved in terms of being sustainable, although there are numerous things before I am truly environmentally friendly.
ReplyDeleteAt this point, I do consider myself more sustainable than I used to be. I say that because I have new methods of saving water and polluting the planet less. In previous years I had a very unbreakable habit of using tap water very inefficiently, like taking 20-25 minute showers. Now I cut down my time to 15 minute showers. This is a very small step but it insures the effort is being done over time to eventually be more sustainable. Adding on, I recently bought a refillable water bottle in school, this will ensure that I will save myself a dollar from buying a plastic water bottle that eventually the plastic will end up in the ocean.
As 2012 comes to an end, I want to see myself growing awareness of the water we currently have and preserving it. I have actually been interested in community service to clean up parks and to help clean nearby rivers. This is a goal that will help me and the community be more aware of how many problems the environment suffers because of humanity and help any type of aquatic animals thrive by cleaning rivers. Although I have been sluggish this year, I feel like this goal for the year 2013 is a motive for me to be more aware of the environment and helps me be more active in general.
Unfortunately, my actions have not changed because of the things I learned in Environmental Science. I'm still as unsustainable as I was on the first day of 11th grade. Changing my ways would be too much of an inconvenience, and I try to avoid inconveniences as they are not in my best interests. I've learned all the potential negative impacts of my current actions on the environment and certain ecosystems however, it is quite difficult to see these impacts and it's difficult to think about the future of the planet so it is hard for me to change.
ReplyDeleteI believe that I do not live a sustainable life. The most unsustainable thing about my life is probably how I use. Now, I don't use much water compared to some other people in my Environmental Science, but I definitely can use less if I wanted to. For example, when I brush my teeth, I leave the water running for the entire 2-3 minutes and only really use it for a couple of seconds to rinse. I probably waste about 2 gallons or more everyday, twice a day, just by doing that. Then there's the issue of the shower. I leave the water running for many minutes as I try to find the perfect temperature. And then when I don't need to use the water, I still leave it running. I bet I waste plenty of gallons of water that could've been saved.
My New Year's Resolution would be to turn off the water when I'm not using it. I bet I could save many gallons/day by simply doing that. Fresh water is not an unlimited resource, so it is important to conserve it as best you can.
Yes indeed my actions have change because of what I learn in my Environmental Science class.I don't buy bottle water anymore because of the harmful plastic that is thrown into the ocean. The landfills full of PET plastics. These Plastics are made of oils that aren't organic and can't decompose. We are left with piles of landfills that harms the world. So I don't drink bottle water and go for the tap water that is provided to about every single home to America.
ReplyDeleteMy New years resolution is to brush my teeth without the water running. It sounds silly but in the long run by cutting my water usage there be more water to go around. It might not seem too much but compare to the women in Africa that we learned about, how they walk to water holes every morning and carry jugs of water under the hot sun made me become more considerate about others in the world. So I would try to make that and stick with it for the rest of my life.
My actions have changed because of things I learned in environmental science. Before taking environmental science I used to take really long showers because I thought that our water supply was near limitless. However, in environmental science I learned that this was far from the truth. I had no idea that only 1% of the Earth's water is drinkable and I feel guilty for wasting our water supply on unnecessarily long showers. When I wash my hands I make sure to do it quickly, and I try to time my showers so that I can stay clean, but help save the environment. What I really find interesting about the actions I am taking now are that they are simple things that anyone could do. If everyone on the planet took a brief environmental science course they would change their actions too. It isn't like saving water requires a huge sacrifice. Environmental science also taught me to take recycling seriously. I used to think that recycling was a hassle, but now I understand that if I don't recycle my garbage it could end up in gyres. My laziness could in turn result in the death of a sea creature that unknowingly eats my trash. When I eat fish I could very well be consuming trash that other individuals failed to recycle. This is why I make sure that my family recycles. Environmental science taught me how to make a difference in the environment and now I can use this knowledge to teach others how to make a difference the environment as well. Therefore, my actions have the potential to inspire others in my family, and community to participate in eco-friendly practices as well.
ReplyDeleteI live a sustainable life because I recycle, I try not to waste water, and I respect the environment by not doing things like littering. However, I think that I could always be more sustainable because I still use a lot of electricity. Now that I am thinking about it I could try to watch less television and I could I also try to complete my homework assignments faster so that I use my computer for a smaller amount of time. You can never be to sustainable.
My New Year's Resolution for the environment is to not buy a single bottle of water. I decided to make this my resolution because it is something that I could track easily, but it will also test my will power. When summer comes up and I find myself without water I will be very tempted to buy bottled water, but I am confident that I can resist this urge. This resolution isn't a big deal, but if everyone on the planet refused to buy bottled water for one year we could save money and the environment. If I want other people to be eco-friendly, I need to be eco-friendly myself. My actions have the potential to save the environment and if I can motivate others to follow my lead I can ensure future generations a nice planet to live on.
My actions have changed a bit because of what I have learned in environmental science. First of all, I don’t buy water bottles anymore. It’s not like I ever really was a big fan of water bottles but now I make sure to bring my reusable bottle with me everywhere I go so that I never need to buy a bottle. Another thing that I’m working on now is not throwing everything down the drain or toilet because now I know how hard people work to get our wastewater clean. I never thought of this as a big deal until I actually got to see for myself how complex of a process it is to cleanse wastewater so that we don’t die from waterborne diseases. I feel like the least that I can do to repay the people who do is by making their job a little easier and not throw away garbage with my water. The things that I have learned in this class have showed me how to become a nicer person to this planet.
ReplyDeleteI think that because of what I’ve learned I am now living a more sustainable life but of course I think it will still be hard for me to be fully sustainable. I still do a lot of things, like taking really long showers and leaving the water running sometimes, that are not sustainable at all. But nonetheless, I am proud of the changes I have made in my life. I used to be really un-sustainable but I’ve learned that even small changes can make a big difference. Getting a reusable water bottle can save me a lot of money per year and save the planet. I always thought it was hard and expensive to be sustainable but now I have a lot of resources from what I’ve learned in class in order to keep getting more and more sustainable in easy ways.
My new year’s resolution for 2013 is to take shorter showers. My biggest problem with being sustainable is that I waste too much water. I use up a lot of unnecessary amounts of water especially in the shower for no reason. It seems really ridiculous to me that I take an hour to shower when I could honestly just take about 10-15 minutes. It’s not going to be very easy for me since I’m so used to taking my time in the shower but I’m going to have to remember each time that it’s not necessary to take that long and that it’s all around a better decision to shorten my shower time. There’s a lot of other things that I could make my new year’s resolution but I chose the one that is most difficult because this way, I will be more motivated and in the end I will feel more proud of myself for getting over something that was difficult for me.
So far from most of the things that I've learned in Environmental Science, I've already been doing and has become like a habit to me. I always been an anti bottled water person and would always want to drink tap because I believed it was safer and less expensive.
ReplyDeleteI in most part don't live a very sustainable life, because of all the gallons of water that I take for granted when I'm watching dishes and more in particular when showering. I do this because it's become much of a habit since I was young and can't break easily Even though I do recycle it still doesn't excuse the fact how I misuse water. One New Year' resolution that I want to make related to the environment is how I use the water in my house. It's a habit that needs to be broken to live a more sustainable life and I'm determined to work hard to stop it.
My actions toward the environment haven’t changed much. I have learned much in environmental science that wished I learned it before. If I learned it before I wouldn’t have any difficultly with changing, but being used to the same routine it’s hard to change. When I learned something new that needed to change, I done it in the first couple of days and after that, I was back with my routine. Like the time we learned the amount of water we use each day, and as a class we tried to figure a way to use less water when we take showers. I used the plan for few days of taking a shower in 5 minutes of less and after that I went to taking showers longer than 5 minutes of even 10 minutes.
ReplyDeleteI feel in some ways I do live in a sustainable life, and then there some other ways we don’t have that life. I live in a substantial life because I see there are few people in the community that actually cares about what occurs around. Some of my family members try to be sustainable. But it’s not easy and will take a long time to change. I haven’t been successful at changing my life style even though I keep saying to myself to change. I’m used to the same routine. But there’s something I’m changing to a sustainable life like buying less bottled water, because every time I went to play soccer I would buy a new bottle water and that’s just a waste of money.
My New Year’s resolution to the environment is one obvious one, which is to use more reusable bottle water so I could start saving water. But the big one is to use less water especially when it comes to showers because the use of water I use is outrageous and would hurt the environment some way and could affect us. Having to change my ways of using water I could save around 50-100 gallons of water a day.
So far in environmental science I feel that my actions have changed due to the things I have learned over the past few months. They have made me realize the actions in my community and society that I should take in order to have a positive outcome in the future. environmental class has opened my eyes and has made me change in the sense that I have knowledge on how the environment in which I live in works and what are the things harming it, and making it better. For example I know that when I contribute to throwing garbage in the streets that causes more work for the people that work at treatment plants. I also know that it’s healthier and wiser to drink water from the tap and use renewable bottles when in New York City because, it has one of the healthiest and cleanest water systems. The information taught in environmental science is information that can be remembered forever because its information that helps you understand not only New York City but every community and city and places where people live. These past months have helped me understand more what living a sustainable life is really like. I have become more cautious of how I live my life. I have grown more aware of how much water I use, and keep my family in check when they don’t recycle, or throw trash in the garbage. I would say that a New Year resolution that I have for myself would be to try and limit the amount of water I use when in the shower, and while doing the dishes and brushing my teeth. I tend to forget that water is not something that magically appears to my building and I have learned to admire it and use it wisely and if that means cutting down the amount I use then I will do that. I also will try to maybe help out more in my community maybe like trying to help out in Inwood and high bridge park, just so that I know that I contributed good to my community and the environment around it and that will make me feel good.
ReplyDeleteMy Actions this year it haven't change that much but i have change my habits which i stop, buying bottled water because in Enviromental Science i have learned that bottled water company seduce us to keep buying their products which all those plastic bottled lead to the oceans that cause of marine animals to die. My family and I are working on recycling bottles at home. I Believe that tap waster is fresher and safer than bottled water even thought that bottled water is the same as tap water the only differents is the plastic that release chemicals to the water which led to sickness and diseases. My New Years resolution is to try to inform other people to keep our environment clean and healthy for our next generations. Also to put our the word out there for people to start recycling bottles.

Yes. Environmental science is a class that taught me many lessons about the life I’m living and the way I’m living my life. I’ve changed as a person because this class has taught me that decisions I make in my everyday life influence the world I live in and has impacted the way I think about the world from a sustainable perspective. Even though the class gave me access to a more sustainable view of things, I am going to start focusing on putting the things I learned to practice and live in favor of my environment. It’s logical to treat your home kindly, so I intend on doing so. I think I did an amazing Prezi presentation based on the terrible things about bottled water and I’m going to focus on that first, so I’m going to buy a thermos when I get the chance, reduce the amount of bottled water I purchase. This year I’m not going to become the star example of overall sustainable perfection, but I am going to start aiming for that goal by making small changes.
ReplyDeleteSo far because of the things that I learned this year in environmental science the action that I used to do have changed because now I think about the amount of things that I do can hurt the world just the same amount as the other person. Also because of the action that I take can hurt someone else dying adlos because even though I know that because I think that if I stop doing one thing it will help another person it won’t but it stays In my mind that I overuse something that some people die to have. My action have changed because now I don’t use the same amount of energy as I used to also I try to use less Plastic bottles because of the marine life that have died because our actions. I think that now I live a sustainable life because I don’t only think about myself and I also think about how we can’t live without energy. My New Year resolution that connect to enviormental science is to continnue using less bottle water and to get people to stop wasting their money on something that they can get for free from their own home. Also to recycle more not only because it’s the law but because it benefits myself and other and you can even get some your money back in some places so it kinda worth it.
ReplyDeleteThis year I have learned about sustainability in environmental science. This thought of future generations not having our recourse because of actions being taken in the present, makes me think about how much do I really need a bottle of water or how much time it takes out of my life just to go and recycle. Every since I learned about the damage we are causing to the environment, I think three times before buying a bottle of water and I ask myself how bad do I need it. The other day I Went to my uncles house and I asked him for some water and he came back with a bottle of water. I returned it and told him the information on bottled water. At the end of the conversation all you could hear him repeat was “damn these water companies played me”. He then vowed to never buy a bottle of water again. I then told him about how that's not the solution to instead go out and spread the word to his friends and to start recycling. Personally I feel like I try to be sustainable but some times I just back to my old habits. I think I am so use to buying a bottle of water when ever I am thirsty that its hard just to stop. This year I wanna stop being so use to buying a bottle of water every time I get a little urge of thirst. Especially in the summer. I also want to spread the word to more people about bottle waters.

I personally don’t think that my actions have changed a lot because of things I have learned in environmental science because it takes time to change ones actions or beliefs on something. However, this does not mean that I do not want to have some actions changed because of the things I’ve learned in environmental science. So far in environmental science, I’ve learned that water is a common, something that everyone needs. Additionally, I’ve learned that tap water is cheaper and better than plastic water for both a citizen and a community. Indeed, I have stopped buying bottled water and instead I got used to drinking from a reusable water bottle with filtered water inside.
ReplyDeleteI think that I live a partially sustainable life because I don’t sustain everything. However, I do try to use less electricity. For example, when I’m not in my room I turn the light off because there is no point on having the light on if it’s not being used. I have to keep in mind that if I want other generations to live off the same resources I did, I have to start living sustainably.
One New Year’s Resolution I want to make that is related to the environment is to stop drinking water from bottled water for good because it would not only benefit me but my surroundings. This means that there will be a decrease in the littering statistics because bottled water would not be so highly populated if people start drinking tap water. Knowing that plastic bottled water contains “benzene” which leads to cancer when water is left in the bottled water for a long time, makes me not want to keep buying bottled water. All of these choices I make will help me become a scientifically literate citizen for the rest of my life.
My actions towards the environment have slightly changed since learning all that we learned over the past few months about water. I always used to preserve water, like when brushing my teeth, to protect the environment. But when I learned about the origin of bottled water, one big change was stopping to purchase and consume bottled water. Especially after learning about the bottle bill; making a deposit, and not getting your money back unless you return the plastic doesn't seem like something I want to do. Not buying bottled water will benefit the pockets of my family and protect the city with major decrease in plastic pollution. In preventing in buying bottled water and limiting water use, one can live a sustainable lifestyle, and I now live a sustainable lifestyle. One thing I would like to do in this new year is to get a portable bottle, and use it to only consume water from my home filter, and take it everywhere I go. Like that, not only would I be healthier if I have easy access to water, but I would not have to waste money buying any type of bottled beverage.
ReplyDeleteSince the beginning of the year the question of sustainability and how to achieve this has been in place. I feel that everyone has an impact on our community, some may have more of an impact then others but we all contribute to possibility of earth’s demise. I feel I have made a slight change because of what I’ve learned. I used to buy a plastic bottle everyday in the morning but now I’ve actually started to stop because I saw that it wasn’t necessarily a need but just a want. Also the other day I went with my aunt to buy supplies for her son and she bought the 24 pack water bottle. I started explaining to her the disadvantages of buying water bottles and the truth under the label. She still bought the pack and didn’t believe me due to what she has been brought up to believe and said that bottled water is safer. I don’t think I don’t live a sustainable life because I still buy water bottles and I still misuse water at times. Even though I don’t do it as frequently I still do it and is helping fill the landfills. My new year’s resolution is to stop buying water bottles because I still do it. I think the way to start this New Year’s resolution is by buying a reusable bottle. I feel that this is an achievable resolution and if more people did it would really make a difference in the wallets of company owners, our wallets, and more importantly on our environment.

My actions have not necessarily changed because of the things I have learned in environmental science but I have learned many things that I was unaware of before. For example I didn't know that tap water was so healthy and clean, before I thought that bottled water was cleaner, and that the plastic from the bottle may contain chemicals that increase one's risk of getting cancer. Additionally I didn't know that New York City's tap water is tested so frequently and there is a Waste Water Treatment Plant where water that contains wastes is disinfected. I believe I somewhat live a sustainable life because I turn off lights when they are not being used and I try not to litter. I am not sustainable when it comes to garbage because I don't recycle or sort my garbage in categories like plastics. A New Year's resolution I want to make that is related to the environment is using reusable bottles because tap water is very safe and clean especially since I have a filter in my home and know that the water bottled industry is making us pay for a source that we can basically get for free. Furthermore because tap water is a privilege we have since people around the world don't have access to water the way we do and must struggle in order to get water, that is sometimes contaminated.
ReplyDeleteMy actions have changed slightly because of what I have learned in environmental science. I have realized how unique and important of substance water is. Fresh water is only 2.5% of the world’s water and many people don’t have easy access to fresh water. Yet we tend pollute our water with plastic, which takes years to decompose. This plastic tend harms our marine life and can harm us when we eat seafood that has ingested the plastic. Knowing these facts has made me want to properly dispose of plastic objects of any kind. The step to this is that I have stopped dropping my plastic bottles on the street instead of the garbage cans.
ReplyDeleteI believe my life still isn’t sustainable. A lot of the products in my house aren’t environmentally friendly. I have a lot of electrical appliances that don’t have an energy saver mode and this makes me believe it can have a negative impact to the environment. . I also still haven’t been able to lower the amount of water I use regularly to a sustainable amount. It is hard to kick old habits but attempt whenever I can. For instance when I take showers I am more aware of the time I spend in their and try to speed up the process and still feel clean.
One New Year’s resolution I want to make for the environment is to drink fewer products that come in plastic containers and drink from more from reusable containers. All the products I do drink from plastic or non-reusable containers I will properly dispose of. This is in order to lower the contribution I have to the pollution of water. This can help the marine life and all the people who depend on the marine life and directly drink these waters for survival.
My actions reflect my community, family, and city by for example your family. Lets say you got younger family members and your trying to set an example. Depending on what you are doing in front of them, they would probably do the same because they see that you are doing it and they think its right just because you are doing it. Also my actions reflect my community and city because if you are doing something good to prevent something that could happen. Others can follow what you are doing because the more people you have to help you it'll cause a dramatic change towards other people. My actions have changed since all of the things I have learned in Environmental Science. Now I drink less bottled water, I save more money. Tap water v.s Bottled water. Tap water all the way, its much healthier for you, less dirty, less chemicals. I've been drinking from my sink more often. One of my new years resolution that I wan't to accomplish that involves science is that I want to try to at least get people to stop drinking bottled water, why is it bad for them and why tap water is much better. But this time I can do more persuading because since we had several presentations on why its better. I can do better than what I did before
ReplyDelete- Jeffrey De La Cruz (4th period)
Yes, the things I have learned in environmental science has changed my actions because I went a long time without buying any water bottles and I have been drinking filtered water from my house this entire time because this class has shown me that the majority of bottled water is mainly tap water.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do live a sustainable life because in my house when I take out the trash I separate all the plastic, glass, and paper so that when I take out the trash I take out regular trash and I recycle as well and I have been accustomed to doing that my entire life so far and I plan on it staying that way because recycling is just one step forward to saving the environment.
One resolution I would like to make that is related to the environment is that I would like to give back more than recycling, like really give back to the community because you can never give back too much and things in the environment really aren’t getting any better, for example polluted air from factories, polluted water from industries dumping their waste into lakes and rivers which eventually lead into the ocean, from people littering in the streets and from no one taking care of our trees and plants and mistreating them.
My actions has changed due to Environmental Science because it made me realize that we have to take better care of our environment that we live in. For example, I don’t litter any more and I drink less water from plastic bottles because of the fact that we have safe clean drinking water that’s free.
ReplyDeleteI think I do have a sustainable life because I realize that we are hurting the environment every time we don’t do what we have to do for example like recycling. I do think I have a sustainable life because I don’t really over use our resources and also because Environmental Science has changed the way I feel about my environment.
One of my new year’s resolution is to help out the environment more often such as help clean out parks and the community itself. I decided this because of an interview I had with a person talking about a program that once a year they go around the streets and clean it up for the benefit of the people which I found this very interesting.
Before I started taking environmental science, I believed that my actions towards the environment would have little to no impact to my surroundings and family. Now, that has all changed and I strongly believe that it only takes one person to make a difference. My actions have changed throughout this class due to the lessons I've learned. An example of a lesson that made me change my actions was becoming more sustainable with water. In the United States, we have very easy access to water because we are surrounded by oceans. But compare to other countries like major parts of Africa, there's little access to water. These families struggle just to get at least a gallon of water a day. On top of that, the water is unsafe and it leads to causing diseases such as water borne disease. Furthermore, water is a nonrenewable resource and studies have shown that we are using "tomorrow's water for today's needs". This lesson made me become more sustainable because now I take quicker showers, close the faucet while brushing my teeth and use the water for essential needs. Becoming a more sustainable person has led me to want to influence more people and teach/tell them why water is so important to us and why we shouldn't take advantage of it. The more people that are aware of water's importance, the more sustainable our earth will be and better for future generations.
ReplyDeleteIn the year of 2012 in envirmental science class I've had a change in my experience of being sustainable. I know have the information that I need to be a sustainable person and know the facts that I can share with people that would want to be sustainable person as well. One change I've made in 2012 was drink tap water more often because I learned that tap water is clean and there's no need to buy bottled water.
ReplyDeleteI am know living a sustainable life because before I had an environmental science class I never recycled and I always bought water bottles. I know save money on water bottles and use my money on different things that I really need other than a water bottle when I can just re-use a bottle and fill it up with tap water.
My new year resolution is to recycle more often and let my family know about saving money on water bottles.
Kenneth rufino 4th period environmental science class.
Ever since I started taking this class, I’ve realized that I had to start making changes toward my actions if I would ever want a much safer environment for myself, my family and friends, and my community. Hearing all the facts that were said from my Environmental Science teacher and the visitors we have had so far this year helped me open my eyes and ears wider than before. It’s not easy adapting from one thing to another. For example, I personally used to buy water bottles when I felt lazy in using a reusable water bottle. When I felt thirsty while I was walking around the neighborhood, the first thing that popped into my head was to find the nearest grocery store so I would be able to buy a water bottle. Now, I have changed and one of my new year’s resolutions is to continue using my reusable water bottle throughout this year. I have also spread the word to some of my family members when I had the chance and they were pretty shocked. I’m also planning to continue in spreading the word about plastic water bottles to the rest of my family.
ReplyDeleteAt this moment, I don’t feel as if I have a sustainable life at the moment because I hadn’t been recycling, for example and there are two reasons for that decision. One of the reasons is that in my building, the superintendent doesn’t provide the tenants with recycling bins, so I feel that if I don’t have the recycling bin as part of my view in the morning, afternoon, and evening; it doesn’t encourage me to recycle. On the other hand, knowing who I am, if I would have a recycling bin provided for my parents, brothers, and I, I would definitely recycle and that would benefit me in being organized with what I dispose. The other reason why I don’t recycle at the moment is because of all the recycling facts I’ve heard about. For example, everything that’s supposedly recycled is traveled to India to be thrown out in the India landfill. Those ‘recycling’ bags are placed into mountains of other ‘recycling’ bags, which can also end up into the river and travel everywhere around the world. Just hearing this persuades me into not even recycle a little because I just feel that recycling is not worth it anymore. Overall, I feel that I can have a sustainable life throughout this new year with other decisions I can change when I’m about to start action on something.
One of the ways that my actions have changed because of what I learned in Environmental Science is that I try not to buy bottled water.Instead I have a reusable water bottle. If I want water I wait until I get home or if i'm in school I use the water fountain. I live a sustainable life because I recycle my bottles and try not to use bottled water. I also buy energy saving light bulbs. My New Year's resolution for Environmental Science is to not use so much water. With what I learned in science class I try to use less water than before. I do this because I think of the other people that don't really have water. It is not fair that we get to use all of the water we want and they barely have any. I also think about those people who don't have access to clean water. We take what we have for granted and don't think about others who also need water and cant have it.
ReplyDeleteMy actions impact my community, family and city for various reasons. What I do can represent all the above in a positive or negative manner. My actions have changed due to things I have learned in Environmental Science class. I have thought more about purchasing bottled water versus drinking from the tap. I have come to realize that wasting a dollar everyday on a bottle of water which is not 100%, will eventually pile up and result in wasting unnecessary money. Drinking from the tap is not as bad as it is portrayed. I sometimes drink from the tap and it tastes just about the same as bottled water. Another thing I became aware of is my daily water consumption. Before, I would turn on the hot water in my bathtub, just so the bathroom can heat up on cold mornings. Looking back, I realized that it is a total waste of water when instead, I can just sleep in winter pj's so I won't wake up freezing. I believe I live a merely sustainable life just because I always tell myself that I won't use natural resources unless necessary- but I still do use them unnecessarily. Although it can be said that I live a sustainable life because I tend to do more things electronically so I won't have to waste paper, a.k.a "kill trees". One New Year's resolution that I want to make which is environmentally related is to stop leaving the faucet on when not in use or for recreational purposes. I want to make this a resolution because there are impoverished people that do not have 24/7 access to water, and I do- which makes me feel a little guilty. While I'm complaining about what I have, there is always someone out there wishing they had it.
ReplyDeletei think my actions have changed in environmental science class because i now learned that our water that comes from the sink is very clean and that the bottled water is dirty for poeple to drink and its also bad for the environment where we are getting rid of waste that doesnt need to be in the river because then it will be dirty. i also learned that recycling and pollution are two big problems with people and also with the environment because most people dont recycle bottled water bottles because they are mostly lazy and dumb because u can get money for it and its bad for the environment because this waste of these bottles being burned goes to the river where most people like to swim at and if they swim there with all that pollution then this can get them really sick with many things.
ReplyDeletei think i do live i n a sustainable life because i just learned that our tap water in new york city is very clean and that it wont make me sick where in the past few years ago people would get sick from this but now im very happy that the environment changed that and that now i do live in a sustainable life because now i dont have to keep going to the grocery store to buy a bottled water each day for a dollar because this rite here is spending money on stuff that i think we dont need now because our tap water is cleaner and healthir now and thats very awsome!!!!
one of my resolutions is to stay positive this way where we can have the water from our sinks and instead of buying it. another resolution is ti have workers to clean rivers because pollution is bad for it. a third resolution is to recycle always because it can give you money to keep and to save. one last resolution is to also have workers to clean out the streets because wen i walk outside it looks very dirty and i want the environment to have this changed quick so that we dont have to walk on dirt or anything on the floor that is dirty.

My actions have somewhat changed because of the things I have learned in environmental science. I am now more cautious as to what items and resources I will use next and how to use next. Ever since the bottled water campaign/project it has made me understand that tap water is not harmful but actually better, healthier and fresher. Reusable water bottle is the safest to go in order to be healthy and live a sustainable life because plastic bottles harm our environment.
ReplyDeleteI live a moderate sustainable life because I recycle whatever material needs to be that I have used and I do not have the habit of littering on the streets.
A New Year’s resolution I want to make that is related to the environment is to use my reusable water bottle more often that contains tap water. I do not want to be in a situation where I do not have my bottle with me when i’m thirsty and will then have to go to the grocery store and buy the next it water bottle brand. The reusable water bottle will hopefully really motivate me to go to a faucet running with tap water and I will be able to place my bottle under the faucet and then be able to drink from it.
Targeting the essential question, I believe that my actions in my community have very little impact or no impact at all, because of the difference in quantity between me and the rest of the people around me. I believe that one alone cannot make an impact in a community unless one first tries to rally or group people, in order to increase awareness. After, you can decide to take action knowing your actions will actually have an alteration in your community because of the large amounts people doing it.
ReplyDeleteMy actions haven’t changed much because of what I have learned in environmental class, but I have become more aware of the environmental world around me. I think the one thing that has really changed about me is my use of plastic bottles. Knowing where the plastic ends up and what it does to our environment I have changed my disposal actions of it and now I recycle it or reuse it to my advantage.
I don’t think I live a sustainable life because I don’t have a strong economic standing and I don’t have a conscious when using materials such as water and plastic. Basically I do not live a homeostasis life where everything is balanced.
My New Year’s resolution now thinking about it is too reduce the amount of plastic bottles I buy. The reason for my resolution is because I want to help reduce the amount of plastic that goes into the ocean harming marine life. I want them to live a homeostasis life as well.
My actions towards my environment haven't really changed as much although I have learned new and better ways to help out my community. This is because I don't put much effort to actually make a change to help improve my environment.Just because I learn that I should do better doesn't mean that I going to be fast at doing it for example I still may do things that may hurt my environment when at the moment of it occurring I just do it with out thinking about my society and how it will be affected.Connecting to my sustainable life I'm actually not sustainable because I still put many stuff to waste for example I still take long showers and I still leave the water running when I'm brushing my teeth. Its not that I do it on purpose but its just that it happens. On the other hand I have worked on not buying bottled water and drinking more tap water. When drinking tap water I find myself telling everyone about how bad bottled water is and how its the same as tap water which is actually fun for me because I get to see people reactions. Also, when its comes to recycling I do it because I have to not because I choose to it doesn't actually come from my inner heart to recycle. A New Years resolution that I want to do towards my environment is to stop being less selfish on thinking about what benefits me then on how it may affect my surroundings. It's not that I don't care about my environment but it takes time to try to expand on something you never really thought about that often but rather then how it affects animals only. That's why I plan on changing my ways this year to put effort to help the community and society I live in.
ReplyDeleteYes Some Examples are To help My community be more safer.my life is not a sustainable life because i take longer showers and even still use a lot of water. Help the world recycle and even to drink some healthy water like tap water instead of drink water bottles.

My actions impact my community, family and city because it can take one person to start a chain and cycle of change. Environmental Science has changed the way I make more choices because of the way sometimes our choices can impact our community negatively. For example I refuse to let my house water run for several minutes if its not needed. I also use tap water more than bottled water. I don’t recycle anymore and I myself have encouraged my father not to recycle plastic bottles because sometimes the bottles aren’t recycled at all. I also learned that the Earth doesn’t have much fresh water so the more we use the more we are risking the value of our water and the quantity. I’ve also learned that bottled water is exactly the same as tap water so there's no need to spend money on something that’s causing so much harm. I believe I live a sustainable life because I conserve in a very smart way in order to conserve for the next generation. I don’t let the water run as I mentioned and I don’t buy unnecessary products I also make sure not to litter because our rivers and lakes water can be contaminated which can prevent us from retrieving fresh water and which can harm the animals such as trout that are in these waters which keep our rivers clean. It also harms the Oysters which suck up the toxins in our rivers. My New years resolution is to try to promote and try to keep my lifestyle as clean and green as possible. I just hope to promote and keep my environment better in 2013 I want this year to be as green as possible and I just hope my family can also learn what I have learned in Environmental Science and I’ll be sure to guide them through that.
ReplyDeleteI Don’t believe that I change a lot because of the things I learned in environmental science. When we were learning about bottled water vs tap water I already drank from the tap water. I learned that companies that sell bottle are giving you the same water you have home but the difference is that you have to pay for it. The only thing I change was that I bought an reuseable water bottle so that I don’t have to buy water bottles. I don’t life a sustainable life because I don’t recycle all the plastic bottles I buy. Sometimes have the choice to put the plastic bottles in a recycle garbage cans but I choose to throw in a different can because I know that when the garbage man come they just throw it together. I also waste a lot of water in my house. I take long baths and leave the sink open when I'm cleaning the dishes or brushing my teeth. One New Year's resolution I want to make that is related to the environment is that I need to stated recycling the plastic bottles I buy so the streets and the oceans become more cleaner.
ReplyDeleteBefore the end of the year we learned about sustainability and what ways we can help contribute into a more healthier planet. I learned things about both tap and bottled water that has changed my mind set completely. Learning things about bottled water is taken straight from the tap or in better words "public water sources. So that made me think automatically that I was spending unnecessary money on bottle waters. My first actions was to stop consuming bottled water and purchase a filter which I did now, I have a Brita water filter hooked onto my kitchen faucet. Already I'm seeing better economic results due to the new filter. Right now I'm sort of living a sustainable life because I stopped buying bottled water and I began using my filter everyday, I also began to recycle cans, bottled, plastic and paper in my house. I also turn off every light in my house when they aren't being used. One new years resolution I have is being able to not consume bottled water during or before baseball games when its too hot and I don't have water with me in the summer.
