Hydrofracking Initial Position - Due 2/10 @ midnight

This week we have learned about how natural gas was made and what we use it for in our daily lives.  We have also learned about a relatively new technique called horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing that is capable of accessing previously difficult to reach natural gas deposits in shale rock thousands of feet below the surface.  Finally, we began to take a look at the risks and benefits of drilling for natural gas by hydrofracking in NY state.

Based on your understanding of the hydrofracking write down in your blog post whether or not you are for against drilling for natural gas in NY state.

Be sure to support your position with evidence and analysis (argue why your viewpoint/opinion is correct)

Also, explain why you disagree with the opposing viewpoint (argue why the other viewpoint/opinion is incorrect - this argument should also be supported by evidence and analysis).

  1. I am against hyfrofracking from all the risks that it could do towards our state if the government agrees to go along with it. Even though there are many benefits towards the accusation of hydrofracking. But the thing is it can cause many bad things like the fracking fluid can be used to end up breaking apart the shale that contains toxic and carciggenic chemicals. If people were to drink the water that is mixed with these chemicals it can lead to the citizens of NY to having cancer. This is not a good thing towards the state. The state should know not to risk the lives of the citizens. In the near future if this were to happen the people of NY would protest or go on strike against the state. Blame this situation on them that all of this happened because of the state, just for approving to hydrofracking. Also, if any type of improper drilling can lead to methane migration into our aquifers. An accident can cause and potentially contaminate NYC's drinking water. This can start very dangerous risks in our city. Many people can start drinking this gas can effect them very bad. Also no one wants to be doing their dishes and the water end up turning into flames. No one wants to be at risk with this, no one wants to get hurt. So basically in my opinion hydrofracking should not be allowed in NY state, it would be a risk to even do it. It can start so many dangerous things, no one wants any type of trouble to the city of New York

  2. Throughout this whole weekend, our class was discussing the benefits and risks of using the process of horizontal drilling and hydrofracking. At first it was valid to think that because hydrofracking helps access natural gas underground Americas economy can grow as well become less dependent on oil. That’s one problem individually between people because this situation is being thought economically and what companies will obtain out of it. It is sure that money is important, but definitely not more important than out civilian’s health and safety. The risk throughout the process may not be as much as it can befit us, but if these risks were to happen, it would be long term affect affecting everyone in the area. Hydrofracking shouldn’t be allowed in NYC at all. NYC waterways are one of the cleanest water for people to drink. Allowing companies to do hydrofracking could jeopardize NYC clean water for many; it can potentially contaminate the water. If NYC water were to be contaminated, it would cost the city a load of money to sanitize the water. Another risk may be the chemical released through improper drilling. Improper drilling causes methane to migrate into the aquifers. Individual’s drinking water is being contaminated putting people in danger. Also the inhalation of natural gas and other chemicals can leak into the. Some of these chemicals can cause certain mutation to the human body giving people cancer. If more people get cancer, America has to invest more money in cancer treatments. Hydrofracking may be inexpensive but the risk can end up costing more than what the companies earn. Water is already at risk of there not being enough for everyone around the world from misusage, so why would we want add an additional concern that could risk our waterways great quality. Water is one of the most important natural resource we have. This new infrastructure will have to find another place to do hydrofracking because our water is not something to be experiment with no matter the benefits.

  3. Throughout this whole weekend, Our class was discussing the benefits of hydrofracking and the risk of it.I am against hydrofracking because it can harm our environment such as our drinking water but in one way hydrofracking can help access natural gas underground and that's a good thing for the economy because the economy can grow in somehow. But im against it because all the risk that can go toward our lives including the water that we drink it can affect us . One risk of hydrofracking is that the natural gas (methane) is a greenhouse gas and can contributed to global warming if it escapes. This shows that if the green house gas escape it can harm our lives for sure. Another risk of hydrofracking is that drilling of wells has lead natural gas contamination of drinking water. This shows that Drilling of wells has lead to natural gas contamination to our drinking water which is a risk because we drink water daily and water is our first source to maintain our bodies in somehow. Drilling of wells that's not a good idea because it can damage our drinking water because the drilling of wells had lead NG contamination. My last example of risk hydrofracking is that natural gas may contaminant surface groundwater. This illustrates that NG can contaminate groundwater in somehow but if it do contaminate surface groundwater it can damage our lives in a bad way. there's has being fracking flud use to break apart shale that contains toxic, caccingenetic chemicals that can certainly cause mutation to the human body giving people cancer which is a harmful thing to the human body because people can die in somehow. All this infrastructure needs to go away like far away to do hydrofracking because it can damage our lives and it can threaten the quality of life in somehow.

  4. I am for hydrofracking. Hydrofracking is an inexpensive and efficient method that allows energy companies to extract natural gas from shale located several thousand feet underground. Without this method, there would no other way to tap into and exploit the massive source of energy located in the Marcellus Shale. There are many places that rely on natural gas such as New York City. Without natural gas, which is the cleanest burning fossil fuel, these areas would be forced to use oil or coal, which would then create more pollution and be more expensive for people. If hydrofracking began in the Marcellus Shale, the United States would then become the largest producer of natural gas, which could be beneficial to the American economy. Natural gas could be exported to other countries, and could decrease our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. It could also help out financially unfortunate people who own land near the Marcellus Shale. They could their land to gas companies and make a lot of money. Many people argue that hydrofracking could potentially contaminate drinking water on the surface or aquifers, however the drilling to tap into the shale is several thousand feet underground, well below any drinking water and under layers of impermeable rock that the natural gas could not go through. Methane migration, would could also contaminate aquifers, although a legitimate risk, is not a fault of hydrofracking but of improper drilling done by the gas companies. When hyrdofracking is done properly, there is virtually no risk of water contamination.

  5. This week I learned about Natural Gas and how it is able to get to our every daily lives. Natural Gas is found very deep below our surface inside Shale rocks. The method use to transport the Natural Gas from the Shale rock into the Natural Gas companies is called Hyrdofracking. This method has it's pros and cons yet I believe that it has more cons so thats why i'm against Hyrdorfracking. Hyrodofrackung has risks that are both huge and little. Some huge risk for example the chemical use when hydrofracking can poison our water. This can happen because in order to breaks open the shale which is deep below the surface the machine of hydrofracking must cut pass our water table. These chemical been claim unhealthy and have sign of Carcinogens synthesis. What makes it even worst is that companies aren't obligated to tell you rather or not their Natural Gas can cause heath issues. In the state of New York the topic of drilling into the Marcellus Shale has been something to look upon very closely. The government and along with the law the ex president george w bush sign seem to be very shady on what the companies need to tell us on what kind of chemical they put inside while drilling. Another risk is the claim of the water catching methane due to incorrect drilling or incorrect sealing after drilling. Little risk such like 30% of water is lost and natural Gas still being a threat to the green house also take a part of why I go against hydrofracking Yet it also has a few benefits that can help us with our living conditions it's not worth of taking the risk of our heath to be destroyed I will say. 6. So far from the all the pros and cons of Hydrofracking, I've decided that I approve of it. The reason why I do is that it's the only method of it's kind to extract natural gas from the deep shale's underground and most criticism about it is over exaggeration. Hydrofracking enables us to collect natural gas that can serve as an alternative to fossil fuel in our lives. Since it is a cleaner burning fuel, people would make a switch to it as soon as possible. In addition to it being a cleaner burning fuel, we can obtain natural gas in our own land, rather than internationally, which would reduce dependence on foreign fossil fuel. Also, obtaining fuel will boost our economy something that we are in need of. It will add another big industry to the United States Economy like the coal and oil industries, creating plenty of jobs in America. The reason why I disagree with the opposing viewpoint is that critics over stretch the truth about it. It has been said that hydraulic fracking has contaminated our ground water which has never been proven in the last two years. They also say that it has contaminated our surface but knowing about earth's multiple impenetrable layer is that it acts as a filter and doesn't let any contaminates reach more than a mile underground to far away to reach our ground water.

  7. Trough this whole week we been doing studying natural gas and how important is it. We also learned how common it is on our daily lives. Due to the fact that we use it every day, we need a large amount of natural gas so that everyone could benefit from it. This whole week I was trying to decide if this horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing is a good idea or a bad idea. After a long week of seeing and reading different perspectives, I believe that it’s actually a negative process. I believe it’s negative because we are losing more than we are gaining. Yea many argue that we are going to gain a lot of natural gas that the nation as a whole could benefit from. But I say that for this process we are wasting water that we are never going to get back. Our amount of fresh drinking water is very limited and with this process we are putting it to waste. We could actually get natural gas from other countries, but our fresh water is ours and other nations can’t afford to import fresh water. Also we are not being told what chemicals are being used for this process. Those chemicals could lead to disasters or spread of bacteria. But we will never know because we are not being exposed to the truth. Also these chemicals could infect our drinking water supply with radiation. We as humans are nothing without water, and in the future I see the human race being able to live without natural gas first then without drinking water. Therefore until we are not fully aware of every chemical that’s not being used in hydraulic fracturing, I will have a negative view tours hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling.

  8. in this week we have talked about hydrofracking and what are the risk and benefits about it.I disagree with hydrofracking back it's a danger to the people in america. Hydrofracking is when a there is a explosion under ground the use high water pressure to suck up the natural gas which is bad because that water used stays under ground which is a waste of water that could be used for drinking water.another problem is that the the natural gas could get into the water underground that could be toxic and may cause poison people who drink that water which can cause major risk into the Hydrofracking company and the state that the area was drilled, the people that are from the Hydrofracking company won't say what was in their fracking Fluid but when the did say what was in there fracking Fluid and one of the thing it had was a type of toxic waste that could cause cancer ,if there was a accident like what happen with BP and the oil spill which could also lead problems with the fracking company and could have the same fate as BP.If we do use natural gas a sub for gas/oil it would still cause a greenhouse effect when there's a hole in the ozone layer and the suns rays goes though and it heats the planet which doesn't make any changes but have a way to fill up a car with material that came from america this is way i don't agree with Hydrofracking and the risk that it could cause in america

  9. In this week we have talked about hydro fracking and what are the risk and benefits about it. i agree with it because there our a lot of benefits to it, for example natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel. Its cleaner then oil, coals. natural gas helps out the farmer a lot because it may allow farmers to increase their yields products to increase total number of things you could grow. natural gas will be good for our economy problem because we can sell our natural gas to the other countries and to resolved problems with other nations. they might be risk like them drilling it put contaminate our water but they obvious know that and they gonna work hard on that so it wont happen. global warming could happen if natural gas escape nut they will invent something that wont let this happen they all plan this stuff so nothing bad could go wrong.

  10. I am with the idea of Hydrofracking! Do not get me wrong though, Hydrofracking has its many negatives. But the benefits outweigh the negatives in many different ways. One reason why I believe hydrofracking will be a huge success is because it is so much cheaper than other sources and it will be produced within the country. This can lead to a huge incline in our economy because businesses will no longer need to trade for oil internationally because there is a cheaper source at home, so the foreign trade and the spending of larger amounts of money are instantly cut off. Furthermore, this can even lead to other countries wanting to trade gas with the United States because our gas will be cheaper and better overall. Second, natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel! How can that possibly be negative? The fact that there’s an energy source cheaper, cleaner, and not foreign makes this a perfect idea. Its clean burn will dramatically reduce the amount of greenhouse gasses we are emitting to our atmosphere, therefore leading to a decline in global warming and other natural dysfunctions. Third, if the drilling is done properly our water supply is unharmed making this a win-win situation because the cleaner fuel source is being reached with nothing being lost, damaged, or contaminated. If hydrofracking were to contaminate our water supply then it wouldn’t be worth it because we are gaining natural gas but we are losing water which is a scarce resource that is needed by many people at this time and contaminating it or losing it is not a risk worth taking. In order to aid in our struggle of scarce resources, hydrofracking should happen in NY so we can make progress in terms of resources.

  11. This week in Living Environment we study the use of Hydrofracking and its risks and benefits. In my opinion I believe that Hydrofracking affects our environment. It affects our environment because it takes resource out the ground that earth needs. One example of hydrofracking being risky is if some gas was to escape. By Natural gas escaping into the atmosphere it creates green house gases which affects weather changes on earth. This is bad because if we get alot of green house gases we would have crazy weather and probably in summer time weather would change to cold. Another example of Hydrofracking being risky is because it depletes our fresh water resources. Hydrofracking uses fracking fluid which includes water sand and a unspecified chemical that could cause cancer. The fracking fluid is dangerous to our health because ones that fluid is deep in the shale it becomes nuclear which could affect our health if we drank it. So what gas companies do is loss this water because it cant be recycled because is nuclear and the chemicles they use could cause cancer. These are only some of the main topics I believe could be risky to us if anything went wrong in Hydrofracking

  12. This week we learned about hydrofraking being done in the U.S. . This drilling or natural gas is being viewed from both negative and positive perspectives across the nation. Personally I support the idea of the drilling for this natural gas for potential future demands of a substance capable of producing energy. From my view point there are pros and cons in this activity. For one, natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel existing at the moment. This helps to not create or add more pollution to the environment that's as harmful as burning oil or coal. Also, natural gas is inexpensive and costs much less than oil for example. This helps the over all economy save billions of dollars that is spent on other energy sources like oil. Natural gas is being found in different parts of the country which in many ways is a good thing. With the very provoking estimate of 498 trillion cubic meters of natural gas possibly being under the Marcellus Shale, this could reduce the U.S. dependence on other countries for energy sources like oil or gas. This can also reduced conflicts with other nations, this gas can be sold for profit, jobs will eventually be made etc . Some potential risks are contamination of drinking water, inhalation of natural gas, methane leaking into aquifers and many more complications. With this idea of drilling for this gas has to also come with precaution standards, protective solutions in case of an emergency (leaks, contamination of water) and more refined methods to pump this natural gas to ensure its a 100% safe procedure where nothing or no one can get harmed in anyway. People just have to realize that oil and gas are soon to run out and we are going to need a resource to replace that until there are new methods found to produce energy.
