Blog Post Due Sunday 4/7 @ midnight

Over the past few weeks we have learned about the Keystone XL pipeline and completed an activity where we extracted bitumen (a type of crude oil) from sand.

Reflect on this learning experience...

What did you learn and what did you find interesting?

Take a position on whether or not the Keystone XL pipeline should be built between Canada's tar sands and the Gulf of Mexico in the U.S.

Provide at least three reasons for your position and evidence to support your reasons.

  1. What I had learned was that oil can come from sand which is very interesting. Who ever knew that sand would be holding oil inside it. This can bring a lot more resources than us trading with other countries, this could be faster for us than gathering oil from other regions around the world. The keystone pipeline should not be built at all. According to the oil sands industry in Canada tied to, demonstrates that these sands has increased levels of cancer. What would the world look like with many populations of people having cancer in different regions of the world. Then probably only half of that population would drop from many people dying from this disease. The levels have been rising since the production had started in year 1978, these levels would keep rising due to time if this keeps happening. If Obama agrees to the pipeline this would increase a lot more and ruin things, and create a lot more problems in the United States. Then according to the article pipeline spills stir new criticism shows a example of a problem. Where the exxom mobile pipeline in Arkansas spilled oil on the town where 22 homes had to end up being evacuated. The is a example towards what could happen with the keystone pipeline on why it should not be built. If this pipeline evacuated 22 homes imagine how much homes the keystone pipeline could evacuate with how long the pipeline is going to be.

  2. The Keystone XL pipeline is another project of disaster to the United States. This oil mixed with sand is known to be the dirtiest oil on earth. If this oil were to spill anywhere, it would become very difficult to tidy up. America has witness the worst oil spill in history, killing and sickening many marine animals. It is important that this event doesn’t repeat again because America’s budget is not in the condition to reconstruct damages caused by these leaks. Obama is doing right by not completely authorizing the construction of the Pipes that will transfer the oil from Canada to America.
According to the Article “Oil sands industry in Canada tied to…” The development of oil sand has increased the risk of cancer. PAHs is a chemical/toxic in the oil that can cause a human being to develop cancer if long-term exposure. If this chemical is mixed with our bodies of water, then human health is being put at danger because our water resource is being contaminated with toxic chemicals. On April 2, 2013 an article reports an oil spill in the town of Mayflower. Layers of oil were surrounding the town causing the evacuation of 22 homes. As previously said, this oil is very difficult to clean up and it would take months to get rid of it completely. This oil has not only put at risk people’s life’s but as well their shelter and safety. The keystone pipeline shouldn’t be even considered in the Untied States. It will sabotage Urban and Suburb areas.
Overall, knowing enough about the keystone XL pipeline has influence my decision in weather the industry should get involve with America, and it shouldn’t. Because America desires to benefit financially, the Keystone XL pipeline is not the way to go. It would only bring more problems to the country. The oil may benefit us economically but we can’t afford any ruin to happen. The U.S should let Canada just negotiate with Asia because it’s too risky for us.

  3. The Keystone XL pipeline is another topic that we learned this pass two weeks and is connected to hydrofracking which both seems to be a failure to the United States and to many other places. In the article "No Keystone. Yes to crazy"that We were reading I found an interesting facts that the Keystone XL pipes are the dirtiest removal of the dirtiest crude oil from tar sand in Canada. This shows that the keystone XL pipes are the dirtiest extraction of the crude oil from tar sand. This is influencing the United States in somehow. Another Interesting facts from the aticles is that The author of this article said that He hope the president turns down the Keystone XL oil pipelines. This Illustrates that the author in somehow he does't agree having the Keystone XL oil Pipeline because there's gonna be problem for the people and for the environment. My last Facts from the article"The Tar Sands Disaster" shows that the author is against Obama opinion because the tar sands is not good for the environment and the keystone XL oil Pipeline it a dirtiest, nasty material and it can harm the environment too. This Shows that this is too risky and people wants to live the life, we don't want to destroyed it because then there's gonna be nothing left so I agree with the author because building this is gonna be too risky in somehow. Overall I don't agree building the Keystone XL oil Pipeline because America have a lot of success and we don't want to hurt it or harm because if we build it it will bring problems to the country and more problem so we don't want that to happen. We know that oil is good like we need oil for a lot of stuff but we don't want more problems to happen the United States should talk to Asia and persuaded them to negotiate with them because the U.S don't go with that agreement including us.

  4. The Keystone XL and tar sands are another controversial topic that has surfaced in our class. The Keystone XL pipeline is a 1,700 mile pipe that cost $7 billion, this project that would transport about 700,000 barrels of tar sands from Canada to Louisiana. This idea to help maintain a stable oil production is just another harmful way to produce oil. In “Oil sands industry in Canada tied to…” it states PAHs have been found. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons cause cancer in long-term exposures to humans. It was also found that there were 2.5 to 23 times more PAHs in current sediments than in the layers of 1960. The tar sands idea is another environmentally destructive process that can cause a catastrophe. The possibility of an oil spill resembling that of BP’s is likely. This project is being held momentarily by the President Obama because the pipeline crosses international borders. There is being done research to see if there will be a negative environment affect. Tar sands are known as one of the dirtiest oils and produce 17 times more carbon emissions then regular oil. Once again The United States is looking for yet another harmful alternative instead of basing our energy on renewable energy. Renewable energy should be then investment being done by the United States.

  5. I believe that the keystone XL is a project that is meant to help the enviormental but its a project that can damage the enviorment as well. The project shouldn't be built due to the results that can happen, for example the surface can be damaged and the underground can get ruined. Also the pipes can break along the time that the pipe is underground. I it's important to find ways that can help the enviorment but it has to be in ways that can be helping and not ruining the enviorment like the keystone xl will.

  6. The keystone Xl pipeline is pipeline that would travel 2000 miles to connect Canada's oil to around Huston and the gulf of Mexico. This has become a radeoff because this pipeline can bring and transport oil however harm the environment. What I found interesting is how when we did the bitumen fro oil sand activity ph7 conclude the lowest ph had the highest bitumen recover being the inverse of what should of been the results. Before doing the activity the tar sand looked more like sand and oil bond together and then after it looked more spread out. My position on rather or not Obama should prove to this is against it. This XL pipeline addresses environmental issue like global warming it can damage our land and threat environment including the animals and homes around it. Beside this risk and effect the oil to be taken out of the tar sand is messy and require a lot of work. I think we should just get out oil from other countries even if Canada is next to the United States I rather have and live in a safe and clean environment then have lot of oil.

  7. The key stone XL pipe line has been topics that I have not find as interesting and all other topics, but I learned enough information in order to take a position. 1 interesting fact that caught my attention was that for the first time the president was involved. In all the other issues only state representatives have been involve. I learned that the president was involved because it crosses an international border. The key stone pipeline crosses the Canadian border. I don’t agree with the construction of the key stone XL pipe line because Tar sand is the dirtiest fusel fuel. I also don’t agree because some of the damages that it could cause are severe. For example it could cause cancer after long time exposure. Another reason why I don’t agree with it it’s because the entire project is 17000 miles long and it cost 7 billion dollars. I personally feel that the government could use this money to fight other environmental issues. They could invest that money in solar panels. That’s something that would benefit the earth greatly. Also with the construction of this pipeline a lot of land would be constructed on. Some of the stake holders for the construction of the pipeline would be local residents and animals that live in the area. Also rebuilding and fixing pipelines would cost the government more money. In order to extract the oil from the tar sand water is need it. Companies would have to use the people’s water to extract the oil. At the end the benefits of the key stone XL pipeline aren’t worth taking all the risk and the money that it takes to be build.

  8. The Keystone Pipeline goes from Canada to Texas passing Canada's tar sands which is one of the dirtiest natural materials to be used. The United states government has place a deal with Canada to send the tar sand to the us but president Obama veto the government to create the pipeline which is a good thing because it a danger to the planet and the tar sand could destroy the pipeline do the the sand scratching the inside of the pipeline which could create a spill which could decrease the amount of money that the united sates lost do to the spill if it happen. I'm against the building of the keystone pipeline because of how the bad the material that we are buying from other county and how the effects that it does to a pipeline which could case a spill which is losing money on the spill material and the repair on the pipeline which would really help the United States it just creating another problem that we don't want.

  9. The Keystone pipeline is a extradinary issue that can be both beneficial but at the same time not worthy to built. It's effect on the land is a major concern especially on the president. If he decides to build the pipeline all his followers especially the environmentalist will look down on him especially he made many promises to them. Not only does he loose like this but also if he approves the pipeline it ends up affecting the United States because we aren't getting any oil and well have to pay for it even more, although he will create thousands of jobs. The pipeline is still a problem that has 2 solution but either way im still against it. It destroys vast amount of land especially land that got trees which is a common source that we need to survive. The digging of the pipe will effect all throughout that vast amount of clean and prosper land we got, just to create a bad piece of engineering. But also we end up having more oil but at what cost, hurting thousands of animals habitats and families just to build a unnecessary object that will destroy the United states.

  10. This week we having been studying about the keystone pipeline and it would benefit or affect the us. The key stone pipeline is a underground pipe line that goes from Canada all the way to Texas. It mostly carries the dirtiest type of oil that could affect our land over time. Oil companies first started extracting butement from our ground which affect the nature of many places by taking its sand and trees down to extract the oil in it. Companies say that after they extract the oil they put everything back to normal but what they don't say is that the chemicals used to put on the sand to extract the oil is never taken out and it is put back on the ground affecting the lands nature overtime. I believe the keystone pipeline should not be build because in my opinion i believe that overtime is going to create problems with Canada , Affect our land nature and decrease our food resources and poison our limited amount of fresh water.

  11. I believe the Keystone XL is another thing the can the destroy the environment. The pipeline going to travel 2000 miles to Canada witch is also gonna be connected with the Gulf of Mexico of United States. One thing that I also found interested was the pipe line has the dirtiest fuel. In think that it should not be built because it cost 7 billion dollars and we should not be wasting that much money on the some thing that is going to affect are environment very badly. And that's another thing that by the affecting the environment the global warming is going to get it worst if we build this pipeline. Finally I think it should not be build because the dirty fuel could lead to more people having cancer and we don't need that and its leading to cancer because of all the chemicals that the fuel has.

  12. While my group and I were advancing through our activity, based one of the many processes used to extract oil, we realized that we had made a discovery that we were not expecting. The oil we had extracted had hardened and had shifted more to a solid and less like a liquid which came to a surprise to me because I had inferred that the oil would disperse and break into smaller particles across the filter paper. The Keystone XL pipeline should not be built between Canada’s tar sands and the Gulf of Mexico because it will bring upon unnecessary foreign conflict between the United States and Canada. The US and Canada share a very friendly relationship and have not shared any major conflicts and a conflict is a possible outcome of this form of international business especially since a majority of the people in the US assume that the Iraq war was influenced by the amount of oil in the middle east.

  13. During the pass week we been working on a photo voice project. The project reflects on an environmental issue and my class and I took pictures of he issues around our areas. In the bottom of the picture we wrote captions that reflects on the issue and what and how we can fix it. My group and I dd trees. i l picked this issue because trees are beauty of nature and we live among tree an no one notice how they are hurt and effected. While I didthis project I discover how my ideas are beyond what I ever expected and how they can lead to actions. At the start of the project I had no idea what w were going to do and thought it wasn't gonna have no effect at the end. But in the end It truly did have effect I learned and discover new ideas and ays to fix issues that are among my own home. So at the end I ended up liking the project and the person I worked with. Kat was a wonderful person to dentify the issues on tress and connect it to the ecosystem and how it works. Along with her and the group we came up with great open minded ideas. i ill like our actions to take part next by combining all the environmental issues together and fixing them all at once starting with the area around ou school. I do think photo voice should be use next year but it can improve by doing more actions activity.
