  1. During this week of environmental science I sat down in class 2 talk about natural gas and hydrofracking and my position on hydrofracking. Natural gas is a fossil fuel that is mainly used for heating and cooking which means that natural gas can be found in stoves. Natural gas is primarily methane and it is orderless because mecaptan is added to it to give it a stinky smell. Natural gas also burns cleaner, hotter, brighter than coal or oil. This type of gas is primarily transported underground. Natural gas can be found in the Marcellus Shale which is located in southern western New York state. Natural is made out of dead things. Natural gas goes through a process called hydrofracking and hydrofracking is consists of pumping fluid and a propping material such as sand down the well under high pressure to create fracture in the gas bearing rock. I approved hydrofracking because this provide people with jobs, used for cooking and heating and it also cheaper than gasoline and cleaner.

This is interesting because people really don't know that natural gas is the reason that us human lives everyday. This also interesting because if their was no natural gas a lot of people would suffer in the winter because it tend to be so cold in the winter. This is also interesting because there is a lot of people with no jobs in the United States but Hydrofracking causes people to get some type of jobs.

This changed my perspective because I never knew anything about hydrofracking and I didn't think that natural gas was important until I learned about it. Natural gas is actually important because without it people would not be able to eat. I encourage people to use natural gas because it is cheaper then gasoline. Hydrofracking is an impact because it provides jobs to the unemployed people. some questions I still have is does hydrofracking have more of a risk or impact our environment?

  2. I belive that the hydrofracking process is beneficial to us the individuals and the country.Hydrofrackin is the process used to extract natural gas from the marcellus shale to the surface.During hydrofrackin a hole is drilled , that hole passes right through our water table and to the shale with explosives that would crack the marcellus shale and natural gas would pour out and reach the surface. Natural gas was formed 200 years ago from the remains of animals that where pressured by objects, this pressure caused fossil fuels ,which is the main source that forms natural gas.
The hydrofracking process provides us with a cheaper and pollution reducing gas.Natural gas has many benefits.According to the “Independent oil and gas Association of New York” natural gas benefits the New York economy, its 60% less expensive than gas at pumps. This is a big increase in the U.S economy ,it also makes gas affordable to the individuals with low income.Natural gas burns cleaner, hotter and brighter than coal or oil .This proves that Natural gas is better for reducing pollution than, oil, coal, or gas at pumps.
Hydrofrackin is a benefit, some individuals oppose the hydrofracking process because they fear that since the hole drilled passes right through our water table the chemicals used for the process might contaminate our water. In the New York Post the article “Phony fears on fracking” it states that those same chemicals use for the hydrofracking process are found in cosmetics, make up remover, detergents, processed foods, lemon juice, hand soap, and disinfectants. This shows that those chemicals are already being consumed by individuals without getting it from their water. If the hydrofrackin process is detained the chemicals used are still going to find their way into our water table because when we use soap or detergents or even when we wash our faces to remove make up.The hydrofracking process provides us cheaper gas. Sometimes not all expensive things are better.

  3. I believe that hydrofracking shouldn’t be allowed. It harms the people that need to live around this and it doesn’t even bother to help them out. In one article I had seen how a women has to live with the fear of not bathing her child because she is worried that if she does bathe him he will begin to get warts and boils all over his body. Keeping in mind that he is a 1 year old baby. The same can go for her other 10 year old daughter who frequently gets sick whenever she has to bathe in that water where hydrofracking is done. The companies say that there is really no big health problem caused by hydrofracking that it is really just a Phony fear on fracking”. The chemicals that they use to be able to clear the rocks are actually really powerful and dangerous to any human who drinks or does anything with it. That’s why I think they should try and find another way on how to hydrofrack or even anything else to get the shale rock out from underground.

  4. I’m really glad that Mr.Fox is giving us the opportunity to write our position papers in class. This week we have been starting or rough draft on or first position paper in the science class. Or postion need to be toward allowing hydrofraking Or against it. I wasn’t really sure how I was feeling about having to chose. I was both for and against hydrofraking. I’m for it because it’s the most efficient way of getting natural gas out of the ground and in to or homes. We need natural gasses in order to cook and stay warm. But im against it because ei feel like we are hurting mother nature as well as a strong chance of hurting our water system. But at the end I chose that the thesis of my position paper should be yes I agree with hydrokraking. Its safe and the best way to get natural gas hurts the world much less the oil or fuel. We all need to support hydrofraking.

  5. Taking a side was definitely the hardest part for me for making my position paper. I knew the concerns of people against hydrofracking but I also knew the benefits of hydrofracking. What I really wanted to know was the truth. I made up my mind because I figured that you cannot replace a concern for a fact. Hydrofracking seemed most beneficial because its negatives were unclear. I thought about both positions a lot I first got in perspective. I knew that eliminating hydrofracking would mean many people would be jobless and poor which would be a disadvantage for all of us. When it came to concern of water supply I came to a conclusion that since there weren’t any major documented effects of the process that the positives outweighed the negatives.
In my paper I found it crucial to talk about how eliminating hydrofracking would devastate the economy. We think its bad now but imagine if all those who work with hydrofracking were jobless; the government would have to spend a great deal of money to create programs to help these people. Needless to say many would find it difficult to cope with the fact that because of phony concerns it would cost the united states a great deal of time and money to revitalize.
In addition to being jobless, the energy we would need would come from unhealthy sources like that of coal and oil. It is important to think about this because oil is very crucial to us which would only lead to wasting oil harming other businesses because a lot of things are made out of oil.

  6. This week in Environmental Science after learning about Hydrofracking and natural gas, I started writing in which I had to take a position on whether or not Hydrofracking should be legal in the Marcellus shale of New York State. Writing a position paper means to show how well we understand the information we learned in class. In order to write the position paper, we needed to have a thesis, and two body paragraphs one of which support our thesis and the other one have to do with counter argument. In the introduction, we needed to include what hydofracking was how it is being formed, and natural gas where can you find it. The two body paragraphs needed to have three evidence to support your thesis, and the same for the counter argument. Furthermore, the conclusion to put everything together.

In my opinion I believe Hydrofracking should be aloud to be legal in the Marcellus shale New York State. Although some people might think hydrofracking is bad because it affects people's drinking water, but the fact that it can create jobs shows why it is important. For those that are interested in geology, science, hydrofracking is important because it creates jobs in all these kind of fields.

This relates to me because I live in New York. Learning that natural gas can be found in the same area where our water comes from, this is important to learned the kind of things that can affect my drinking water.

  7. I never really thought of the damage and consequences of hydrofracking. I also never really knew what it ment. Hydrofracking is obviously not beneficial in my opinion. Humans are not safe due to the fact that it causes cancer, because of the chemicals that are in the wells and in the process of transporting the water. As of shown in previous videos and articles it is clear to me that hyfrofracking causes a lot of sickness because of the gas wells. The water is dirty which causes rashes, nose bleeds and this all hurts a humans body. It is also dangerous because of the metals and bacteria on the water. Many people had complaints that they had children and their children was not able to drink water, and know that it is safe. This is dangerous because the risks of hydrofracking are many. But one may say that hydrofracking would be beneficial because this would allow people to have more jobs and it would economically help the economy. New restaurants would be created, hotels and stores. But in my perspective this still does not add up to having safe water. Hydrofracking is not safe.

  8. In my opinion I believe that the idea of hydrofracking is not a threat to our water or all other natural resources . The only problem that is concerning to environmentalist is the process of how the natural has will be extracted from underground , therefore it gives a sense of fear in proceeding. The main idea of doing this is to reach to the natural gas and the technique that they have develop is a safe technique because it will not contaminate or affect the water resource if they reach deep they will point horizontally to make sure is direct. It's important that people understand and trust the experts that all they are doing is improving the environment in a way. Natural gas is clean and can be use with very efficient results and before is too late we should use this natural gas to run all mechanism that ise fuel because is a clear clean gas. I rather be safe for the future than sorry.

  9. During this week of Environmental Science, we had started writing our position paper based on Hydrofracking, we had to use evidence from the articles that we've read. In my opinion, Hydrofracking isn't harmful in our environment, therefore it should be allowed. There was one article that said there was many complaints but there wasn't evidence to prove that, and natural gas is an important source that is needed everyday. I also believe if Hydrofracking was really dangerous, then it would've stopped by the government, Hydrofracking also helped a lot of the poor people with jobs in the past, by stopping the process it would affect them.

  10. This week in Environmental Science, we thought and analyzed about our position in either if hydrofracking should be allowed or not by looking at some evidence from our text. It was a hard decision but i decided that hydrofracking should be allowed. Without Natural Gas, we wouldbe freezing and eating raw cold food.Even though, hydrofracking may cause some health problems ike carcinogen and increase asthma rates but it doesn't happen frequently.

  12. This week we've been mostly working on the writing process for our position paper on hydrofracking. Each day in class this week we worked on a different part of the paper. We have worked on the introduction, our position paragraph and our counter argument paragraph.

The position I decide to pick is pro-hydrofracking. I believe hydrofracking is mainly positive and would benefit our nation astoundingly. With hydrofracking we would be able to increase our economy and create more jobs for citizens.

Writing the position isn't going to be an easy task to do. Its better to start off writing it early and not leave it for the last minute. I”m grateful that we were able to work on it in class and also submit a rough draft before the final one is due.

One may argue that Hydrofracking is bad for our environment due to the fact that in the process chemicals are needed in order to fracture the rock shale. This process we use in order to collect natural this natural gas is safe, because the makers of this system manage to seal the water table in order for chemicals not to get in. In relation, these chemicals added, are in reality just one percent of the total amount of liquid added. 99 percent of this liquid has compounds of water, sand, and silt. Even though these chemicals are introduced into our water, we should begin to realize that the components found in this “hazardous chemical” are found in everyday products we use to clean and etc, we flush down our toilets and our drains which get released to our water stream. This indicates that this problem isn't something new. It isn't something we haven't seen before, or hasn't been released to our water streams before.

In addition, do we not see that if we ban Hydrofracking we would worsen our economy by increasing unemployment? Hydrofracking is beneficial for our urban community because it helps the economy. It manages to create 20,000 good paying jobs in New Y?ork alone. It is said to “establish our states poorest counties into potentially one of the most productive natural- gas fields In the world. Due to the fact that no system is perfect, even without hyrdrofracking; the water system for example will never ensure everyone’s safety or everyone's support. The overall goal of any system should be to benefit the majority hence, banning Hydrofracking would hurt the majority deeply. Natural gas is something we as a urban population rely heavily on. We use this gas for cooking and heating, it is the blue gas that comes out of our stoves when we want to cook something.
In conclusion, We should not ban something we need and depend on so heavily on.

  14. At the beginning of this learning experience, i had never even heard of the word hydrofracking or what it was before. Once i began learning about it I began to fall deeply interested in its concepts. The readings given to us caught my attention, but left me puzzled. I didn't know whether I was for or against hydrofracking. I then began to think about what natural gas is and how it impacts me personally. I concluded that I do love to eat hot meals, take warm showers, and when its cold outside I do turn on the heater to keep myself at comfort in my home. I then began to incline onto supporting hydrofracking, until I was shown the clip "Energy Now" made me realize that even though hydrofracking and the natural gas obtained from it benefits us, it also has its disadvantages. During hydrofracking chemicals can leak out and contaminate the ground water we use. In this clip a woman's water had been contaminated and when she held a match to the water it bursted into flames. A different family's child got rashes, and every time they bathed him the rashes would get worse. Another famiy's water came out of the faucet as white as milk, instead of crystal clear. All these things took place after drilling began happening at sites near their homes. Hydrofracking also pollutes the air, in that same clip various individuals who lives near drilling sites developed breathing and health problems. After watching this clip nothing could change my mind about what i had decided, Hydrofracking should be stopped. Evnthough it does benifit us greatly, peoples lives shouldn't be put at risk because of it, hydrofracking will hurt us more than it will help us.

  15. This week of environmental science mainly consisted of preparation for our first position paper of the trimester on Hydrofracking. I'll be honest, when Mr. Fox announced that we would be doing a position paper, I was little bummed out. But I should have known, knowing Mr. Fox, he was going to try to make this position paper process as easy and simple as possible. But also with a side dish of learning, of course. Each and everyday of the week we started on a new section of our paper and knocked them down. I was fairly proud of my focus and concentration for my introductory and first body paragraphs. My writing clearly portrays this focus. I used every vocabulary word that was required to be used in the intro paragraph and my thesis statement was clear. I also included every aspect that was needed in the intro paragraph.
My position for this paper was pro-hydro fracking. The reason why I chose this side is because, according to the articles provided to us by Mr. Fox, the benefits outweigh the flaws and risks of hydro fracking. I clearly stated this argument and my standing on the argument in the thesis statement of my intro paragraph.

  16. Before i learned more about hydrofracking i was for it. One reason i was for it was because the natural gas we recieve from hydrofracking is usable for heating and cooking in our homes which is necessary for staying warm and in order to cook our food. Another reason i was for hydrofracking was because it was cheaper and more afordable and the gas we get is one third the amount of gas. After learning about the negatives of hydrofracking and natural gas i saw that hydrofracking was negative. One reason was because when exposed to the natural gas people who are exposed to the gas can get cancer from it. Another reason im not for hydrofracking is because the gas when released can enter to our homes and be exposed to methane which can cause explosions and harm to our bodies if exposed. therefore i am against hydrofracking due to the many health risks. -----Brunel Paul :)

  17. This week in Environmental Science, we mostly prepared for our first position paper. The position paper is based on hydrofracking. When Mr. Fox announced this I thought that it was going to be the same type of position paper as we’ve been doing for Mr. Rochowicz class. But it wasn’t that hard actually. We were basically looking at slides, documents, and videos to help us in evidence in order to create a stronger position paper. Me personally I’m for hydrofracking. I think that without gas, most such as me won’t survive a single week without it. When working on the introduction of the position paper, I used a lot of personal life experiences which helps the reader relate and appeal more to my argument/position. I think that the benefits of natural gas is well over its cons. Most people don’t agree but I have certain points in which I can use to argue.

  18. Hydrofracking in my opinion is essential towards our country's growth. Its obvious the benefits outweigh the risks. If fracking is allowed it can have the following benefits. Hydrofracking can reduce our trade deficit by 25 billion per month. Thats 300 billion dollars that could be saved a year with the use of natural gas. Also natural gas is clean, hotter and burns cleaner than oil or coal. Moreover 30% of natural gas can be used to generate electricity.

  20. When Mr Fox said that we were doing a position paper i thought it was going to be super hard because Mr Rochowits position paper are supper difficult. It was very interesting learning about hydrofracking and how is negative and the positive. I really never cared about natural gas and how it is produce like that was the last thing on my mind and the way is produced is a way that i never tough it was that ay that natural gas was made.

In the experiment the we took on last week I learn about wastewater treatment what happens different periods that it has to go through during the cleaning process. Like aeration when is done in the plan it’s a secondary treatment air is pumped not mixed back. But when we did it in class the water turn lighter sediments disappeared. Other sediment left behind, remove odors. When it comes to Coagulation flocculation in the plan it pumped to a sedimentation chamber, living organisms is added. When to our experiment the water smelled like plaster the water turn clearer. And things like that happen it didn’t seem to me like so many chemicals were added in the plan or in our experiment.

  22. In this week I am struggling my dissertation on how to pursue it... I need lots of ideas to put a step up. I need to read a lot about ecosystem to get a nice topic.
that is the best topic about ecosystem that I might use as my study??
