(Extra Blog post):
This week the class learned the struggles of what humanity has to go in order to survive. Using knowledge of how much water and resources we needed to survive, we did activities and readings that compared the problems those countries that suffer from poverty and lack of living essentials every day to the lifestyle that our society has. To compare our society to others, our class did an activity to take advantage of the food we are given to us. At first, we received 16 fish in a group of four, and our task was to maintain ourselves alive for the next 5 years, using the resources we had. The rules were simple, each player takes the amount of fish they want (maximum 4), and after each year the number of fish left were doubled (the limit the pool can have is 16), and the task was to live off for 5 years while maintaining profit while leaving at least 1 fish in the pond at the end. To my experience my group did not accomplish this task with the 2 trials that were given to us. The key to this activity was strategy, if we took too much we would take advantage and kill the resource, and if we took too little we would die. This activity was changed my perspective of how much of the Earth’s resources we use, this is of great importance to me because not only are we taking advantage of the Planet’s resources but there are some parts of the world that there are very to no resources at the end. The end result of this activity ended in a disaster, as my team died before the 5 years were up.
Our last interesting information we learned had to do with set of women taking care of the family. This tradition was kept alive for many years, as women were to be the ones who should be taking care of the family, while men just “relaxed” and just used the water as wine. This made me realize how much Latino tradition is similar to that of African tradition, where women are seen as the ones who should feed, take care of the family, and take care of her husband. Adding on, I also took notice that these women take an 8 hour journey trip just for 3 small tanks of water, which weight 50 pounds each. In my opinion these methods to obtain water seems very primitive and sometimes very fatal because 50 pounds behind their backs seems a strain to their health. Health is another concern to these people, not only is water hard to obtain, but it is also a major cause of death, since this water is very muddy not rid of bacteria, many of those who drink this water gets diarrhea, which still die from dehydration of diarrhea. In my opinion it is ironic that these families struggle to get water when in reality it is one the main reasons, according to statistical data, the main reason why 5 year old and younger children die. I also find it very depressing that families who have the money to work and buy medicine got to hospitals that tend not have safe drinkable water themselves.
Although the water in Africa is one of the few countries to be concerned, I am glad that organizations such as WaterAid, who are worried and are raising charities to raise the concern about water and resource shortage and according to their website, are reaching to help over 27 different countries to really need the help. Overall having these organizations makes us want to establish a limit of wasting a certain limit of water, and maybe donating this water to countries in need.

EXTRA
Trout's prefer to live around 50–60 °F, 10–16 °C water temperature and need water with at
least 6 mg/L D.O. The DHEC(Department of Health and Environmental Control) regulates all public water systems and is responsible for ensuring that public water systems are well enough for the state and federal regulations. Fairfield's University has won many championships against other universities and is a very noticeable college in terms of athletic abilities. This week of class was very interesting because of the group activity : The Commons. The Commons is something that is shared between everyone in the world and we used fish as a common. As a group we had to learn how to take just enough that would support our group for each year because if we took too much we wouldn't last for the following years because oft that fact that we're taking too much faster than it can reproduce. This helped me understand the scarcity and importance of not only fish as a commons but water and how much we're wasting and not having enough to replace it.

This week in class we learn how much of the earth water is being distrubited. We saw how African nations lack the technology to transport and carry water. In calls we read a reading on Women travinling everyday to these water holes and carry jerrycans full of water that weighs about 50+ pounds to thier camp sites. This role of women is simlar across the world as the women are the ones who take of the family by cooking, cleaning etc...Compared to the americans we probly use as much water a day as these poor african countries use water every 3 months. We take for granted the amount of water we use and come closer to the day we use up all of our water.

This week the class learned about how not everyone in the world has access to clean fresh water and they often struggle while here in the US we take advantage of it. Like for example in Africa where the woman have to walk for hours to get water thats not even fresh in order to survive and maintain their family. Most of these countries that lack access to water are in poverty and don't have the essentials they need to gain that access. For me I think it also has to do with the government because if a group of people have a strong government they would have the power to gain access to whatever they need. If a country has poor government then their people will often times not have what they need because the government is not strong and not capable of doing so. The tradition in Africa is that the woman have to go and get water while the men stay at home drinking beer. To me this tradition seems unfair because the men have the potential to do so and they are sending woman to do and and also having to leave little kids with other little kids. I also found it interesting on how the United States isn't even the country that has the most water but its the country that uses up the most water so we are consumer more than what we have and thats going to affect us in the long run. Millions of people are dying in these poverty countries while the US is taking advantage of clean fresh water. Americans should take action and use less water a day/week and work more so that there are more associations in countries like Africa to provide fresh water for the people who really need it and are suffering.

1. What do trout eat? How come they like the dark? Can trout be found anywhere in the world? If not, what is their habitat? Is it an estuary like blue crabs or are they unable to live in such an unstable environment? Are many creatures dependent on trout? For example, are they the major food source for certain species? What are the extreme climates to which they cannot survive and thrive in? Or are they able to adapt to whatever environment they are in? Do they travel in school of fish or do they all go off on their own to live in the ocean?
ReplyDelete2. Does any of our water come from the ocean? Where does water get filtered? How does a filter work? How come we can have filters in water bottles? Can all filters be trusted? Do people out chemicals in water in order to clean the water or does it get cleaned through filtering systems? Where does water get filtered? Does our extraction of water affect the environment around the area? For example, are we destroying any rivers by taking water from them?

This week we learned on how we have accessible water while in other places worldwide water is scarce. Water isn't scarce the availability is scarce because most drinkable water used is groundwater which means we need machinery to get it. In the example women like Binayo are used to walking long distances to acquire small portions of water used for cooking and cleaning. I found in the article inequality because it says that men would be sitting drinking beer while most women don't even get a chance to rest. Also the women who do rest are viewed as lazy which surprised me because everyone should have the ability to rest and not be judged for it. They would walk with up to 100 pounds of water on their backs and still manage to do this everyday. I think this brutal 'survival of the fittest' life would be helped to end if the government would actually use money to help make wells and water easily accessible for their people.
