Pioneer Sail Reflection: Due Monday 5/6 @ midnight

This week we traveled aboard the Pioneer sail boat in the NY Harbor. Reflect on your experience in paragraph form using the questions below as a guide.

If you did not attend the trip write a reflection on the progress of your Photovoice Community Action Project.

  • Describe your visit
    • What was it like?  What were the highlights? What did you learn?  What did you find interesting? What will you remember the most from this trip?

  • Explain how this experience compares to the way you learn in the classroom... How is it similar, how is it different?
  • Do you think this trip could have been improved?  If so... how?
  • Did our guides aboard the Pioneer do a good job of teaching you?  What things did they do well?  What could have been better?

  1. My visit to the Pioneer was alright. I didn't really like being on the boat, because we didn't get to eat food on it. We were on the boat for so long that the entire class was starving, which could have lead to us being sea sick on the Pioneer. I don't think no one wanted to see anyone throwing up on the boat. I kept on getting headaches which bothered me but that's what usually happens to me when I'm on a boat, or on the water. I liked how many sites we got to see, we got to see many things like The Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn, lots of other boats, and ships. Some of my highlight's is that we were able to work on the boat. Do some things to help it run, and how we were able to go fishing which led to us catching several fish like the Starfish, Jellyfish, a big Snail. This experience is much more different than the classroom since we are learning on a boat, other than a classroom. We are still learning but the thing is that we are learning in a different environment. In this environment you can actually get sick, while learning which can distract you from actually learning something. I think this trip could have been improved because mostly throughout this entire boat ride we didn't do anything except for a few things all we did was sit down the entire time. I think the only guide that actually did a good job was the woman who spoke to us the entire time. She was the only one who actually interacted with us during the trip, the other guides just did their own thing.

  2. My visit to Pioneer it was okay I didn't like that we was on the boat for 4 hours i was getting dizzy sometime wasn't feeling well beside that the trip was good really learned about the area. We was on the boat for hours going to places and fishing, got to see the statue of liberty, and pass threw Brooklyn. Some of the highlights of the trip was that we help bring up the big flags to sail to boat, we also were fishing which was a fun experience we caught Starfish, Jellyfish, an a Snail. we also got to see places on the map. This experience is different then learning it on class because on boat going to place we get to see how it really is we get to experience it by doing work in class we just see videos and learn facts for me is a big differences the similarity is that in class they tech us stuff just like in the boat trip. What I will remember always from this trip is going fishing getting to see the animals we caught learn facts about them and also get to touch some of them. Yes i feel like this trip could of being improve because mostly all we did was sit down for hours and hear them talk I feel like we should of being more active have us do more stuff. Yes the guide did a good job at teaching us information about the boat, animals and other information on how things work on the boat. The only thing they should of improve was having us be more active instead of having us sitting down just hearing them for most of the time.

  3. My Photovoice Community Action Project is taking momentum as in our progress in completing it. Manuel and I, already finished surveying the people of our community on waste and I was fun. Going around to get a piece of how they feel shedded light on the seriousness on how devoted people are in having their voice heard and it's exactly what my peers and I are doing with this project. After collecting our data we inputted our data into spreadsheets creating our graphs, which looked pretty good. I'm very confident for Wednesday. Before I was a little nervous and afraid I'll make a fool out of myself on Wednesday, presenting my work to sophisticated college students, but I realized I'm taking a one for the team: my community, and hopefully my Photovoice project helps make a difference!

  4. Our visit to pioneer sail was solid. we took the train to the new york harbor and went on a sail to the Bayridge flats where we went fishing with a net. we caught a flounder and a starfish. they also informed us with the sails history. then we tested the water and then went back to shore. it was a good experience especially because i have never gotten on a sail before that day. throwing the net into the water was a fun experience that i would never forget. what i found crazy was that before the sail was used to transport materials. it seems so small and to think that it was up to mother nature to decide how long it would take to get to there destination. learning about history when you actually get to see it it in real life is better than learning in a classroom because it helps you really understand the history more and helps you remember it because of the experience. the trip was good i just wished i would have prepared more for the weather. i feel like our guides taught us well it was just that she was a little bit boring. maybe next time she could talk louder and less. other than that this trip was good and i would like to go sailing again.

  5. Our visit to pioneer was pretty good because we got to see the statue liberty and other boats and the view was perfect. We were fishing and they separate the group so we can sail and catch fish which it was amazing. I experience a lot because I never went on sailing before so it was my first time and I really enjoy it because we were fishing and doing some work and it was epic plus the sun was on point but the wind was really cold but in the most part the trip was fun and very interesting. what i will remember the most is when we were doing the activity and everybody working hard it was hilarious in somehow. The trip was very different from learning in class because when we in the classroom there's no air no view and no space to do nothing but sailing in the boat is different because we got to see a lot of things like we got to see water horse, stars, and some fish which they were big so is different learning in the classroom than outside. But there's a similarity which in the trip we were doing like field work and we do work in the class like that's similarity. The trip would have improve if we went to Ellis island and look the museum. The Guides that were in the boat they did an awesome job and I think I learn a lot about fishing and about the levels of water that the ocean have which the guides showed us in a map like the levels of water where a boat could go or not so I found that very interesting and very creative too like I never knew there were such a map that could tell the levels of water where the boats can go. Every guides did a good job because they explained everything with details and we did work like it was a time to have fun to discover and know the life of different species where they live in

  6. Friday's trip to Pioneer was wonderful. The vision of having a class in a boat was great and unforgettable. I like being on the boat it was pretty neat to see the city in a different Perspective. I love the fact I got to see the Statue of the liberty for the first time even if it was from far. I took many pictures !!! I really enjoy learning about the animals we caught. Like the starfish and how if you cut it in half you gain two new star fish. I found it pretty neat how we caught them with the special kind of net and the Booi Which help us indicate where the net was at. I love the part when we all worked together putting up the sail for the boat to sail away with the winds. It was a perfect day for it too. Although putting up the sails was so heavy we all worked together well as a team and got the job done. Learning about the many reasons why our New York City harbor isn't as clean, such as run off dirty and trash from the land after it rains. Made me think twice on how I treat the land and think about where my trash might end up. My highlight was the point I thought it was pretty cool watching woman do what most people might think is a man's job in working and controlling a ship. In the end I enjoy watching one of the woman educator be the capital and drive us back to dock. I will love to come back again with more WHEELS student and family members to experience the ride of joy again and to show them what I learned at sea.

  7. My photo voice community project is coming out very good. The team work me and my teammates mates got going on in amazing. We had been trying really hard to stay up to date with the due dates to have everything ready. I love the fact that we got the community’s opinion on our project. This has been my favorite part so far in my project. Interviewing people was really fun because they were interested in providing me with their opinion. As a student that’s working in hopefully making a change I need to provide data and back up my argument and there is no better evidence then the people’s voice. Me and the rest of the team is really looking forward to presenting because we are going to be talking to people that have more power than us. Also those people we are going to be talking to have made changes in our community before. I find it very cool and interesting that my team and I are behind a change that could possibly happen. Even before I started with this project I always believed that we had lack of nice trees in our community and I am glad I could express my opinion to other people who care.

  9. The pioneer trip was the most exciting experience yet. I learned skills and techniques that I will carry throughout my life and use for my future career. It was interesting to know that without boats we are bot able to access or most precious products like iPhones etc. Learning that out water was an estuary as well was helpful because we were able to identify the kind of marine animals living in brackish water. We have learned many of these facts and reviewed what it means and what affect does it have to the habitat. Testing the Dissolve Oxygen of the water was a strategy that we have been doing throughout class. It’s important to test the quality in our water because it determines whether or not the water is safe. It was a great feeling to know questions that the pioneer volunteers and guides were asking.

If I were to do this trip again, I would be a volunteer because it’ll be great to get involve in teaching others about the history of pioneering and how it was introduce to New York. The Pioneer guides did a great job instructing us. They are really intelligent and knew how to well manage the pioneer boat. It felt amazing lifting the peak and the throat of the boat. It was exhausting and a challenge but fun. The way everything was explained was very clear and helpful to everyone. Learning the way boats read direction from a map was also very interesting. Understanding the map is a little challenging but it’s very exciting to try to read. Everything was perfect; I felt like we learned more than enough and will benefit from the knowledge gained.

  10. I really enjoyed the trip on the Pioneer. I found it interesting how a couple of decades ago it was used for cargo transportation. Not only were the instructors like assistants in a classroom but when we learned about the history behind the vessel and then the area of water around it and on the animals we found. It also felt like a class because we were able to reference information we already knew. Not only was it educational what made this a great learning experience but the views and activities. Being able to see the Statue of Liberty, Governor’s Island, and the new twin towers was also beneficial. The environment that surrounded us was beneficial to the learning experience because it helped produce a calm and educational scenario. Something I will really remember is that the Pioneer was a cargo vessel which helps show the evolution of technology. Even though while the Pioneer wasn’t used in NY while it was transportation boat it arrived to help tell educate on how we have progressed. Its also good to know the little things of our past even though the Pioneer isn’t a significant key of our past it still helps educate the future generations on past generations.

  11. My visit to the Pioneer was actually pretty awesome. It was fun engaging in many different activities like help run the ship like putting up the sheets. Although it gave me temporary blisters it was still alright I did my day worth of exercise. Hopefully we can do it again before the school year ends. Overall everything in the Pioneer was a highlight because its amazing how old the Pioneer is, but overall the amount of time we lasted on it. Not only did we learned but we also learned how the Pioneer was 128 year old as a boat. Its amazing how old the ship was and was still running like new. I think overall the most memorable thing I will know is everything but especially the "2-16- hieve". Overall it was the most funniest chant ever. This experience is completely different to school because it's something new being tried out especially since we are at sea learning but also having fun. The only thing that could've changed would be eating food on the boat because lots of people like my self was getting head aces time to time especially after lasting 3 hours out at sea. Other wise there is nothing to be changed. And the tour guides did a good job giving us a solid over view of the boat's history and what there is to learn about. Overall hopefully we are allowed to take another trip like this.

  12. I didn't attend to the trip. My photo voice project has been a new experience for me that makes me reflect on how better my community could be if these little problems are fixed. My project made me notice how making little changes would change the way we live in New York and how healthier our lives could be if we decide to make little changes regarding trash. I also learned about the new parking regulation. The new parking regulation has its ups and downs in my opinion. It is beneficial to car owners because it helps keep your car parked in the same place for longer and its less of a hazel to own a car and look for parking. But in other points of view our city streets are going to be dirtier because the garbage truck is going to go by ones a week having more garbage pilled up in the streets.

  13. Last week, we went on an exciting trip to the Pioneer sail in down town Manhattan. We had the opportunity of helping sail the boat with the volunteer group of sailors of the Pioneers. We learned a bit of history about the Pioneer like how it wasn't originally from New York and how it was a working hauler ship that helped other ships in Boston. Then the volunteer Sailors told us some information on our surroundings in the city like where the boroughs were, the different water sectors etc. How we learn things in the classroom is less interesting than how we learn things outside. I was more active and more interested in what I was learning about because I was able to do many of the activities myself. The volunteers did a great job in explaining to us the jobs that have to be done in the Pioneer, the history of the boat, and the boats importance now in New York City.
