Think back about your entire year in Environmental Science.
What did you learn this year? What are you taking with you? What will you remember about this class 5, 10, or even more years from now.
What suggestions do you have for students that will take this class next year in order for them to be successful?
How could this course been improved? What could/should be done differently in the future?
Which topic/project did you find to be the most interesting?
Thanks for a great year.

This year I learned a lot in science. I can say this have been the most outgoing science class I have ever taken by far. I learned where our tap water comes from and how safe it is. I also learned a lot about Trout and what they do to our water etc.. These are some things I will never forget andI will look back one day to teach others, like I am already to my younger cousins. For students taking this class next year just enjoy it and make the best out of everything. This class is fun and creative and Mr.Fox is foxy cool yet also a great teacher because he shows you step by step everything you need to know. This class should not change a thing. I think it worked out well just the way it was planed it should stay the same for years to come. My all time favorite thing about this year was learning about our drinking water in NYC because every one including my self thinks wrong about it. After learning about our Tap water and bottle water I see both in a different way.

This year I learned enough about the environment for me to be able to make a change to it. The environment is totally under my control and is easily manipulated, which is why its my responsibility as an inhabitant of earth to protect it and this class really helped me learn how to do that. After this course, I have adopted many new tactics of “green living” in a sense that I have learned new ways to protect the earth and as I grow older I will keep the earth in mind as I make decisions that heavily impact my life, like what kind of stove I buy or what kind of car I drive. I would make sure the students of next year realize that this class is very fun but in order for it to be fun the students need to meet Mr. Fox’s standards in order for there to be progress in their position as an environmental science student. I feel like this course was very well planned and taught, so I don’t think there is any other way I would have had it taught to me. I really like the projects that we did as a class that required presentations at the end of them because public speaking isn’t something I did much of in my other classes and doing it in this class was very fun because there were procedures that we followed that guarantee our success. This was a great class and I’m glad I was given this opportunity, and if I can take it again, I definitely would.
ReplyDeleteEnvironmental science was my overall favorite class this year. It was my favorite for a little of reasons. The trips was one of them but what made this class so special was the amount of hand on activities we did. Every project or research we actually had materials to work with. something that this class taught me was that i could actually make a change The work with the columbia grad students showed me that i was capable of doing something if i really want it Also this class prepared me more regarding due dates , Mr fox was very firm with his due dates so it prepared me to be in top of my game. It help me manage my time. I Would recommend all the students that are going to take this class to give it their best, in all the projects and class work because the class is not easy . What i found the most interesting was the hydrofracking unit. The debates and the opinions on it was very interesting. the documentary helped me build a opinion of my own as well as other sources.
ReplyDeleteWhat I learned this year, was a lot of things. What I am taking with me this year of many things like how to build a tree guard, how to help out in our environment. or whenever I am going to get on a boat or something like that I would know how to catch them and stuff like that. What I would remember years from now especially is the teacher that taught me everything in this class is Mr. Fox. Without him teaching us all of these things we wouldn't have learned anything, to be able to use these things to be able to use in our future. I would come back years from now to be able to thank him for everything that he has done for us.
ReplyDeleteFor students next year that would like to be successful for this class next year, I would tell them that make sure they try hard in this to be able to end up getting a grade that you would like to end up having in the end. For tests/quizzes make sure you study because if you don't then once you see that quiz you are going to wish that you did in the start. Just focus on you work, make sure education comes first so that you can end up having a better future.
This course doesn't have to be improved in anyway. Mr. Fox did well doing everything to be able to teach us. All the trips he had taken us on, was great so that we could have a better experience of what we are learning in class. Not all the things that you learn in class, isn't going to help the use of everything else outside of school would come to a lot of more help than the usual.
The topic that I found the most interesting was when we went to NYU in downtown to present our group projects, the Social Justice Expo. Learning from other groups and what they chose a their topic, was interesting. It shows what they are really into, what they would like to see be fixed in their community. Also, what was great about this project was that while presenting we were able to meet new people made new friends, some of us stayed in contact with these people. We went there nervous to present our projects, in front of strangers, but once we left we left proud of everything that we had done in our projects. Leaving like it was it was nothing in the first place, and with new friends.

This year i enjoyed The environmental science class. I learned about different problems that occur in the world and one of those problems were sewer pipes in NYC. I learned that after it rains hard some pipes are limited to how much water it can hold and the amount of water that is getting cleaned up. 5 to 10 years from know i would remember that bottled water is tap water but cleaned more than a normal filter does. I would also remember that leaving a bottle of water in a car for a long time is dangerous if you drink it eventually due to the bottle leaking chemicals from the plastic chemicals the bottle was made out of. Some suggestions i would give to students is to go into the class open minded and interested because its going to be a fun and interesting class. This course needs no changes because it has a learning environment and fun activities are done also. The most interesting topic i found was the social justice project because we had the opportunity to spread the word on the environment in Washington heights.

4th period environmental science class
This year in Environmental Science I've had a great experience learning new things about my surroundings on Earth.Five to ten years from now I will always remember learning about pollution and how it affects the lives of millions of people across the globe daily. Also how its going to be a continuous problem in years to come unless some sort of change or adaptation occurs that would prevent so much pollution. I, in at least a small way want to be part of the change. For students coming in next year into this class I would suggest to them staying active and participating in all class activities and discussions because that's the best way to learn the science in this class. The most interesting topic for me was learning about the issues going on in my community that I didn't even realize. I enjoyed presenting with my classmates the problems going on in my community to other people and students from other parts of the city and other boroughs. This year was an exciting, fun year with my class and Mr. Fox,I want to thank everyone for this great year!!!!!

Overall i have learned so much through out this yea in this class. I only wish i can have this class again next year because of some many things that made this class fun. The hands on experience the presentations and the learning experience was amazing. It made my day knowing I had this class because it not like others classes, it helps you think and develop your thinking. The class over all was one my my best that I knew I was going to enjoy it especially learning so many things about the environment and the world its self. I will remember me this class til i grow old, it was one of my best classes since about 2 years. Its a experience I will never forget. In my opinion all the students have to do is just pay attention and do all the work because later in the year the work shows off and how well you can do the class. Nothing in this course should be changed, I think that the teaching methods and the way you have things planned out works well with people and maybe the next tree guards should be built earlier if you end up doing it again. The best projects was talking about environmental issues like construction, trees and waste and going to the expose in NYU but also building the tree guards. I just want to say thank you for being my teacher one of the best in about 2 years and hope we definetly will stay in touch and sooner or later I will be asking you fox for help in the college proccees writing recommandations and for help in job applications.. . . have a wonderful summer hope we stay in touch and continue seeing each other :)
ReplyDeleteThank you !!!
Throughout this class year I learned many thing relating to our environment, breaking it down from water, to land, to finally the air, I'll sure I'll remember the things we learned because it was all things worth knowing. Ways how I contribute either negatively or positively to the environment will stay with me forever, like the amount of water I use, ways how I can conserve and be sustainable.
ReplyDeleteFor the future students that will take this class the following school year I suggest that they pay attention a lot in class because the simplest thing that we learned were the hardest thing for me to recall. They should also study and keep the handouts given to them for future reference.
Honestly this class couldn't have been better. We had a small group and worked very efficiently and learned from one another also having fun along the way. One of my favorite classes so far throughout my whole high school year.
I found that the Hydrofracking topic was very interesting because it gave us a chance in the class as individuals to decide on our opinion on it as experts on the topic.
This Year I have Learned a lot throughout this year and I feel proud of myself because I did a lot of things this year that it was incredible. For example Me and my peers we work really hard this year that we never going to forget what we did because of the funny moment that we had together including Mr. Fox which he helped me a lot throughout the year. We went to a lot of trips which we enjoyed, for example we went to Catskill Mountain and it was extremely good everybody had great time like families. Another trip that we went to was when we went to present our expo project and it was really nice seen a lot of people with there project and us of course with our laptop. One suggestion we have to the student that are going to take this class next year is that This Class is awesome and is very helpful in the future because this class teach us how we need to contribute to the society. This class is Great and interesting because you can learned things that you don't even know. One thing that should be improve is that Mr. Fox should take the student that are taking this course for the first time camping which that would be fun. The project that I founded interesting was the expo project because we were in front of people that we didn't know and we were presenting our hard work to them and a note a side we won awards which I was proud of my Class.
ReplyDeleteMr Fox Thanks for this incredible year and Thanks for all your Help a really learned a lot throughout this year. Have a Great summer !!

What I'll mostly take away from this year is what I learned about natural gas, tap water and waste water, since it seemed to be what we mostly focused our time on in class. I'll remember that NYC's tap water is exceptionally clean and at times, cleaner than bottled water. I'll remember about natural gas and how it's extracted from shale and the benefits and risks of hydrofracking. I'll also remember about the waste water cleaning process and the dangers of combined sewer overflows (I'll remember not to shower during a rainstorm).
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion to students taking this class would be to simply listen to all the lessons and do all your work; don't be lazy. Mr. Fox is a very fair teacher and gives out a fair amount of work. Do your work, listen and class and take notes and you will excel and be rewarded later on with a plethora of field trips.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I would increase the workload. Just a little bit. A couple more quizzes (some unannounced) and more assignments. Just to keep the students on their toes and remind them that they do have to work in this class (sometimes it felt like you didn't).
I found the hydrofracking project most interesting. I knew that in the project, many people would probably choose to go against hydrofracking and create presentations highlighting the risks of hydrofracking. I like to challenge myself and go against the popular opinion and I also gave myself a bit more of a challenge by writing the position piece instead of creating a visual presentation. It was very rewarding in the end and is a piece of work I am very proud of.
I had a very rough year and I despised most of the classes, but Environmental Science consistently offered the most interesting and engaging lessons and was a great learning experience.
Well this was a great year where we learned to have fun and productively learn at the same time. Everything we learned was put in a way that we would be interested. From The Lorax when learning about sustainability to getting a guest speaker to talk to us about hydro-fracking. I think that's something I will remember from years to come that being productive can come from many distinct methods. I think the only thing students need to do is do all their work. The most controversial topic was hydro-fracking because we were confused in what was really good for our environment and economy. But all topics had their fun twist which is why this class was different from the rest.

The project that I will remember from class is the hydro franking project because it shows what the government has to do to fill the need of the people .For the students of next year is to not let the work stack up and to talk with the teacher. With this class it makes me think more about what I do in the world around me and the effects about the things that I do in the future. The project that I find most interesting was the photo voice project because it show what people care most about their city but they all have a connection to improve the way the city looks
ReplyDeleteI really learned a lot of cool fact but one thing that i remember is brackish water witch was a mixed of salt and normal water. To be honest i wont remember a lot but one thing that i will remember is the all the fun that i had with my classmate doing the experiment and the project. One thing i will tell to the other student for next year is to respect mr.fox and to have fun doing the work. I think that nothing should be improve because in almost all the work that we did was in group work and that was really helpful for me. I topic that i found most interesting was the photovoice because we got to go to and expedition witch everybody got to see what we learned. if their was a class that will take again it will be this one.

Environmental Science was the best science class I have ever taken my whole life. I am proud to say that I enjoy every single topic discussed in this course. At the beginning of the school year we were all asked what it is and what is like to be sustainable. I didn’t even know what that word meant in my life and if I was a sustainable. But because I was not only taught what the word meant I was also showed how things had to be done and what was the right thing to do in order to maintain a sustainable life. I learn that purchasing bottled water is not as great a society wanted us to think. Leaning that NYC tap water was the cleanest water was amazing and a little difficult for me to digest because who would’ve thought that water coming out of faucet was safe. I’m definitely taking this information with me till death and carry it throughout my family tradition. Another project that really changed the way I saw my surrounding was the photovoice project along with the social justice expo at NYU. It definitely improved my presentation skills and how well informed I was the issue on waste. For the first time in a long time I didn’t feel nervous during my presentation and felt really intelligent. I loved the feeling and environment, it was an amazing experience.
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t ask for a better year in this class. After learning what I have learned, I have captured every important information that I know will be useful to me. This years science class has showed me that education really has the power to change your life and the way you view the world. I would’ve never realize the issues surrounding my community if I wasn’t taught about them. I didn’t even know about the community board for each district. It’s become important because now I know where to complain about the disorder of my community. It’s become obvious that the only reason many areas don’t change nor improve is because many people are not educated on the issue. If you’re not educated you have no power or voice. People who do have the knowledge tempt to manipulate those who are uneducated and that’s why we should always try to obtain as much information as possible.
My advice to those who will enter the environmental science class is to DO ALL YOUR WORK! that’s it. It’s an interesting class and there’s no way anybody should be failing the class. Everybody has the potential to do great in this class. There is no excuse. If you’re focus and listen in class your grade will be better than a passing grade. In fact a passing grade for this class isn’t acceptable because it’s not difficult at all. It just requires a determination and dedication.
